‘Layzie the Savage’ May File Charges Against Jason Miller After Gym Confrontation

(Props: TheRyanLoco. Things begins to go south at the 2:06 mark.)

Just as UFC color-man Joe Rogan recently landed in hot water over which words he shouldn’t use in public, Strikeforce/MTV star Jason Miller may be getting a costly lesson in who he may and may not put his hands on. Miller was at Kings MMA on Saturday to receive his jiu-jitsu black belt from Rafael Cordeiro, when he spotted our friend (and noted 209 supporter) Michael "Layzie the Savage" Mardones.

Seemingly without provocation — unless you count previous online trash talk — Miller slapped Layzie’s hat off, then rudely shoved him out the door. Later, Miller cooled down enough to allow Layzie back in the building, where he lectured him about Nick Diaz‘s bitchassness. The afternoon proceeded as planned, but things didn’t end there. Apparently, Mardones is considering pressing assault charges against Miller due to their physical altercation. As he explained on the UG:

First of all, I want everyone to know that I did NOT go to the gym that day to try and troll Mayhem. This was not the case at all…I had spoken to Rafael Cordeiro the night before and was invited to come film the opening of his new gym. I planned on shooting a 30 second commercial for him, as a token of my appreciation for what he’s done for me. Which has included allowing me to film inside his camp (which also has included Miller on numerous occasions and there was never any beef)

I honestly was under the impression that it was all jokes and fun when it came to talking about Nick Diaz to Jason Miller, because I had done so on occasions before hand, on and off camera. (While filming for Jason Ellis and Kings MMA) This is also the reason I was laughing when Miller came up to me, because I thought we were going to bust each others balls about the twitter exchange we had a couple days ago about making 178 and getting on the Dolce Diet. (Good work by the way Mike, Thiago looked great)

Next thing I know, Miller slaps me on the back of the head, starts shoving me towards the door, and is telling me to get the fuck out of the gym. I couldn’t believe what was happening and was in shock that he would treat the media that way…I quickly realized that shit got real when we got by the door and things got a little more hairy. (Which of course was edited out of the video)

All I could really say or do, was tell him to, "Chill out, and let’s go talk one on one." But he wanted nothing to do with talking to me when his cameras weren’t rolling and we weren’t surrounded by all his friends and the media. Just like Miller, to try and steal the spot light from someone else and put it on yourself.

Jason was there because Rafael Cordeiro was presenting you with his black belt. You should of felt honored, and that should of been the only thing on your mind, and out of respect, should of been the only thing you were focused on. Not me, not Diaz. Instead, you wanted to cause a scene to try and bait Nick into taking the fight. In the video, you can even hear someone say, "This is Cordeiro’s Moment." Yet, Miller couldn’t let it go, because it’s all about "Mayhem"

I don’t speak on behalf of Nick, nor am I his manager, so what the fuck are you asking ME these questions about for? You had the chance to ask Nick yourself… backstage at Strikeforce in San Jose… but you didn’t… (Wish someone would post THAT footage) Truth is, all Miller wanted to do was bully me once his cameras were cued up, so that he could make another video campaign to fight Nick. (Good luck with that by the way.)

You should try EARNING the fight with Diaz (or any other legitimate fighter for that reason) This ain’t MTV, "homie." The only person in need of a bully beat down, is you. You fucked up by putting your hands on me. I’m not your ex girlfriend, bro… and you’re not going to get away with that shit.

Though some observers are dismissing the altercation as a set-up viral stunt to hype the Miller/Diaz rivalry, the reaction to Layzie’s lawsuit-threat has been overwhelmingly negative so far. Here’s one representative comment from UGer ‘uniquetechnique’ that I thought was worth sharing:

"Hey…Its part of the JOB. Your a Videographer and Hands are going to be put on you. If you had some physical damage…thats a different story. Welcome to the Media world. In all seriousness…If you are suing….pull back. KARMA is far worst than having a couple thousand bucks in your pocket from this. MAN UP!HOMIE!"

Whether or not you think an assault charge is warranted in this case, let me make one thing clear: Getting roughed up by fighters is absolutely not "part of the job" for any member of the MMA media, just as it wouldn’t be in any other sport. Miller should know better than to physically engage any of his critics, since any court of law would be biased against the professional fighter in a scuffle with a civilian cameraman — especially since Layzie wasn’t threatening him in any way. We’ll keep you updated if charges are officially filed…

From the very end of Layzie's post:

No one is pressing charges or suing anyone.
That's definitely not what's going to happen.
We'll hear from Mayhem shortly.

