Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Jardine to Fight Mousasi. No, it’s not April First Anymore.

While we were busy thinking of Strikeforce related April Fool’s Day pranks, it turns out that Strikeforce was busy finding a replacement for Mike Kyle.  Due to the timing of the announcement, I’ve been skeptical to report it as real news.  However, it appears that Keith Jardine will be stepping in for Mike Kyle on April 9th to fight Gegard Mousasi.

Go figure.

Since being released by Zuffa, Jardine has gone 2-1, winning his last two fights after losing to Trevor Prangley at Shark Fights 13.  Jardine last fought on March 4th at Double Threat, where he picked up a TKO victory over Aron Lofton.  Hats off to Jardine for stepping in on such short notice after fighting a little less than one month ago.

Still, this one looks like it’ll get ugly quickly.  No one is denying that a good wrestler can give Mousasi problems.  There’s always a chance that Jardine can outwrestle Mousasi, avoid getting submitted and grind out a victory.  Just like there’s always a chance that you can become a millionaire off of a scratch off lottery ticket.

The Main Card for Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley now looks like this:

Welterweight Championship bout: Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley
Lightweight Championship bout: Gilbert Melendez  vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri
Light Heavyweight bout: Gegard Mousasi vs. Keith Jardine
Lightweight bout: Shinya Aoki vs. Lyle Beerbohm

I learned last night after watching Bellator that you never count out the underdog. Pat Curran stood in there for 25 minutes and took a fuckin beating from Alvarez. I think I had read the odds were like 6 to 1 against Curran? Wonder what the odds are against Jardine considering the striking caliber of Mousasi and the short notice.

I think this is interesting but not for any of the reasons mentioned above. This is exactly the blueprint for how UFC could use the Strikeforce nameplate as a way to 'rehabilitate' or at least recapitalize fighters who came up under the UFC brand. Why give Shark Fights (or Shine Fights, or Titan FC, or anybody else) the 'pop' of having a main event like Jardine vs Alexander, where both guys built their recognition under the UFC nameplate, when you could use Strikeforce? And for that matter, what about fighters that are past their prime but still have compelling, interesting fights out there that people would pay to see (i.e. Couture vs. Fedor)? Neither guy is going to be a world champion again...but don't they still have some compelling wars to wage?
The reality is that the 'pop' of the UFC brand alone is probaby worth it...but this way you can not pollute the UFC brand (think Ambercrombie and Fitch) while still developing and catering to folks who don't care about the name on the label (think the Gap).

It's nice to see Jardine stepping up in competition again. If nothing else you can definitely say he is one of those fighters who says he'll fight whoever you put in front of him and not complain about it. I'd like to see the Dean of Mean get back on track but I do think Mousasi has this one.

I'm really starting to feel sorry for this guy

I never knew Jardine was a member of the Black Panthers. Someone should remind him to bring his glove next time though.

Awesome replacement! It's all big names on this main card. I'm interested to watch this fight, in fact all these fights are great style matchups.

By the way did anyone catch the April Fools edition of Price is Right? Hilarious.

this strikeforce thing might give ufc a run for it's money!!!

I agree with Snitches_get_stitches. Jardine has been in there with some of the best and won a couple of them. Regardless of his recent down turn he's always a threat. All around though this is a pretty sweet card.

I don't know. Never count the dean out. But my guess is the dreamcatcher got this. :-)

strach... wtf...
Snitches_get_stitches- April 2, 2011 at 9:09 am
Jardine can give Mousasi problems, higher chances of winning then a strach ticket making you a millionaire.

I still beleive Gegard will take it with his better stand up game.
