(Dos Santos knocked out Stefan Struve in 54 seconds. Nelson knocked out Struve in 39 seconds. It’ll be a stretch, but we’re confident that the UFC can somehow twist that into a "grudge match" angle.)
According to a report published this morning on MMA Junkie, a heavyweight tilt between Junior Dos Santos and Roy Nelson is being targeted for UFC 117 (August 7th, Oakland). Nelson was previously slated to fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 116 in July, but Kongo won’t be able to make that date because of a back injury, and since Dos Santos had been stuck in a holding pattern without an opponent, it seems that the UFC will have Cigano and Big Country square off against each other. Dos Santos has already stated that he’d be down to fight the TUF 10 winner, and Nelson would also welcome the matchup:
"That might be a fight that might happen. I’m hoping, all you can do is hope…If you think about who’s out there fighting for the belt, or getting ready to fight for the belt it would be Brock (Lesnar) of course and Shane (Carwin), and then right underneath them it’s Dos Santos and Velasquez. So those are the four guys I’m looking for that can kind of catapult me right into belt contention."
Dos Santos has rolled over all five of his UFC opponents with his savage boxing skills, picking up four first-round KO/TKOs in the process (Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, Gilbert Yvel, Gabriel Gonzaga). But Nelson brings a level of experience, grappling prowess, and unconventional body type that might throw the streaking Brazilian off his game. UFC 117 will be headlined by the middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen. Also reported for the card are…
Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch
Ricardo Almeida vs. Matt Hughes
Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Tim Boetsch vs. Thiago Silva
Dennis Hallman vs. Ben Saunders

commentsGive it a chance: he maxes weight with a small frame, makes him tough to wrestle, doesn't get pushed around easily, and obviously hasn't been slowed in stand up from it, nor does he gas quickly. How many times have you heard how much air 265 of muscle needs to keep high paces? Guessin 30#s of fat might be easier.
I suppose, though, that I should know better than to judge a fighter by his shape - by looks alone Kimbo should destroy everyone in his path.
And I love the manties and all, but if Nelson ever enters the cage in a pair I might have to gouge my eyes out.
Thai clinch vs Nuclear Elbows and Atomic throws. Give it to Jones now while he has something to prove, not when he is trying to keep contendership safe and snug like Koscheck did Saturday night.
You know what it is? He made Cro Cop look like he just learned about mma from a buddy a decided to give it a try. I remember talkin up Cro Cop to all my buddys who were ignorant of Pride when he first came to the UFC, then them lookin at me like I'm some sort of retart. Naturally I hate anyone who makes me look retart.
Plus Nelson is soooo cool.

Sorry for robbin the two saints thing. Didn't read anything before I commented.
Gotcha . . . I wonder what it is about JDS you don't like. Are you a big grappling fan? Dislike big doofy introverted Brazilians? Let me know when you figure it out . . . just curious.
I really don't know if he'll win I just really really want it. For some reason I just don't like JDS. Hopefully Big Country will be able to take him down and put him away. I really like Nelson and want him to do well. I hear Ol' Two Saints hits real hard though.
I know you hate the human race because it takes one to know one. I have excellent sociopath-dar.
By 'anomaly' you mean he resembles a giant hunk of rock hurtling through space, right?
Anyway, I'm glad it's a better match up than I was thinking it would be!
How did you know I hate the human race... and women? You are quite skilled with the magic 8 ball. I agree with you, the smart money is on Das Santas, I wouldn't be surprised if that guy manages to wrestle the belt away from Carwin sometime next year. Like eveybody says though, Roy Nelson is a bit of an... anomaly, it's tuf to count the guy out.
I think the UFC has terribly mishandled A Silva. It's like they have Rembrandt on their roster but refuse to give him anything but broken cyan crayolas. I'm not excusing his behavior. The way he acts is bizarre - sort of like a badass Jedi master who has succumbed to the dark side. Or maybe the Bizzaro version of Superman. He needs real challenges - I know it's been said over and over but I'll be Goddamned if Joe Silva is getting the message. This guy transcends belts and titles - he's a superfight machine. None of us want the UFC to regress back into the dark ages of David vs Goliath match-ups but with A Silva it's different. He has the strength, speed, skills, bone density and adaptability to fight in any of weight class 185 and up. They should be using that and giving him real challenges. When it's all said and done, this sport isn't about belts or titles for us hardcore fans (I know I'm generalizing here - maybe not true for everybody). It's about dynamic, badass fights, it's about watching athletes take huge risks and overcome adversity armed with mental and physical training.
I think the UFC and A Silva should abandon ideas about defending or obtaining any title and let him off the leash. Generally, it's a bad practice - basically nobody else should fight in three divisions. But he could and should. There are exceptions to every rule and Silva is the exception.
Fights you would not see A Silva dance around like a crazy child:
A Silva vs:
Junior Dos Santos
Shane Carwin
Shogun
Machida (I know)
Lesner
Rampage
Belfort
Wanderlei (I know)
Jon Jones
Frank Mir
K-Sos
Velasquez
Gilbert Yvel
He coulda been a contenda.
I've said that shit before and had to eat crow (not Crowe - I'm not Lance Armstrong!).
