$30k Bonuses Doled Out at “Fight for the Troops”

(The grisly submission and the nasty knockout. Props: DW)

Broken bones, savage KOs, and Ben Saunders in full-on BEAST MODE — "UFC Fight for the Troops" was truly a night for America. Besides the money they raked in for the Fallen Heroes Fund, the UFC made some charitiable donations to four fighters who helped the night transcend its whatevs lineup, to the tune of $30,000 apiece. Here’s who got the extra helpings of bread:

Submission of the Night: Former WEC light-heavyweight champ Steve Cantwell, for snapping the arm of Razak al-Hassan. (Note to al-Hassan: We can understand coming into the Octagon without any ground game whatsoever, but are we really to believe that you were never instructed on how to tap?) Shockingly, this wasn’t the only broken bone of the night. One of Corey Hill‘s skinny legs snapped like a twig in the second round of his fight against Dale Hartt. Looking for a picture of the injury? Have an especially strong stomach? Then please, click here. Amazingly, video of the ill-fated fight is available for free on UFC.com.

Knockout of the Night: Josh Koscheck, for punching Yoshiyuki Yoshida into the fifth fucking dimension.

Fight of the Night: Jim Miller and Matt Wiman for their broadcast-opening three-rounder, which Miller took in a unanimous decision. It was a good fight and all, but we think those two bonuses could have gone to worthier recipients — namely, Ben Saunders for his Anderson Silva-like evisceration of Brandon Wolff, and Justin McCully for making sure we never have to see Eddie Sanchez fight in the UFC ever again.

Full results from last night are after the jump…

Josh Koscheck def. Yoshiyuki Yoshida via TKO, 2:15 of round 1
Mike Swick def. Jonathan Goulet via TKO, 0:33 of round 1
Steve Cantwell def. Razak Al-Hussan via submission (armbar), 4:04 of round 1
Tim Credeur def. Nate Loughran via TKO (verbal submission), 5:00 of round 2
Jim Miller def. Matt Wiman via unanimous decision
Luigi Fioravanti def. Brodie Farber via unanimous decision
Steve Bruno def. Johnny Rees via submission (rear-naked choke), 3:44 of round 2
Ben Saunders def. Brandon Wolff via TKO, 1:49 of round 1
Dale Hartt def. Corey Hill via TKO (referee stoppage due to broken leg), 0:20 of round 2
Justin McCully def. Eddie Sanchez via Unanimous Decision

you guys should re-attach your balls- December 17, 2008 at 6:11 am
cantwell's actions after the fight didn't bother me one bit. you ladies should all insert a tampon and go watch days of our lives. he trained for months, worked up the balls to climb in a cage in front of millions of fans on live tv and lay it on the line. he had a brilliant finish and it was his moment to relish it. a young kid on an adrenaline overload. lighten up. no different than BJ licking blood stained gloves. Mir celebrating breaking sylvia's arm, guys jumping the cage while a doc tends to a knockout.

if you guys were a running back in the superbowl and just scored a TD - something you have worked your entire sports career to achieve- would you do a little dance or would you go ask the lineman you just ran over if he's OK? im doin a little dance.

I don't generally watch UFC fights, nor do I watch boxing matches; for that matter, I don't watch much of anything... however, if I were to, I would be truly elated to see such carnage as broken limbs and blasted egos. To get angry and distraught because a fighter breaks the arm of another fighter is ridiculous! I'm glad he broke it and that he gloated about it. Fighters shouldn't be polite, fighters shouldn't be nice, they should be lean, mean, killing machines! If you were at all disgusted, appalled, or plain "rubbed the wrong way" by Cantwell, then maybe you shouldn't be watching these sorts of things in the first place. Shit or get off the pot, and remember why you really watch these things in the first place, BLOODLUST! Pussies.
Blaphtome- December 15, 2008 at 3:55 pm
I love when stupid people say limb injuries are worse than getting hit in the head. These are usually really tough guys. To test the reality of such statements, give someone a bat and ask them to hit you in the place of your choosing as hard as they can. I bet you don't pick the part that houses your brain tough guy, because that's the most important part right. Only an idiot would choose potential death or retardation over a limp or some ortho surgery. That said, maybe both Al-whatever and Cantwell did the right thing. Each was facing a once in a lifetime opportunity (not exactly the time for half-steppin). And Cory was that exact accident waiting to happen. This sport requires a certain level of phys. durability and I'm afraid his legs aren't up to the task and going up in weight won't make his bones any bigger or shorter, sorry. Maybe two years of recovery with an IGF-1 drip, but doubtful regardless. Whatever.