@ 831 Father are you sure? I'm pretty sure its ironing....homer simpson agrees.

As the article writer above said, "Miller should know better than to physically engage any of his critics." That's just part of growing up and wanting to avoid unpleasant conversations with the cops, especially when you're a pro fighter in a sport that's still not entirely accepted by society.

But at the same time, while this guy is really just a cameraman and not a reporter, anyone who is involved in the MMA business in any media-type capacity should also know better than to shit-talk the very people who your job will likely bring you into direct in-person contact with. At the very least it could cost you access to people/places due to burned bridges. Not to mention that pro fighters just fucking MIGHT be the type of folk who are inclined to air grievances via physical confrontations.
Gladheateher- December 13, 2010 at 6:39 pm
Why is he asking me, Im not Nick Diaz?
Hes asking you b/c youre there, you support the Diaz Boys and Youre "Diaz's homie"

Be real and speak what you think, dont hide behind the fucking camera when the questions get tough. You know why you ducked the question Lazie, because you didnt want to agree with the world on the "I'll fight at 185" issue.

Show us the footage on this "assault" in one breathe you say you dont wanna air like youre doing it out of respect, then the next thing you do is release a statement with your hearsay version of what he did. This is the internet. Pics or it didnt happen. GTFO

If I would've started a street fight in a dojo on the day of belt ceremony my coach probably would have beaten me death with the black belt right after telling me I didn't deserve it for being a complete douchebag. But I guess YMCA jits must have different standards.
ghostboner- December 13, 2010 at 5:03 pm
I was gonna make a jake Shielzzz joke but...

Lazy the Savage is such a bitch that he tries to press charges for getting slapped... Wait, does that count as a joke? Ok ok here we go...

Layzie the Savage is such a bitch that when he is on his period even Nick Diaz doesn't want to be around hiim.

Layzie the Savage is such a bitch that the Macho man Randy Savage is suing him to make him change his name.

Layzie the Savage is such a bitch that he got invited to guest host The View.
RearNakedSpoon- December 13, 2010 at 4:12 pm

I like Viva's idea about using Bully Beatdown to get Diaz into a cage with Mayhem.
MoTropolis- December 13, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Layzie was assaulted about as much as Miller was "jumped". I cant believe it's people tied so closely to MMA that are throwing around these words to describe these dumb little confrontations. I've seen people get "jumped" before, and it doesnt happen on national television, in a sports arena, surrounded by thousands of people. That whole debacle was nothing more than a big pushing match where MAYBE somebody caught a glancing shot or two. There were waaaay too many people in that cage, and way too much commotion going on for anyone to say that they were jumped. Miller is a bitch who is doing anything he can to stay relevant because nobody is interested in him or takes him seriously as a fighter any more. I dont blame him completely tho, the kid clearly has some ADHD issues or some form of tourettes.
fightfan- December 13, 2010 at 3:39 pm
Sorry if this was repeated. I did not read all of the quote from the troll.

But, if he presses charges on Miller for kicking him out and embarassing him..then he is indeed the biggest bitch of "209"
PortlandMMA- December 13, 2010 at 12:32 pm
I don't think Mayhem assaulted him, but what he did was definitely uncalled for and douchey to the umpteenth degree. All fighters (but especially mainstream ones with television shows with "bully" in the title) have to understand this kind of conduct is fucking ridiculous.

I love all these guys who say because he talked shit on the internet he deserved that...newsflash we talk shit about these guys all fucking day on the internet, would you back up your statement in that person's gym? I for one, admittedly wouldn't even talk shit to Scott Blevins in real life, but I wouldn't hesitate to online. Also, saying that people involved in MMA media should expect this stuff is fucking dumb. If we want MMA to evolve to a level where mainstream American's are somewhat educated (which would lead to things like allowing MMA in New York, and hopefully ending baseless "dog fighting" claims) then the media is going to be a huge part of that and they need to be protected in the same way any other sport protects their media.

Seriously how do guys like Mayhem and Rampage have fans?
agentsmith- December 13, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Koeikan gets it.
Almost North- December 13, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Can we get a CP ban on Mayhem stories that don't involve any MMA fighting?

