Jon Fitch: ‘If Koscheck is Able to Win the Belt and Defend the Belt, I Will Move Up to 185′

(Video courtesy Sportsnet)

Sportsnet’s "Showdown" Joe Ferraro sat down with Jon Fitch this past weekend in Vancouver and, among other topics, spoke with the American Kickboxing Academy fighter about the UFC’s welterweight landscape and his teammate, Josh Koscheck‘s year-end showdown with 170-pound champion. Georges St-Pierre.

Not surprisingly, Fitch is picking Kos to beat GSP, and says that if it happens and Josh successfully defends his belt,  he’ll move up to middleweight indefinitely.

"The first fight, Koscheck lost the fight to a takedown. He won the first round, lost the second round and in the third he shoots a single, switches of to a double and Georges is able to defend it and sprawl and Josh has to pull guard," Fitch said. "That was the deciding factor in that fight, so it will be interesting to see where this fight goes now. I don’t know if will be as much of a wrestling match as it was the first time. There might be a lot more striking involved. It’s a tough fight and its an interesting fight, but I think Koscheck’s gonna win it."

"To me there’s no reason to fight a teammate. It’s just not a fight we’re interested in at all," Fitch explained. "It’s a situation where, if Koscheck is able to win the belt and defend the belt, I will move up to 185. I think I have a good size frame. I can put on 15 pounds. I may have to take a month off or so to put on some weight, but that process may take over a year from now. I’ll have fought every welterweight worth fighting by then."

I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Fitch won’t be going anywhere and it sounds like he isn’t 100 percent convinced he’ll need to jump up in weight either.

"[If Georges wins] I’ll be waiting on the front doorsteps with flowers [for a title shot]."

Kos lost on a TD WTF Jon? Kos lost all of 90 seconds in a 15 min fight. GSP controlled Kos for 3:30 sec in round 1 and then got reversed. He owned Kos on the ground all of round 2 and picked him apart badly on the feet in round 3 and then stuffed the TD attempt and finished up on the ground. That was NOT i repeat NOT a close fight Jon..

Alves is probably gonna beat him anyway in that rematch so Fitch getting a rematch with GSP will not happen. Even if he beats Alves so what? GSP destroyed Fitch for 5 rounds in a complete one sided beating.. Who would want to pay to see that again??

Won't fight a teammate? Then don't fight at all. It's an individual sport, not a team event.

This isn't a feel-good Hollywood movie where the downtrodden kid from the rough part of town does the honourable thing as a show of respect for his older/mentor best friend by refusing to fight him. Just so the older, even more downtrodden dude can go down by a dirty trick by the dirty fighter in a street title match, only to be avenged by his younger buddy in the follow-up revenge/proper justice match.

This is real life, with real championships and real millions to be had from real sponsors. These AKA fighters are clowns.

My point was, who gives a shit about divisional rankings when you have no new contenders. As far as I'm concerned, Fitch, Fraggle Rosscheck, and Alves are #'s 2-10 at WW and Kampmann is 11. GSP has already beaten all of those first 3, and Kampmann still has some earning to do for a title shot. Kos had the best showing, but that was against the GSP of 3 years ago. Alves got owned when GSP had a pulled groin for shitsakes!

Way I see it, you got Jake Shields as a possible contender, but there are 2 problems with that.

1: He is boring as hell, and so is GSP. There is a chance that the wrestling will cancel out and we will see a stand up battle, but the risk of a fence pushing top controlling snoozer is huge. It is a tough fight to sell in my opinion, for a champ who is normally a big draw.

2: No immediate title shots. If Strikeforce is as bush league as Dana always says, it would be insulting to give their champ an immediate shot at the immortal GSP. We all know Dana tends to make the "truth" be whatever suits needs at the time, but still. Make him fight first. I would say two fights, but at least make him beat Fitch. In the unlikely event that FraKosggle beats GSP, that will keep Fitch busy long enough for the inevitable rubber match, and if Fitch loses to Shields then Dana can tell him to stuff the title talk and beat 6 or 7 more guys.

Other scenario is to have the big 3 of Kos, Fitch, and Alves take their respective turns at GSP while Kampmann and any other possible contenders develop a bit more. And if Kampmann is impressive in his next outing, then give him to Fitch or Alves, or Kos depending on the time frame, and assuming GSP beats the wily Fraggle.

So, if GSP and Alves win, where does that leave Fitch and Bob Ross? Alves would undoubtedly earn the next title shot. Does that mean Fitch and Koscheck get ranked #3 and #4? Who will they fight, and how would they move "up" in rankings by fighting lesser ranked opponents?

This whole "not fighting teammates" is bullshit because it screws up divisional rankings and prospective matchups, most notably in the welterweight division. If Fitch and Koscheck won't fight each other, then neither deserve a title shot (after GSP whips Koscheck again that is) period.

Personally, I see Alves beating Fitch, GSP beating Koscheck, then GSP beating Alves again in the next title shot bout.

If Koscheck does beat GSP, would GSP not deserve an immediate rematch like Penn vs. Edgar? Losing to Bob Ross should not drop GSP to anything lower than number one contender. Losing two in a row to Koscheck, then yes, maybe. But not by just losing once.

Best solution... move Fitch to LW, and Koscheck to MW. Problem solved. Fitch might get a title shot there, and Koscheck can get his ass kicked repeatedly.

