James ‘The Self-Proclaimed Icon’ Toney Says the Klitschkos, Ray Mercer and MMA Fighters Ain’t Got Nothin’ on Him

(Video courtesy YouTube/UppercutMagazine)

IBA heavyweight champion and soon-to-be UFC fighter James Toney did an interview with Uppercut Magazine recently and he had a lot to say about a variety of topics including his upcoming fight with Randy Couture, the Klitschko brothers and the fact that he’s an icon.

A couple interesting points were touched on in the interview.

One, he hasn’t yet signed his contract to face Randy yet. He intimated that he was having "his people" look at the document before he agreed to the terms. Maybe he wants to throw in a Dan Quinn, no takedowns or kicks type of stipulation to the fight. We’ll see what happens.

The second was that Chuck wanted to scrap him at UFC 108. I picture Chuck standing beside Dana when Toney bum rushed him to demand the UFC president sign him to his organization and the Iceman goes into hypnotized killer mode.

"You want me to take care of him, boss?"

"Not yet. Let’s hear him out, first, Chuck."

Anyway, I’ve taken the painstaking time to transcribe the interview for those of you who, like me, don’t speak "punch drunk."

Full transcription after the jump.
———-

For those of you who thought I was goin’, I ain’t goin’ nowhere. The bottom line is, you all think he should go box professionally and claiming that the Klitschkos are the best thing since sliced cheese. They’re absolutely wrong. These guys are garbage. Vitalia and Vladimitchka, you talkin’ about fighting David Haye and you all scared to fight me because you all know I’m gonna ruin your whole life. I deeply do not like you guys, period. You guys are bad for the sport. I promise you, after I take care of my business August 28 and run through Couture…make sure you buy it, I know you will…I guarantee you will like everybody else will, you all will buy this fight…After I get don knocking him out, I’m coming for you bitches next.

He signed the contract. I’m gonna probably get everything done on my side…we gonna get it done cuz’ we ain’t no dummies. I ain’t new to the game. I’m a professional. We about ready to go and do it. I’m gonna do it. Like I said, I wouldn’t be doin’ this if it wasn’t for Dana White opening up his mouth and sayin’ that MMA fighters are better than boxers – which is bullshit, know what I’m sayin’? Anybody that knows anything knows that we been around a lot longer than MMA has, know what I’m sayin’? Its record is proof. It was time to put up or shut up and put his money where his mouth is and he did that. Don’t get me wrong, I have no animosity toward Dana white. Dana White is a hell of a dude – a great dude, hell of a president – but the fighters in the UFC are getting kind of cocky. They’re getting above themselves and I’m gonna bring ‘em back down to earth.

[Randy] is legendary in THEIR sport – kickboxing, karate, whatever. I’m a legend period. I’m an ICON. He’s not on my level. I told Dana White that the only way I’d do this if I fight your best. I wanted Brock Lesnar first, but I wasn’t aware that he was hurt. I hope he gets well. Then, I was talking about Randy Couture to Dana White [at UFC 108], and Chuck Liddell was sitting next to him. Chuck Liddell looked uneasy and unhappy. I told Chuck, ‘I ain’t gonna fight you here; I’m gonna get paid for it. I wanna fight you in the ring.’ The next thing you know I’m hearing everybody say that Couture called me out. He’s a big man and I respect him. So now he’s gonna step up and he’s gonna get done. Don’t get me wrong, Randy Couture is a great fighter for this sport. But he comes in and he gonna do this to James Toney? Come on, man. I’ve been in the ring with the best fighters in the world, period. I’m the best fighter you’ve ever seen in your life. I’m telling you right now. Randy, look into my eyes. You know there is no fear here. You come in with that wrestling, dirty boxing, I promise you, I’m gonna choke your ass out.

For MMA fans who don’t know James Toney, all you got to do is Google me. Google me all over the world, you’ll see me. Everybody seen what I’ve done. I’ve done some of the nastiest things to some of the greatest fighters in the world. I am THE icon. The greatest fighter to ever put gloves on. I am the true ultimate fighter. So, to all you MMA fans out there and to the ones who are mad that I’m in there, fuck you all. My credentials speak for themselves, know what I’m sayin’? Dana White knows what I can do. That’s why he signed me. He knows I’m gonna put asses in the seats. I ain’t no fool. MMA fans who ain’t never seen James Toney and want to know what to expect, they gonna expect somebody who fights. You don’t come to the UFC to see somebody hold and hug and squeeze each other all night. I come for blows. I come to hurt somebody.

