Is UFC Counter-Programming Helping Affliction?

In this NBC Sports video Andrew Falzon from MMA Payout looks at this weekend’s UFC vs. Affliction battle by breaking down the Affliction card and its chances for success against the free Silva vs. Irvin event. Aside from him referring to Tim Sylvia as “Emelianenko’s first real challenge” (um, Nogueira? who beat Sylvia recently? ringing any bells?) he does a great job as an on-camera commentator.

But all this media attention on Affliction and their struggle against the UFC’s counter-programming efforts only makes me wonder if it’s not really helping Affliction get the word out about their event. If the thinking behind putting a free event on Spike TV the very same night is that it will keep casual fans from paying for Affliction, it seems like the UFC also risks drawing attention to the Affliction event as media outlets inevitably run stories on the raison d’être of this UFC show.

That’s not to say those same fans who learn of Affliction by hearing about the UFC’s anti-Affliction show will all shell out the pay-per-view bucks, but it does help put Affliction on the map. Maybe the better tact would be to kill them with silence, though that’s never been Dana White’s way. Especially when it comes to t-shirt guy.

Noe Romero hit it right on the chin. Exactly correct. Dana White reminds me of the Old Soviet Union, brutish, arrogant, filled with false pride, thinking that it is all about him. His egomania is monumental. he treats his fighters like dirt, ranks them for title fights depending on his personal feelings towards them and crushes any and all attempts for other MMA organizations and often even the UFC attempts to get more mainstream exposure.
The fact that so many bloggers support this jerk as do so many of the blogger readers only gives proof to the fact that the average American MMA 'fan' has zero clue.
I am hoping Affliction and any other organization that decides to take Komissar White on succeeds.
As Romero says, it will be better, MUCH better for us fans and better for the fighters.
Dana White you are an ignorant blowhard. its NOT about you.

When Affliction does do bad it will mainly be a combination of two things.

1. The main event is a fight featuring a-guy-nobody-likes versus a-guy-nobody-knows.

2. The UFCs counter-programming.

Affliction will not do well Saturday.

I live in New York I have not seen a single Affliction poster anywhere in the city.

The Lindland-Fedor Bodog Fight event on the other hand was plastered everywhere.

If this show does poorly it's Affliction's poor advertising to blame.

Dana is a fucking dick head... but we should we thankful for the fact that the UFC converted MMA into an great sport...Unfortunately a cunt like him self is cought up too much into his own, that does not give credit to all those "Internet pussies" that helped the UFC grow. If it wasn't for the viewers the UFC would not be what it is now.

you shit heads should see that if this wasn't Affliction, Mr. Dick Head (AKA DANA) wouldn't have given a fucking good fight away for free, as he is doing with the Silva vs. Irvin event. Which by the way... that also shows how much of a fucking prick he is, sinking his own boat to rival Affliction, sounds to me that he feels as if a 12" cock was being pushed up his ass. Are u scared Mr. Dick head? so much for "ambassador for the sport"

As I previously mentioned, thank you UFC (and their fighters) for helping convert the MMA into a well accepted sport.

I'm just glad that there is more competition jumping in, even if "they make fucking shirts for a fucking living"... after all, More Competition = More Options for us the fans (remember we make you what you are now).

oh by the fucking way Bitch Ass Dana, My name is Noe Romero, you Piece of Shit Ass Hole.

No- I think Dana's evil pan will definitely work. I am going to watch the free spike tv event and will catch the Banned event online. I'm more excited to see Silva at Heavies than the pay per view fights.

Countdown to Affliction: “Banned” (video)
July 16, 2008 By: Adam Morgan Category: Affliction: Banned, Fedor Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia
Affliction has a YouTube station set up and they just posted a half-hour countdown to the fights this weekend in three separate parts, specifically focusing on Tim Sylvia vs. Fedor Emelianenko. Part 1 is below and the other two are after the jump. Enjoy!

Nothing like heavyweights going at it, celebrating each other's virility.

Interesting problem for UFC. I've got to say, I hadn't heard of the Affliction fight yet, but now I'm conflicted. Maybe we'll watch the PPV, and record UFC.
