Jon Fitch is Feeling a Little Overlooked

Jon Fitch has a new blog entry up on in which he discusses his training at AKA in preparation for the bout with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87 next Saturday. Sounds like he’s none too pleased about all this GSP-B.J. Penn talk, as if it’s just a given that St. Pierre will walk though him en route to another meeting with “The Prodigy”:

Working like we do, when people are talking about how good certain fighters are, one of our first questions is, ‘who does he train with?’ That’s always a big question because I don’t care how good you are; if you don’t train with anybody at your level, you’re very limited in how good you can be and how good you actually are.

Outside of training, I’ve heard some talk over the last few weeks about BJ Penn moving up to 170 to fight GSP at the end of the year. Of course, they’ve forgotten that GSP has a fight with me first. But that just shows you where some people really are still in this sport and how they still have no idea what’s going on. There are a lot of so-called experts out there, but they know nothing about the sport. They’re spectators on the outside watching the sport through a telescope, and they think they’re on the inside and know everything, but they don’t. You can’t let that stuff bother you though. I think it’s funny and it’s just that little extra pleasure at the end of the day when you win and all those people are exposed.

Are we supposed to take this to mean that Fitch thinks GSP is generally overrated? We certainly hope not. Fitch’s win streak and overall skills make him deserving of the respect he’s getting, but so is GSP. Of all the strategic errors you could make when facing the welterweight champ, underestimating him really shouldn’t be one of them. Even if you are right behind him in the all-important Cage Potato Power Rankings.

GSP is a true best pound for pound fighter. That DEVIL guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Records for having straight wins doesn't amount to being best pound for pound. Just think about it, he dominated those that got "lucky" against him during his rematches. Hughes got lucky with the armbar and Serra got lucky with a right hand punch but during the rematches, GSP DOMINATED THEM. C'mon, the only way Fitch can win this is if he gets LUCKY too. Fitch has a good straight win record right now but he hasn't really fought against ANYBODY WORTHY. GSP has shown his superb skills against the best of the best in the UFC such as BJ Trigg, Kocheck, Sherk, and the Legendary Matt Hughes. I have alot of respect for Fitch but I really don't think he's ready for GSP.

GSP has been a wrestler because he WANTED to be one in those fights to show how he dominates fools even in their specialty. Fitch has all the tools though, and it won't be as easy against him. GSP still needs to prove he holds that belt [as in defend successfully] to be considered the shit.

Fitch has a badass dog!!!!!!
manyhem420- July 30, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Yea I noticed that since Serra KO'd him that GSP as been basicly a wrestler...
Which is how he beat Koscheck and Serra....
Its almost like he doesnt want to stand in the pocket anymore...
maybe a little gun shy?

English Bulldog?= New favorite fighter!!

I think that Fitch has a fairly good shot at winning this fight, and while I don't think that GSP is overrated, completely. I think it's a little ridiculous that he was being considered a pound for pound candidate up there with Anderson Silva and Fedor. The man as stated above has lost twice in his past twelve fights, has been knocked out by a has been in the more recent history. That doesn't scream "pound for pound" to me.
Does GSP have what it takes to beat Fitch?

Anyone else notice that it appears that GSP is afraid to strike after getting KO'ed?

I am not a so-called expert. I'm a so-called Sexpert, and this will be one hell of a fight!
Matt Serra- July 30, 2008 at 10:36 am
Yo Sebas, I am not still pissing blood.... my shit gets hard just fine.... go ask your mom about it she'll tell you all about it. Be nice she might show you the pictures too!
Markus- July 30, 2008 at 9:53 am
RHV took the words right out of my mouth. To me, it doesn't sound like he thinks GSP is overrated, he's just thinking that people are underestimating him.
Jeff- July 30, 2008 at 9:16 am
I'm rooting for GSP but I have a really bad feeling that he's gonna get upset, giving him a reputation as a choke job and opening Canada up to 7 more years of ridicule.
Sebas- July 30, 2008 at 6:37 am
YO matt serra just call me...
He's still pissing blood from ufc83...
VEe!- July 30, 2008 at 6:09 am
No, Fitch doesn't think GSP is overrated.
No, Fitch doesn't sound upset.

He sounds pretty nonchalant about the whole ordeal. He's been overlooked for quite a while. I think this fight will definitely go past the 3 round mark and it may prove to be one of the most exciting fights that we recently seen.

I think Fitch does have a chance just like any other fighter to win, but i think people overlook his fight because they WANT to see GSP VS PENN much more and cant stop thinking about it,

I'm a GSP fan more than Penn, but with that fight i thought Penn Won or atleast drew the fight. It was controversial and the two are Star fighters of the organization. So everyone WANTS to see it happen, nothing against Fitch Tho.

Lets Hope GSP keep evolving and show everyone he's still a tough SOB to step to.

MUAY THAI.....anyone?
John- July 30, 2008 at 3:38 am
LOL, that's just wat Matt Serra said

but it would be wrong of me to pool Fitch with Serra, as Serra DOESN"T BELONG IN THE UFC

Ok- I think everyone is saying the same thing here (except for that Sebas guy). Fitch's point about the so called experts is right on point. It must be tough to deal with the blogosphere as an MMA fighter. Everybody gets shit on. Only the fighters know their own true potential.
Mark's Right- July 30, 2008 at 1:00 am
Well i think jon fitch isnt upset that GSP is Overrated as a fighter, i think hes more upset that he is so under rated in comparison to him. i think fitch in round 2, tko
Russell- July 30, 2008 at 12:30 am
Yeah, you have it wrong. He doesnt think GSP is overrated.. he's upset that people automatically assume that GSP will still be champion come December when he faces Penn.
RJK- July 30, 2008 at 12:22 am
In a way GSP is a little to hyped up. He isn't dominant like an Anderson Silva or a Fedor. Does he win yes but he is far from dominant. His last 12 fights he lost twice, 4 went to decision. That isn't dominant.
Fitch certainly has a good chance to win. Is he the underdog?, yeah. I for one will be rooting for him.
well- July 30, 2008 at 12:06 am
i do agree with jon fitch that there's a lot of so-called experts out there, such as the kids who claimed kimbo would steamroll through james thompson, because everybody claimed thompson to have a "glass chin". but in this case, fitch has to understand that gsp is so dominant.. and that fitch hasn't really done anything too spectacular in his fights - he just wins his fights
Sebas- July 29, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Fitch..your too ugly to be a champ! No one wants to see you wear that belt.
Shut up and go masturbate with broken glass
RHV- July 29, 2008 at 11:20 pm
It's not that Fitch thinks GSP is overrated, it's that he thinks he's underrated.

He's just upset he's being overlooked.
you know it- July 29, 2008 at 11:03 pm
I am pretty sure John does not think GSP is overrated. Hes just upset at the fact everyone is talking about GSP's next fight after Fitch as if he already beat Fitch. I feel Fitch has a very solid chance at beating GSP. He just has to try and beat the best welterwight out there. Like Matt Serra proved anythign is possible. Mind you Fitch is alot better than Matt Serra.
Fedor Emelianenko DVD- July 29, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Jon is way too smart to think that GSP is overrated. I think it's a regular bad-mouthing process all fighters on the UFC's main card undergo to hype up their fights.
