Josh Barnett Says He’d Like to Fight to the Death, Bas Rutten Laughs Enthusiastically

(VidProps: YouTube/ZP420MMA)

With the opening bouts of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament less than a month away, embattled grand prix participant Josh Barnett turned up on HDNet’s Inside MMA over the weekend, where he and Bas Rutten both just started saying stuff. Protest if you want, but it makes for great TV when nobody is around to check facts or rein in the insanity. Clearly, Barnett and Bas just want to bro down, have a couple of drinks and reminisce about how radical it used to be to be King of Pancrase, leaving poor Kenny Rice to try to bumble his way through some actual journalism.

Things reach a fever pitch of awesomeness at about the 3:40 mark, when Rice asks Barnett a serious question about his efforts (or lack thereof) to get relicensed in California. Barnett dismissively waves his hands and pretty much says he doesn’t give a damn, that he doesn’t need no pencil-pushing lawmakers to tell him when and where he throws down. All the while Bas just chuckles to himself and mumbles stuff like “Right! Yeah!” as if to say “You tell it, brother!” Seriously, these guys are two peas in a pod …

“At the end of the day, I don’t care where I fight, I really don’t …,” Barnett says. “When Bas and I started we fought (with) no rules for no money, for no reason. (Cue laughter from Bas, who then repeats, “No reason!” like that’s the greatest thing ever.) This isn’t like some sort of lifestyle — wear the clothing, be the guy, say I’m a cagefighter — I don’t care about any of that. If they took all the rules away, I’d still fight. I remember reading somewhere, someone said, ‘I don’t know if there was an opportunity to fight to the death, how many MMA fighters would truly ever take that opportunity.’ I thought about it and I thought, you know, I probably would. I’d do it.”

At which point we can only assume that Stefan Struve and Anthony Pettis (who are flanking Barnett at the Inside MMA guest table) both look at him like he’s an absolute fool. If not, they should have.

“I’ve tried to work with (the commission),” Barnett also says, “but there have obviously been some difficulties. Especially like the last time, when I followed through on their behest – they actually approached me – so I go through their steps, I meet with their head of their commission and I figured everything was square. So I prepared as instructed and showed up and found something entirely different altogether.”

“Why is this a surprise to you?” Asks a commiserating Bas, who you can tell just wants to laugh and slap Barnett on the back and say “Oh man, those craaazy athletic commissions!” but somehow restrains himself.

“There are 49 other states,” Barnett goes on. “There are a gazillion other countries in the world. If every country in the world outlawed MMA, I’d still be fighting. I don’t need anybody to tell me to do it or give me permission.”

So, what Barnett is saying is that he just likes to fight, without regard to the rules or regulations. As if his entire career to this point hasn’t been a testament to that sad fact.

@Bill Jackson:

I think the reason a lot of people dislike Josh Barnett is that he pissed hot multiple times, has denied ever using steroids, and one of his botched attempts to get away with cheating contributed to the failing of an entire MMA promotion. That alone places him in a different category from the fighters you just mentioned.

In addition to that, Barnett is also difficult to like because he has reacted to his tarnished reputation by behaving like a smug asshole most of the time. It's like the dude got caught cheating and can't fess up to it, so instead he incessantly rails against the system of rules and regulations that no longer allows him to cheat, and just about goes so far as to say that bar fights are better than the MMA of today.

The big hole in Barnett's perspective is that MMA is more than just fighting. It's an organized, regulated, spectator combat sport. If it was just two dudes fighting to the death on a desert island somewhere, most of his arguments would be correct. Barnett's repeated cheating behavior is bad for the sport's reputation, especially a young sport that is still in the process of becoming regulated and legalized in different places.

Well if anything this is probably the most honest interview Barnett has ever given.

This thread is so full of hilarity that Will Ferrel just called and wants to do an MMA movie.  Props times MASSIVE to steampunk (indian name:  works with his hands), L. Wapo, Fred Taco, Seoul Trane, and RwR.  Dude, the Tucson remark?  Fucking GOLD.

Two things.

First, Josh Barnett is fucking awesome. I don't know how people hate on this guy so much. Did he test hot? Yea. Did Stephan Bonnar, Chris Leben, Nate Marquardt, Vitor Belfort, Royce Gracie, etc. also test hot? Yes. And they get plenty of love. Barnett even fought Nastula who tested positive afterwards and he never cared. The guy is true to his word.

