@P2…I’m not advocating fancy kicks per say, but well delivered basic kicks, side thrust, spin heel, double round, etc. These are pretty basic, but they do take several years of practice to make effective. You’ve got to have the strength and flexibility to make them work, and it’s pretty obvious a bunch of MMA guys, particularly ex wrestlers, just don’t have clue about this. Gawd, just wade straight in with that MMA stance and you will get pasted by a front kick. There is a reason for a side stance, or modified side stance. Seagal noticed that, and laid a good technique in there for his buddies. I give him credit for that.

I see this kick being banned here shortly. Only a matter of time before someone gets kicked in the throat on accident or has severe enough nasal cavity damage that could, if all the stars align correctly, lead to death.

Imagine a guy with very powerful legs/kicks, is off mark by just a few inches. A fighter could have a collapsed trachea…belfort, couture and this guy were all caught pretty much with their thumbs up there butts, no defense what so ever…or even a very powerful blow directly to the nose, even upwards no less. Someone with enough power could not only destroy the nasal cavity, but shatter the bone, cartilage…whatever. Just like van damme did to tiger tong po in kickboxer!

@ChopSuey v 2.0- Just goes to show you that simple is sometimes better. People are getting knocked out while trying to throw flying knees, and everyone and their mother will throw at least one spinning strike in three rounds (trying to build a highlight reel.) I’m sure there are plenty of amazing and flashy Muay Thai kicks these “MMA guys” could throw…but they would probably end up in a takedown.

Interesting how well some of these beginner Karate moves work when they are actually used in the Octagon. Karate kicking technique used by most (but not all) MMA guys is pretty pathetic. Good Lawd, there is more to kicking than the laziest form of Muay Thai round kick. Methinks some proper kicking (and kicking defense) techniques might be useful tools in the MMA bag.

it’s kind of hard to tell whether Buchholz hits him with the sole of the foot – Like Silva and Machida did – or if the top of his foot hit the jaw, which would be more like a standing-upkick? I dunno. Obviously effective and nice KO regardless.
