MMA Fighter Challenges People to Punch Him in the Face, Everyone Fails

Knockout of the Day: Justin Buchholz Snoozes Steve Lopez Via Front-Kick

(Props: SuperiorCageCombat)

Two Saturdays ago at Superior Cage Combat 1 in Las Vegas, lightweight UFC veteran Justin Buchholz became the third person since February to score a front-kick knockout in an MMA fight, which came in the closing minute of his headlining bout against Steve Lopez. In a bizarre and tragic coincidence, Lopez happens to be a member of the Xtreme Couture camp, just like Randy Couture and Vitor Belfort, who previously fell victim to the suddenly-hip technique in the UFC. Damn, those guys have to be spooked right now.

2011: Year of the Front Kick. Don’t try to fight it.

@P2...I'm not advocating fancy kicks per say, but well delivered basic kicks, side thrust, spin heel, double round, etc. These are pretty basic, but they do take several years of practice to make effective. You've got to have the strength and flexibility to make them work, and it's pretty obvious a bunch of MMA guys, particularly ex wrestlers, just don't have clue about this. Gawd, just wade straight in with that MMA stance and you will get pasted by a front kick. There is a reason for a side stance, or modified side stance. Seagal noticed that, and laid a good technique in there for his buddies. I give him credit for that.

I see this kick being banned here shortly. Only a matter of time before someone gets kicked in the throat on accident or has severe enough nasal cavity damage that could, if all the stars align correctly, lead to death.

Imagine a guy with very powerful legs/kicks, is off mark by just a few inches. A fighter could have a collapsed trachea...belfort, couture and this guy were all caught pretty much with their thumbs up there butts, no defense what so ever...or even a very powerful blow directly to the nose, even upwards no less. Someone with enough power could not only destroy the nasal cavity, but shatter the bone, cartilage...whatever. Just like van damme did to tiger tong po in kickboxer! :P

Not very likely, but if billy mays can bump his head on a plane...go home fine but complain of a head ache before bed...then die overnight, it could happen.

Soon, every MMA fight will be reduced to who can throw this kick first.

@ChopSuey v 2.0- Just goes to show you that simple is sometimes better. People are getting knocked out while trying to throw flying knees, and everyone and their mother will throw at least one spinning strike in three rounds (trying to build a highlight reel.) I'm sure there are plenty of amazing and flashy Muay Thai kicks these "MMA guys" could throw...but they would probably end up in a takedown.

i dont think ill ever getting tired of the front kick KO.

Interesting how well some of these beginner Karate moves work when they are actually used in the Octagon. Karate kicking technique used by most (but not all) MMA guys is pretty pathetic. Good Lawd, there is more to kicking than the laziest form of Muay Thai round kick. Methinks some proper kicking (and kicking defense) techniques might be useful tools in the MMA bag.

^ Or just Seagull. Close enough.
Fried Taco- June 1, 2011 at 2:09 pm
It's not spelled Segal, it is Seagal. Not hard to remember, just think of Under Siege (they're at Sea) and pony tail (gal) and put them together to get Seagal.

it's kind of hard to tell whether Buchholz hits him with the sole of the foot - Like Silva and Machida did - or if the top of his foot hit the jaw, which would be more like a standing-upkick? I dunno. Obviously effective and nice KO regardless.

The front kick is the new overhand right.
DangadaDang- June 1, 2011 at 1:02 pm
Told ya'll.
NotReadyStatus- June 1, 2011 at 12:59 pm
Props to the article writer for not going for the obvious Segal reference. And only 3 in the comments so far! Much less than I expected. Well, 4 now.
LaWeapon- June 1, 2011 at 12:49 pm
Segal is going to make a fortune in royalties.
knucklesamitch- June 1, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Segal...damn it.
knucklesamitch- June 1, 2011 at 12:40 pm
Gray Maynard better watch out...Frankie Edgar is on the phone with Seagal RIGHT NOW.
Fried Taco- June 1, 2011 at 12:37 pm
@BONGTAR - Maybe Seagal has a vendetta against Xtreme Couture and trains anyone fighting against them.
Fried Taco- June 1, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Who would've guessed the olive-skinned guy was named Buchholz and the pale-white guy named Lopez.
BONGTAR- June 1, 2011 at 12:32 pm
How many guys does Segal train? Jeez.
