Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga to Co-Headline ‘UFC on Versus’

Junior Dos Santos and Gabriel Gonzaga were originally supposed to throw down at UFC 108, before a staph infection put Napao down for the count. Now that Gonzaga is recovering, the UFC has officially announced that the heavyweight matchup has been rescheduled to UFC Fight Night 21 in March (aka "UFC on Versus"), where it will serve as a lead-in to the Jon Jones vs. Brandon Vera main event. If you look up you’ll see all four men, not exactly mean-mugging, but serious-mugging at the very least.

Dos Santos is currently on a 4-0 tear in the Octagon, scoring dramatic wins over Fabricio Werdum (KO, round 1), Stefan Struve (TKO, round 1), Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (TKO/bitchassness, round 3), and Gilbert Yvel (TKO, round 1); Yvel filled in for Gonzaga at UFC 108. Gonzaga’s last cage-appearance was a TKO win over a nut-crushed Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 102.

what a horrible time for directv to cancel versus !

Oh man can't wait to watch Vera put the hurt on Jones! JBJ is going to be hungry after that Hammil DQ and he is going to be overconfident. Vera 2nd round. Or possibly Vera will get KO'd by knees to the head on the ground and then after his 2nd Dq in 2 fights Jones will throw up his hands in frustration and yell "Shit! Can't I do anything!?"

Jones is a very exciting and orthodox striker with excellent wrestling. Vera has great striking and ok wrestling. On paper Jones has the advantage I'd say but you never know. I'm pulling for Nepao on this one. I like them both but I've always liked Gonzaga. If he gets Dos Santos down he may have the advantage. Dos Santos has great BJJ skills but hasn't really had to use them. He's been on a knock out streak. All in all I think this will be an exciting card made all that much better by the fact that it's on cable. Looking forward to this one for sure

Soda I just mean that Vera is one of the best dudes out there of frustrating someone with his elusiveness, or in Dubya's words, "Can't wait to see how he handles an opponent that refuses to engage him. Vera fights like a bitch! Afraid to get that mug of his a little bruised up."

Its sad but true, I see Jones winning a decision by continually coming forward, but I guarantee it wont look like it did when he fought Bonnar or the Hammer.

Your crystal ball should show you something like this from March 21st 2010(from a over the shoulder pov during the JDS fight).....

rogan: "oh he got him"
goldberg: "Down goes Napao!"
rogan: "Gonzaga looks hurt?!"
goldber: "It is all over! herb dean steps in"
rogan: "wow..."

@portland mma
JDS is for real! He'll take Mir I hope after Mir exposes Carwin.

NECROPHYTE- January 13, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Fuck I don't think Directv carries Versus ANYMORE:(
One Two- January 13, 2010 at 2:25 pm
veras gonna beat the crap outta Jon "weed snitch" Jones. Dos Santos luck has gotta wear out.
Koeikan- January 13, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Sweet... And I agree this is more PPV worthy than 108 was (on paper).
Merlin- January 13, 2010 at 1:56 pm
-This is a card to get excited about.
I hope JDS puts the beat down on Gonzaga & goes on to win the title from the interior leaking Brock.
And yes although Vera is a great stand up fighter he lacks that killer instinct & because of that he will never been a CHAMP like , Quinton, Forest, Sherk, Hughes or even Serra.

This is a great card. Much more worthy of ppv statist than UFC 108. Maybe giving it to us free is their way of making up for that crapfest.
Dubya- January 13, 2010 at 1:50 pm
Jones is an exciting up and comer. Love watching that guy destroy opponents. Can't wait to see how he handles an opponent that refuses to engage him. Vera fights like a bitch! Afraid to get that mug of his a little bruised up. Let's hope this is his last fight in the UFC octagon.

@Jon Jones
Does us all a favor and destroy this foo!!
831 Father- January 13, 2010 at 1:22 pm
Wait, Greg Jackson cornered fighter than isn't GSP, Rashad or Nate? Loss via finish.
831 Father- January 13, 2010 at 1:20 pm
UFC 109: Relentless looks like a MUCH better card and we get the privilege to pay for it.

Call your local cable provider to order UFC 109. Or you may go to Yahoo! and purchase the show at the same price and watch it online but in lower quality.

Do your part and buy UFC 109 both online and on PPV and support great cards.

portland mma, please explain.

and any dude thats got bones coming at you, you can expect some pain.

for some dudes...pleasure.

portland mma- January 13, 2010 at 1:11 pm
$3 says Vera is the kind of fighter that will make Bones Jones look less exciting then he ever has...not saying Jones won't win, it just wont be as crazy as him and Bonnar or Hamill. Dos Santos and Gonzaga is going to be a war, I'm going to have to go with Dos Santos on this one though.
superflat- January 13, 2010 at 1:07 pm
This card is looking more compelling that UFC 108 already. Gonzaga vs. Dos Santos is going to be violent.
just some dong- January 13, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Sounds like another loss for Vera. I'm genuinely starting to feel bad for the guy...

Dos Santos/Gonzaga should be good.

Soda Popinski- January 13, 2010 at 1:04 pm
now we're talking.

3$ says vera is the first death in the octagon.