Look. I respect Ray Mercer. Ray Mercer’s a good dude and he’s a friend of mine. Respect. But I’m not no Ray Mercer, I’m James Toney and I’m in a class all by myself. Like I said, all I’m gonna tell you is tune into UFC August 28. James Toney’s the real. Look. I ain’t never did it before. I’m comin’ to your field. I’m comin’ to the MMA field because you all are too fuckin’ scared to come to my field. You know what I’m sayin’? So I’m gonna let you go. I’m gonna show how good of an athlete I am. I’m a great athlete and I’m gonna show you August 28. I’m gonna destroy one of your “so-called” legendary fighters. Randy Couture…respect once and for all. He been a gentleman. He ain’t talked smack about me, so I ain’t gonna talk about him, cuz’ he ain’t talk about me, but on August 28, we’ll see.

I didnt understand him when he was explaining the pythagorean theorem, everything else I can understand clear as day

fatbellyfrank- June 4, 2010 at 7:56 am

@ C Bus, I think its his total lack of respect for MMA in general that gives me the shits, and as for boxing legend, we’re gonna have to change his name to Two-Dicks Toney, cause you cant get that stupid just pulling one

C-Bus Allstar- June 4, 2010 at 4:59 am

@SofaKingNyce

I think the lack of respect for this “boxing legend” stems from the complete and utter lack of respect on Toney’s part for the ground game, the clinch game, and the submissions game. Toney knows how to box, he doesn’t know how to fight. Boxing and fighting are two completely different engagements. Boxing is merely one minor aspect to fighting. MMA is closer to real fighting than Boxing could ever hope to be. Don’t get me wrong, Toney is a great boxer, but when he fights Couture, he’s going to be on his back more than a $2 hooker from Brooklyn.

BrandonTheTruth- June 4, 2010 at 12:22 am

I see his mouth moving… and sound is coming out. I just can’t understand what the fuck he’s trying to say.

so let me get this straight he’s Kimbo with a legitimate Boxing background! Why cant the UFC learn from its mistakes !DAMN YOU DANA WHITE!

Keyser Soze- June 3, 2010 at 5:40 pm

So… let me get this straight. Toney TKO’s a washed up Holyfield, earns a majority draw and no contest versus Hasim Rahman, two decision losses to Sam Peters, a no contest versus John Ruiz, sprinkled with wins over Matt Greer, Dominick Guinn, Fres Oquendo and Danny Batchelder.

Wow… as a heavyweight, that’s pretty damn…. unimpressive. And he thinks he’s an icon?

Toney may have better hands, but Randy’s a smart fighter. If Toney hasn’t practiced his takedown defense and relied solely on his boxing, he deserves to lose… badly.

I agree with the poster who commented there are few mixed martial artists that trash talk boxing (in general). Boxing purists will never accept anything less than boxing being the best.

Generally, I do believe mma fans would be more receptive to a good boxing match than boxing fans would sit down and enjoy mixed martial arts though.

I was a longtime fan of boxing, and it’s not that I think boxing is past it’s prime, but I’ve simply preferred mixed martial arts for a long time now. What turned me off from boxing is the corruption and it’s difficulty to take seriously when you have three (or four) belts in the same weight class and multiple champions.

Given the choice between DW or Don King, at least you’ll get the truth from DW. And you won’t get your pocket picked.

Toney will lose in the first round, and this will be a dead issue two days later.

“I ain’t afraid of no front kicks, side kicks or nuttin.. I know all the side check kicks there are to know, and since I’m James Toney, Imma prove it to yall mothaf*ckas! People keep tellin me I’m punch drunk, but I swear I’m not! I’m just drunk, like every other day.”

fatbellyfrank- June 3, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Please, Please For the love of MMA, Randy, destroy this self delusional imbecile

Angry Whopper- June 3, 2010 at 3:46 pm

I want to hear James Toney and Ozzy Osbourne have a conversation.

macreadysshack- June 3, 2010 at 1:31 pm

OMG OMG OMG I wouldn’t want to be Randy Couture right now!

