(Coulda been worse, I guess…)
Just two months after bouncing out of the UFC following his third-straight loss at UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko, notoriously cursed striker James Irvin began his climb back to the big leagues at a Rebel Fights event in Roseville, California, on Saturday. As you’ll see in the video after the jump, it must have been a humbling experience from the get-go. Instead of a deafening, appropriately lit arena, Irvin squared off with a dude named Angel DeAnda for the entertainment of a couple hundred folks in a cinder-blocked space that was as small as it was bright.
It would have been especially depressing if Irvin lost — and he was a ball-hair away of doing just that. DeAnda starts the fight bombing out on Irvin with left hooks, but is floored by a patented Sandman Superman Punch. DeAnda pops back up, quickly scores a knockdown of his own, and starts pouring on the pain from the top. Check the vid’s 1:35 mark to see just how close Josh Rosenthal was to stopping the fight; he basically changes his mind at the last possible moment, which allows Irvin to get his bearings, work his way up, and put the stamp on DeAnda.
In all fairness, Irvin vs. DeAnda was a ridiculous back-and-forth slugfest that would have won Fight of the Night honors had it taken place at a UFC event. Instead, it occurred in near-obscurity, and served as a reality check that James Irvin needs a lot more tuning-up before he’s ready for the UFC again. And now, the video…

commentsMan fuck a stool!
On a side note, after fighting at 205 and 185 in the UFC, Irvin is a HW now?
Nevermind. I see he fought at HW in the WEC.
On a side note, the WEC had a HW division?
Funny!
@2DaDeath
Worked well enough to earn the belt, defend it four times, and help launch MMA into the consciousness of America. I hear he's made a fuckton of money in the process as well.
You mean the ones that gave Anderson Silva his black belt in BJJ?
One thing's for sure... That was a good scrap! Haven't seen a UFC main event like that in a long time.
I've always gotten the impression that Irvin is a decent guy. He didnt try to follow him to the ground and beat him some more when he knew he had landed a knockout blow. He just walked away and let the ref do his job. It doesnt surprise me he would show concern for a still downed opponent after the fight. The guy was clearly still out cold even though he was trying to stand up. The lights were on but nobody was home.
As far as the interactions with the guy's fans and family we'll have to see if some upcoming video will show us what really happened.
After that performance, I do hope strikeforce picks him up. He deserves it.
Oh and hose406, please find that video. That sounds like some funny, fill up my boring work day with laughter, shit.
By the way, kid, I hate Sherdog.
pics/video?
You could see Irwin was pretty professional afterwards, but some of Angel's guys were clearly talking crap to him while the medics tried to get Angel onto the stool.
"held at taser point" is also the phrase of the day.
Also, good job Josh Rosenthal.
It was my guess that the various Athletic Commissions paid the refs. If that's the case, I would work every fight I could get my hands on.
Props to him though for surviving that knockdown to get up and knock Irvin down. Props to Irvin for surviving his knockdown and coming back to STARCH that poor bastard.
That was a world-class swing.