Second, only a few State's commissions uphold the rulings from other states. Nevada, California, and New jersey being the main three. But anything goes in many of the states, especially the south. They don't even test in Texas. And even if they all did uphold California's rulings, there is always Indian reservations.

dude.....thats incredible....he doesnt want to simply be known as the man who killed affliction, he wants to be the man who killed mma.

Someone tell Barnett that when he fights in Australia, it's not really the Thunderdome.
WalksInTheDarkness- January 24, 2011 at 2:58 pm
@LOKI

He tapped to having his orbital broken by that crazy Croation, see Bob Sapp and Kazushi Sakuraba who suffered similar Cro Cop related injuries.

@steampunk22
Homeboy, Dan Quinn has already got that cold fusion shit down with his stevia. (I couldn't help myself)

Overeem: Live or die, man?
Barnett: Die.
Overeem: Wrong.
[honks Barnett's nose]

@lesner.

Yed the ufc is a company. The one that unified the rules and probably paid for wherever you live to regulate mma, or is currently doing so. The company that saved u.s. mma from becoming a strickly regiona joke. Think there is a bellator minus the ufc? Think sf ever gets out of san jose?

Seriously, who else had the jack and intestinal fortitude to suffer the loses until it turned the corner? Or do you want more gracies fighting fake resumes shows?

One thing's for damn sure:

We won't ever hear Renzo Gracie say "you were still in yo' fadder's nutsack" to Barnett's kids.
cecils_pupils- January 24, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Shame on HD Net for continuing to give him a forum to air his idiocy.
cecils_pupils- January 24, 2011 at 1:16 pm
I thought something was smelly in here... it's Josh's nutsack shriveling up.
steampunk22- January 24, 2011 at 12:59 pm
It's more likely that we will see a Leprechaun-powered perpetual motion machine that simultaneously proves nuclear cold fusion while laying fuckin' unicorn eggs then we will see this dickbag fight anywhere in America.

ROFLMAO! @ El Guapo

Sniffer-Piffits- January 24, 2011 at 12:49 pm
I like the match up talked about earlier with Barnett and the polar bear. That would only happen if the polar bear didn't demand olympic style testing...
Koeikan- January 24, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Fuck Barnett. He sounds like a fucking sociopath with who makes logical fallacies skewed to fit his world view. Asshole!

I'd like to punch his stupid face, if I wasn't certain doing so would conclude my life.
Sniffer-Piffits- January 24, 2011 at 12:37 pm
Josh Barnett said that he never took any steroids. He says that he owes his god-like body to his new training regiment.... Running backwards through corn fields naked.
BlackLesnar- January 24, 2011 at 12:32 pm
LOL @ UFC is a "sport". MMA is a sport. UFC is a BUSINESS. First and foremost. Everything it does (for the most part) is to line its pockets (like a business should).
LOKI- January 24, 2011 at 12:32 pm
Didnt he tap to strikes the 3rd time CroCop beat his ass?
mikemoriendi- January 24, 2011 at 12:11 pm
When he was asked if he would be in New Jersey fighting in the tournament he just simply answered that he would be in the tournament. I think he knows that his fights probably won't be in the US.
ccman- January 24, 2011 at 12:10 pm
And after asshats like this talk I still have to defend knees and kicks to downed opponents? Why I laugh at peeps who watch pride on youtube and think how we need to return to this?

Best note to "pride was better and had better fighters". Wandi whom I enjoy, was owned in the ufc and was a killer in pride. Nog same. Dudes 32, should be in his prime athletically. Pride was a specticle, ufc is a sport.

Lastly.....Welcome to reason #5 gazillion sf gp fails. Barnett will kill it with m~1 fiddling. The guy is clueless, has zero respect for the sport, and bas lost me agreeing to a word of this. Seriously, bas got paid and knos it.
Cock_Chestnar- January 24, 2011 at 12:02 pm
Dear Josh,

Go back to the Vampire Diaries and fake wrestling....leave this MMA thing to fighters that can pass a piss test.
The Fresh One- January 24, 2011 at 11:47 am
Won't other states uphold the CSAC sanctions? I really want to see Barnett fight, in the cage he's one of my fav's, but SF needs to ditch this assbag before he ruins this thing. Get Cormier in there.