Its not like Cantwell caused any unecessary damage, after he broke the first arm he didnt try to break his other arm did he??? Did he try to add in a Liver punch or a kick to the balls??? No he just did what he had to do to win the fight.

That actually would have been really really funny.. I can just see cantwell running around the cage making breaking motions with his hands yelling "I broke it!" then turning and running up to al hassan and kicking him in the balls while he's still down. At least if he did that there wouldn't be so much argument over whether or not he's classless.

"If you intend on taking an opponent out but see that even the hold that you're applying is doing more harm then good then you should look for a way to end the fight in another manner."- HAHA I want to fight you im never going to tap(agaisnt you), I wont have to. You will just feel bad oooo no im gonna choke him unconcious I better let go.

"Yes Al-Hassan didn't tap and that was his fault, but why formulate an excuse for the necessity of a major injury to justify a stoppage?" One loss is all it takes to get fired and one win is all it takes to make the big leagues.

"Fact is, no matter what anyone says, things do happen inside an octagon, but there isnt any reason for a person to inflict unecessary damage to an opponent."

armfarmer- December 12, 2008 at 4:29 am
Wins in the ufc are too important and hard to come by to find another way to finish if someone doesn't tap. There's always that chance that the guy could pull some fluke submission or ko to pull the upset. If I were fighting in the ufc and I got a submission locked in on an opponent I wouldn't take any chances. If an injury happens oh well that's part of the sport, but at least show some compassion in some way for your opponent. If he had just said something like "I hope he's ok" either before or after his comments I wouldn't think it was a big deal. I just think he showed no concern whatsoever for his opponent's safety.
Skidmark Draws- December 11, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Why are people so shocked that Corey hill broke his leg?! He's 6'4 155!! It's the same reason why those faggot skinny little skaters break their shit all the time. When you're a tooth pick your gonna get broken and thrown away. He needs to do some damn squats and move up to welterweight or middleweight. Eat a damn sandwich or somethin. . ..
Anonymous- December 11, 2008 at 5:58 pm
"Cantwell popped Al-Hassans arm because he didn't tap. Thats what happens in an armbar. He DID need to snap it, that's exactly the point of an armbar. It's Hassans responsibility to tap" -

OK, he didn't have to break it. The purpose of an armbar may indeed mean to break or dislocate a persons arm but in the fight game, if you as a fighter feel that your opponent is not being responsible to himself then you have to find a way to make that apparent to the official. Now I'm not saying release the hold, flag down the ref and start a discussion in the middle of the fight. Shit, even BJ Penn managed to have his fight with Sherk end with a simple waving of the arms to indicate that Sherk was done!

If you intend on taking an opponent out but see that even the hold that you're applying is doing more harm then good then you should look for a way to end the fight in another manner. Yes Al-Hassan didn't tap and that was his fault, but why formulate an excuse for the necessity of a major injury to justify a stoppage? Fact is, no matter what anyone says, things do happen inside an octagon, but there isnt any reason for a person to inflict unecessary damage to an opponent. This isnt a Van Dam movie people these are professional fighters.

On a side note....anyone gloating to any degree about doing what Cantwell did deserves whatever is coming to them.

"I think you need to get a better understanding of head injuries before you go calling someone else a "fucking retard".

I really don't see a difference in what Cantwell did or what Gonzoga did after KO'ing Cro Cop. "'
I'm only guessing on this, but I bet the next day Cro Cop was fine and didn't have to spend the next few weeks or months rehabilitating.

That was me.. in fact all of the anonymous on the first page are me except for the last one before I started using this name.

