Nobody likes to lose, but there’s losing like a man and there’s losing like a six-year-old. In the above video from NBC Sports Jon Fitch ups his stock by taking his loss to Georges St. Pierre as well as can be expected. Not only did he prove his toughness by hanging in against GSP for five rounds, he also showed up to the press conference even though his face looked like he’d just made out with a wolverine. That’s an honorable competitor, right there.
For fighting his heart out and for this display of gentlemanly sportsmanship, we extend to Jon Fitch our rarely-awarded Cage Potato ‘Atta Boy (award has no implied or actual monetary value). We’d like to also give one to Dana White for trying to subtly replace Fitch’s beer with a bottle of water while he’s answering questions from reporters, but we only have so many of these fake awards lying around.

commentsUFC is minus a few poster boys recently with Liddell, and Franklin, and Randy, and Tito, out of the picture perse.
We could use some fresh faces, like Forrest, and Fitch, and GSP.
I tell you I would love to see Fitch as a coach on one of the TUF seasons.
but...i've looked way worse than that the day after 4 street fights in one night- last fight lasted a reported 45 minutes...two dudes wailin away at each other on a street corner one night somewhere in the midwestern USA...one just couldn't put the other one out ...took knees then soccer kicks straight to my face but didn't blank for a second...i recall cracking the dude in the face with l-r's then dropping my arms to my sides giving him his chance...we bolt bolted as the po po finally showed up...not little dudes either. went to the ER for stitches and xrays- girlfriend's dad was the attending doctor...make that ex girlfriend.
that was over 20 years ago...i do not advocate street fighting.
WAR FITCH!!!
You've missed the point. Why should anyone have to mute the channel or look away in order to appreciate the fight? I said Fitch is the man because he was funny in his interview. It's observational. If he had been a dick I would have said, man that dude's a dick. It has nothing to do with "buying into" anything. I just don't think that things like character or persona need enter into the combat sport arena. From a marketing standpoint, I understand it. Do I like it? Fuck no. As far as acting above it? I AM above it. If I could cut that BS out of MMA, I would in a heartbeat, but that (among many other things) is why I'm not the head of a million dollar MMA company.
Damnit Dana, let the man have a beer or two.
Douchebag antics in NFL is how they build team rivalries and get fans to pay to watch. They only get fined if they bad mouth the NFL organization or their own teammates.
If you don't want any other drama, just mute it till the fight starts and shut it off as soon as the fight ends. Everything else is just to build drama and get people cheering for one man over the other one. You can act above it but you are really buying into it as soon as you say "fitch is the man"
Geriatric Peon, I'd agree with you if this was an episode of Star Trek, but since it isn't, and instead it's a sport that I dump a lot of money into, I'd prefer not to have to suffer through douchebag antics like Lesnar's and Ortiz's. How come this point doesn't come up in the NFL? If you show bad sportsmanship there, you get fined thousands of dollars. That's the way it is. I don't want pro-wrestling's dramatic devices applied to MMA. I just want to see two warriors step into the ring and step out of it with honor. Outside the ring, go ahead and be a jackass, cause there I'm not paying to watch you.
Also: something has to be done about this posting comments too quickly thing.
