Kimbo Slice’s TUF Finale Opponent May Be MMA’s Worst Kept Secret

(‘Look dog, I spent five hours baking this loaf of bread. Now you eatin’ it one way or another.’)

Spike TV and the UFC are still trying to play it close to the vest when it comes to who Kimbo Slice will be facing in his official Octagon debut at next weekend’s “Ultimate Fighter” finale. Too bad they’re the only ones concerned with keeping it under wraps. Slice already removed the element of surprise somewhat with a recent Twitter posting, but in an appearance on the “Todd N Tyler” radio show (via Bloody Elbow), Houston Alexander said several times that he’ll be taking on someone named Kevin Ferguson at the event. The hosts of the show naturally follow this statement up with a bunch of lame puns about Kimbo’s name, because they’re radio hosts and a certain number of lame puns per hour is required by their contracts.

In addition to telling us that he is the undisclosed first UFC opponent for Ferg, Alexander also insists that he’s “practicing boxing, takedown defense, it’s just crazy.” Man, that is crazy. It’s almost like he’s preparing for a fight with both stand-up and ground aspects. Though, Mr. Alexander, allow us to make a suggestion: kick him in the leg. Over and over again. The TUF editors have basically begged you to.

@ OBI,

What sport is it exactly that you compare MMA to in the ideal?
Meaning, which mainstream sport is actually in your opinion run like a sport and not a business?

MMA was never run like a sport. It has always been a business, and I await the comparison so that I may finally learn what a "Sport" is run like mainstream. I dont think I have ever seen one.

Kimbo's worst opponent is a greasy piece of fried chicken! We all know he would lose to a piece of poultry...that poor bird!

That's me in the pic with Kimbo.

Oddly, this is what actually happens when you yell "Bitch, make me a damn sandwich" at Kimbo. He actually makes you one.

I use to hate on Kimbo , thought he was an ignorant porch monkey with nothing but mouth, but I have learned he has a smart side, and a funny side, and I have decided that I actually like Kevin Ferguson.
You should look up some of his high school football highlights, he was a very athletic kid with great skills. I wish Kimbo great success and I hope after the show he trains non stop in a "jits" school with a master who wont let him go till he is a black belt, THEN I want to see the real KIMBO fight. Everyone better get their wins in now while they can.

Lol @ "someone named Kevin Ferguson ".

Unfortunately for someone named Kevin Fergeson, if his chin and agility is really as bad as it looked in the someone named Seth Pertezulli fight, then he's a ready made foil to fall victim to someone named Houston Alexanders full power blitzkrieg technique.

Hey Kimbo, can you come over here and "Slice" this loaf of bread for me.
"No problem dawg, Kimbo Slice has got this covered, ya know what I'm sayin?"
king steve- November 24, 2009 at 12:48 pm
he's the new tank abbott. he has absolutely no business in a cage going up against seasoned fighters with actual martial arts backgrounds, but it's entertaining to watch how the common(very large black man) will go(get his ass kicked OR, why not, knock the crap out of somebody).

"If anything, it could be argued that a lot of UFC fighters are making less money because of the UFCs new rules on pre-approved sponsorship fees. These fighters are getting whallopped in the pocket by losing valuable sponsorship money thanks to the UFCs draconian rules."

mike brown and his WEC buddies just went: "uhhhhhhh"

Sorry man, I was reading up on the purse...and I was under the impression that the fighters took home some of the gate. I don't know a ton about the money aspect of it, and I guess it was wrong to assume, heh.

I figured Kimbo = more $ per card = more $ for each fighter. Which by what you are saying isn't the case.

I suppose in the long would be that Kimbo will just be a flash in the pan. Just can't see him having a long career Couture, Coleman or even Ortiz-style.

Like you said, you certainly have to take your licks before you have a long term career...and those need to come from the cage, not the internet.

Based on what you say...I need to read up a bit more on the pay system :)

Let me set the record straight: I'm not a Kimbo hater. I actually think he's pretty damn entertaining and I've seen all of his fights. I've been front-and-center live for all of his EliteXC appearances.

I will say that he needs to hit the mat and learn some BJJ ASAP. It's MMA, not just throwing bombs from a standing position.

Kimbo may bring more people and money to the sport, but as far as the UFC goes, that money doesn't appear to be finding its way into the pockets of the fighters.

If anything, it could be argued that a lot of UFC fighters are making less money because of the UFCs new rules on pre-approved sponsorship fees. These fighters are getting whallopped in the pocket by losing valuable sponsorship money thanks to the UFCs draconian rules.

I'm all for more money and fans in the sport. If Slice brings 'em, that's great. But undrestand that it's the UFC, and not the individual fighters that are prosperring off of Kimbo.
mizzo- November 24, 2009 at 11:48 am

I see what you are saying about Kimbo's "treatment". But I'm HOPING some of the fighters see it as a good thing.

Don't freak out yet! I mean, in that Kimbo is a name...bringing in people to fights. The more money the draw...the more money they take home.

It's gunna be two different kinds of respect:

Kenny - That guy has worked hard and is a student of the sport. It's good to have guys like that around.

Kimbo - That guy is a brand name from the internet that brings a lot of money with him. It's good to have guys like that around.

I will say this tho. Let's say something amazing happens and Kimbo goes like 4 straight. If they put him up against Brock for the ultimate "dream" would be such a one sided slaughter Brock would be arrested for a hate crime afterward.

The image is from Kimbo's saying of "Gotta get my bread". (paraphrasing)

Also, is it just me, or does it really irk you that after uncerimoniously dumping Houston, the UFC drags Alexander back for a tailor-made fight with Kimbo?

Houston can punch. That's for sure. But if this is a blatant case of someone USING someone else, I don't know what. But hey, A Houstons gotta eat, right?

What have the other UFC fighters gotta be thinking about the kid-gloves, celebrity treatment for Slice?

What is Brock thinkin'? Dana threw him up against Mir in his first fight.

You got guys like Ken-Flo who bust their buns, fight whoever the UFC puts in front of them while they sit on their hands for months on end to get the title shot that they deserve. They certainly don't get this kinda treatment.

Lately, it just seems to me that the UFC is being run more like a business than a sport.
MMAMoneyLine- November 24, 2009 at 11:09 am
Alexander is an absolute tailor-made opponent for Kimbo. If Kimbo can't pull off a W, you have to wonder what happens next. If he can't beat Houston, he's not going to be able to beat any other LHW or HW.
NomadRip- November 24, 2009 at 11:07 am
I'm still trying to figure out the sammich picture.
fACE7biter- November 24, 2009 at 10:54 am
Wow, Houston Alexander has got stand up, but if he ends up the ground, he's got something for you there too! It's like he's taking aspects from different martial arts, and mixing them together!

Anywho, that dummy should make short work of Slice, and then we can stop with this whole Kimbo experiment. Not that they'll release him. No, they'll give him the maximum three fights in a row to lose before he's gone. My guess is Mustapa Al Turk will be his next fight. That guy is the certified jobber of the heavyweight division.
Defender- November 24, 2009 at 10:53 am
Being a slow day at the office...I was checking out some of Kimbo's YouTube fights. Why has he not thrown a single punch like those in any of his cage fights?

I know it's different...street fights you just punch until one falls down. But that guy can obviously hit hard.

Houston can too I suppose. So I'm hoping Kimbo is actually able to t-off on Alexanders face and get a highlight reel style KO.

Well, the start to a highlight reel as it were...