Ok I lost my temper and didn't need to resort to name calling, sorry for that. I'm just saying... i've been punched kicked hit ect. in the head a shitload of times and if I had the choice I'd pick letting someone punch me and ko me over breaking my arm. Maybe I just have a harder head than most I don't know.

Oh and jay smith there's no need to compliment me on my name... I stole it from one of the first posts on this article lol

MMA is always fighting its image of being a ruthless no skill sport and I think having its fighters say things like "I have been waiting to do that" is just ammo for the haters. If you want to be a champ then act like one. You want to be a meathead then there are thousands of bars you can walk into and act like one. MMA is a business 1st, sport 2nd, and your personal "After school" battle ground 3rd.

"If you don't see the difference between a knockout and severe tendon/ligament/bone damage then you sir are a fucking retard. The difference.. one results in a headache and a bruised ego but then it's back to training and normal life a few days later.. the other ends in months of rehabilitation and healing and being unable to train or even go about normal daily life like one normaly would. So Ouch that hurts you are dumbshit... end of story."

I think you need to get a better understanding of head injuries before you go calling someone else a "fucking retard".

I really don't see a difference in what Cantwell did or what Gonzoga did after KO'ing Cro Cop.

Cantwell acted like a freakin jerk. He was given a sacrficial lamb for his first UFC fight. Wait till he fights a top level 205'er
Martin- December 11, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I've never fought an mma match but I watched his other hand waiting for that retard to tap. Even I knew it was going to break. Go Cantwell!
Jay Smith- December 11, 2008 at 1:22 pm
@ Clozer
You didn't burst my bubble dumb ass. I mispelled the guys name. If you were smart enough to figure out that there is only 1 letter difference in their names, maybe it would have stopped you from insulting someone for no reason, but seeing how your mama is the one that is a "piece of shit", she probably didn't raise you right.
Jay Smith- December 11, 2008 at 1:17 pm
@ B
You know what I meant. Sorry for the mispelled words teacher. Any comments on anything that I typed correctly???

@ anonymous
I'll leave sucking him off to the people affraid to say who they are on here, and use aliases like anonymous. You sound pretty Intelligent though, your doucheness.

@ armfarmer (love the name by the way)
I don't disagree with you at all. I also think he had ample time to compose himself. The guy is young in age and also young in the sport. I don't think this is something he would repeat. Regardless how any of us may feel about him, you have to be excited for the sport, and for the UFC in particular about this guys potential to be a force in the LHW division (if he can learn to win more honorably).
greenseed- December 11, 2008 at 12:40 pm
oh and OMFG at corey hills leg!!! that was so so soooo brutal
*shudder*
johnnynormal- December 11, 2008 at 12:32 pm
The only thing I can think of in Cantwell's defense is that his adrenaline was probably through the roof after feeling a man's arm snap in his grasp, and he spoke what he was feeling, pure exhiliration. I was just watching the thing and my heart was pounding out of my chest. That's was a shit thing to say, hopefully he will make a public statement denouncing his idiocy, if not, then I will agree he is a shit-stain, classless horrible human being.
greenseed- December 11, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Cantwell is the shit.....7-1... 22 years old... all wins by (t)ko or sub..all but 2 in first rnd....give the guy a break for his comments.. buncha whiners
armfarmer- December 11, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I think all you internet haters should throw yourselves at him and so he can hate on you

and what the fuck is that suppose to mean?
armfarmer- December 11, 2008 at 12:23 pm
"I've been waiting so long to do that.. you have no idea"

That sentence throws your entire "adrenaline rush/caught up in the moment" bullshit excuse out the window. He is an asshole bottom line. Maybe that appeals to some fans and if you want to support him more power to you, but I will not and I look forward to the day he gets the boot. I will never support someone that waits and waits and looks forward to the day they can brake another person's arm who they don't have any personal beef with and are only fighting for sport and competition.
Richard Wad- December 11, 2008 at 12:21 pm
After snapping a guy's arm who, for the longest time wouldn't tap...and having an adrenaline rush and doing an interview...Cantwell is justified and I think all you internet haters should throw yourselves at him and so he can hate on you...self-righteous wannabe Saints.