I mean, all those failed marriages?

Lysol- June 3, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Hypothetically speaking, how funny would it be if Toney had secretly been practicing jiu jitsu for a while and ac….yeah I couldn’t even finish typing that horse shit.

El Guapo- June 3, 2010 at 1:07 pm

(Mumbling, slurring)”I ain’t neva heard no Grecko Roman, Roman Grecko, Richard Grieco Night at the Roxbury. I ain’t scared no wrasslin, either, nawmsayin? I don’t believe in no kickbox, karate chop, chopstick, neither.”

El Guapo- June 3, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Would be cool to see Lights Out and The Natural stand and bang, but I doubt it goes down like that. Randy’s got pride, yes, but he’s no dummy. Why the hell would he stand with a guy who’s ground game is Bob Sapp-esque??

I say Mumbles throws(count ‘em)ONE punch before he gets taken down. ONE

Elentius- June 3, 2010 at 12:33 pm

@ Sofa

MMA is Boxing evolved. To fight in a more difficult sport after you retire from a lesser one is insulting and that is why I do not respect the “boxing legends”. They think it is a hobby and second rate so we need real MMA fighters, not 300 plus pound former champions, to teach them a lesson.

That would be similar to me joining the Special Forces in the Marines for fun after I retire as an Army Officer… yes that’s extreme, but I hope you get my point.

X- June 3, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Classic example of boxing is Mayweather…he can fight for 11 million in a night…and talk shit…cuz no one is going to give him 11 million to fight in the UFC. boxing is big money…it’s a joke on the MMA scale of money that rashad got paid so much for his cheap style of fighting.

peckawoodd- June 3, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Tony’s developed his own dialect and I think he’s getting a lack of credit for doing so. On another note, I wonder if Randy will try and trade with him? What do y’all think?

Mr_Misanthropy- June 3, 2010 at 12:22 pm

Hey man- cut Randy some slack. Alzheimer’s does some terrible things to the human brain, and while it can be amusing to watch, it’s not OK to make funzies. Capice?

Goog- June 3, 2010 at 11:55 am

Holy shit. Randy’s gonna be duped into thinking he’s in there alone… shadowboxing. But then the bell will ring and when his shadow goes back to it’s own corner, he’ll switch to southpaw just to be safe till he figures out what the hell’s really going on. But then he’ll hear his shadow talk and wonder why Chuck Liddell was dipped in tar for their 4th fight.

El Guapo- June 3, 2010 at 11:33 am

Toney looks slimmer. You can actually start to see a semblance of a neck, which wasn’t the case a month ago. And since he’s apparently learned how to apply a choke, I’m officially crowning him… THE SECOND MOST DANGEROUS MAN IN THE WORLD!! Nawmsayin

Naaaa, scratch that. He’s still Mumbles.

Mr_Misanthropy- June 3, 2010 at 11:30 am

Prove me wrong and I’ll change my song.

Mr_Misanthropy- June 3, 2010 at 11:29 am

James toney is through- like mildew and bar-b-ques.

ihateemo- June 3, 2010 at 11:24 am

Unlike most people here, I can’t get enough of listening to James “Punched Out” Toney. It’s like listening Chael Sonnen’s mentally disabled, adoptive brother.

If Couture is smart, he’ll shoot for the double and put Toney on his back straight away. It’s be like watching a cross between Bambi and a plate of Jello after the Natural is done repeatedly punching him in the noggin.

Joedirt- June 3, 2010 at 10:29 am

GUI-uh-teen… I was a boxing fan before mma as well. I’ve been watching the UFC since the very first one too… and I was pissed at the boxing representation then! Not that I think a top boxer would clean up… but there has NEVER been a top boxer cross train and compete in MMA. Top wrestlers learn to punch and fight in MMA, but no top boxer has trained for takedowns and changed over. Obviously because of money. I get excited at the idea of a champion boxer PROPERLY crosstraining and competing but damn… a washed up Toney is NOT it.