And another thing, Fitch is a sexy dude. Y'all need to back up off my man. Nothing wrong with looking like a slightly oily catfish every now and then.
ghostboner- June 16, 2010 at 8:28 pm
So, if Kos and Fitch fight now then we have one less legit contender at WW. Is that what you want? Hmmmmm??? Say Kos wins, and he and Fitch fight for the title. Then what? They have both fought Alves already. I guess If Kos beats Fitch and GSP then Alves could make a case for a title shot since he beat the Fraggle. And GSP could demand fight number 3 with Fraggle. But realistically, there are not many people at 170 who I even see being on the level to beat any of them anytime soon, so I dunno why you are all bitching. Martin Kampmann is probably the the closest thing to a contender outside of those 4.

Fitch is awesome, anyone who says otherwise is a licker of ball sacks and a sniffer of schmegma.

Has Fitch been taking mma judging classes from Ed Soares? does he really think the first GSP - Kockcheck fight was decided on one takedown? Ok, so technically Koscheck would have won the first round because let's face it, most MMA judges are legally blind and retarded. I mean, that round was mostly on the ground and gsp was on top for 3 of those 5 minutes so I seriously don't know how a judge would call it for Koscheck, but anyways, he spent the next two rounds whiffing on hail mary haymakers and getting picked apart in the stand up before getting taken down and spending the rest of the fight fighting off submission attempts. He probably also thinks that in HIS fight with GSP if it weren't for all those punches to and knees he took to the face he probably would have won.
Dick_Misanthropenis- June 16, 2010 at 6:58 pm
I actually have a serious question:

Has John Fitch been getting voice coaching from Nick Ring? I never noticed he had that super gay lisp before, and now he's talking about "we're not interested in that fight" and he wants to give GSP flowers. It's just all so strange...
cagefightmon- June 16, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Can you say steroids and/or HGH?!!!

Holy shit!! Every fighter is slowly changing their facial features bc of it!!
Dick_Misanthropenis- June 16, 2010 at 6:41 pm
John Fitch should grow a blond fro. He and the fraggle could moonlight as Thing 1 & Thing 2 from the Cat in the Hat, cleaning up nasty ring stains wherever they go.
Dick_Misanthropenis- June 16, 2010 at 6:38 pm
I still hate everything.
ccman- June 16, 2010 at 6:36 pm
Big difference tai. Machida and silva are in different weight classes. We just WANT silva to move up. Kos and fitch cleaned out the division in tandem.
PurplePickle- June 16, 2010 at 6:12 pm
I like contradictory hyperbole.
Tai-Pan- June 16, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Just want to note, hypotheticals and counterfactuals are hella fun.
Tai-Pan- June 16, 2010 at 5:53 pm
If he beats Alves and Kos loses to GSP, then who the fuck else gets a title shot but Fitch? He has cleaned out the division nearly as much as GSP, with the exception of Koscheck.

If they truly won't fight each either then I don't want to see the damn fight anyway. And I guess we can just send Machida and Anderson down to the bush leagues as well, idiots.
Almost North- June 16, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Yeah and if the tooth fairy rings my doorbell this afternoon I'll give a fuck about unlikely hypotheticals.
fatbellyfrank- June 16, 2010 at 5:39 pm
And yeah What Noizy said 100%
fatbellyfrank- June 16, 2010 at 5:36 pm
I was always of the impression that MMA was more an individual sport, sure you have your training camp and your buddies, but when it comes down to it, you fight for yourself, If you don't have the discipline and professionalism to fight who's in front of you, whatever the circumstances, then perhaps UFC is a cuppla levels too elite for you and you should stick to bush league promotions where you can cuddle your buddies all night long.
ccman- June 16, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Why bitch? Break up the man crush of aka in 170 and spread bad boring fighters out. Think silva is worried about any of em? Lol. Better yet offer the lot of em only each other. Send em to sf and watch em look for a fight beyond each other there.
cecils_pupils- June 16, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Don't worry Fitch, your little troll-boy teammate will never beat GSP. Now go take a fuckin' shower and get a damn haircut already! Sheesh!
PurplePickle- June 16, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Fitch should put on 100 lbs and move to HW. That seems to be the only place wrestlers seem to finish fights anymore.
justscrappin- June 16, 2010 at 5:00 pm
Yup....Georges doesn't like his chin checked....and Koscheck won't be able to stop him from hugging.
fightfan- June 16, 2010 at 4:55 pm
Man does he look dirty and greasy?? He must be REALLY scared of KOS. I know and am so sick of the whole teammate vs teammate shit. But this is for the shot at the most prestigous position in mma. If Fitch wasnt such a boyfriend to Kos, he should be making noise about this, and NOT thinking more about someone elses career. Fitch is 12-1 and Kos is 12-4 in UFC?? or maybe 13, but it is 4 losses for Kos and 3-2 in past 5(and he loses to ANYONE rated in top 10 or 15). Alves beat the living piss out of him.

I cant beleive Fitch is just gonna "move up" to 185 next year IF Josh wins the belt. Fitch fought MUCH, MUCH harder guys with NO big names...while Kos gets big names who are so past their prime(Trigg) or so 1 dimensional(YOshida, Daley).

But if FItch wants his DREAM to be lived by someone eles and is OK with wasting 5 years and NO losses, EXCEPT to the champ to give the rematch to someone who ALREADY lost also to GSP...then Fitch aint all there, or knows that Kos is much better. Such a shame, Dana White tried once again at the presss conference afer Fitch last fought.....when Fitch spoke about title shot rematch he wants SO BADLY. Dana White said how about fighting Josh?? Of course, he said NO and Dana said you dont want it that bad. I agree 100%

This fight is gonna be a lame grapple-fest that goes to a close decision.