I will literally contribute money out of my own pocket to make this happen.
ctownhood- December 13, 2010 at 11:57 am

Layzie was totally right on a couple points, including maybe fighting some legitimate contenders so Nick will actually take the fight?

So, when Nick Diaz fought Sakurai in DREAM, was that to move up the rankings? And if not, maybe they can do the fight in there's no title or ranking implications. I like both guys, but Nick is ducking the fight.
831 Father- December 13, 2010 at 11:38 am
Dagnut, it's "irony". It doesn't even sound the same as "ironing". One of my pet peeves of the internet.
Clyde- December 13, 2010 at 11:37 am
Settling this in bully beatdown made sense for a minute until I realised that Diaz would have to try and submit Miller multiple times in 5 minutes and KO him in another 5 with Miller having headgear on and Diaz without.

I know people are trying to say Miller is a bitch for wanting Diaz to move up in weight, but Diaz threw the first punch. I think Miller has a right to fight him one on one without the element of surprise or 3 of his 209 homies joining in.

Whole things been blown out of proportion by the sounds of it though. If you've been genuinely hurt, I wouldn't have a problem, but if it's just someone losing their temper and having a bit of a shoving match, then just move on. I know you shouldn't have to accept it, but aren't there enough bullshit issues clogging up the courts?
Koeikan- December 13, 2010 at 11:10 am
Well, I like his videos/work, but Layzie is such a bitch.

First he gets real quiet around Mayhem, then waits a day, and then gives his retort and talks shit online for his comeback.

1) Talks shit about Mayhem online.
2) Sees Mayhem in person, surprised Mayhem isn't pleased to see him.
3) Gets ushered out of the area, by by the guy he's been talking shit about (assaulted?? LOL).
3) Gets real quiet around Mayhem, doesn't stand up for himself in any way on any level.
4) Waits a day, writes his comeback on the UG, talks some more shit.
5) Threatens lawsuit.
6) Bitches out after court of public opinion settles.

Yeah, way to rep the 209... I think the only way he could have been more of a bitch was if he pissed himself repeatedly when talking to Mayhem in person.
jimbonics- December 13, 2010 at 11:06 am
Layzie the Savage and MMA JayT might very well be the same person.
jimbonics- December 13, 2010 at 11:02 am
To all you aspiring MMA Journalists:

'should of' doesn't exist. It's 'should have'. The reason you think 'should of' is because of the slang contraction of 'should have'; should've. Please update your skill set. This is partly why you get shoved out of doors.

Grammar Nazi Out
Chael Sonnens Balls- December 13, 2010 at 10:54 am
I'm a huge fan of Mayhem and he follows his moniker.

Savage LOL come on
Merlin- December 13, 2010 at 10:37 am
It sounds like a case of Mangina is breaking out!

And CP please don't catch lessticals even if he is "your friend" ...
nickyroose- December 13, 2010 at 9:59 am
Hey man I like Diaz but I would tell him to get the fight at a catch-weight because I think this beef turning into nothing hurts his aura of area badass. If he felt like doing anything then he's a retard. I'm not afraid to say my opinion to anyone in real life. If he pushed me I would let it go. If he hospitalized I would sue the shit out of him. Simple enough.

Not everyone who likes Miller is a "nuthugging mtv fanboy". I am also not an internet tough guy, and frankly couldn't give a shit less about your Amateur career, it gives you no special insight and certainly does not make you any more intelligent than anyone else.
DazedNConfused- December 13, 2010 at 9:56 am
"This is also the reason I was laughing when Miller came up to me, because I thought we were going to bust each others balls about the twitter exchange we had a couple days ago about making 178 and getting on the Dolce Diet"

Yeah sorta, but ONLY after Miller began walking up to him. Either way fuck it, I'm tired of this drama over nothing. I'd like some actual Strikeforce fights for 2011. All I hear from them is a load of bullshit from fighters and promises from the actually company heads.
doowm- December 13, 2010 at 9:47 am
according to layzie himself: "I thought we were going to bust each others balls over our twitter exchange" (or something close to that)
so this guy knew when he seen mayhem there would be drama......and that's what he got!
nickyroose- December 13, 2010 at 9:45 am
Also, filing charges is not "Savage"
nickyroose- December 13, 2010 at 9:44 am
As a law-talking guy I can tell you the case is one of simple battery. Not, assualt, ASSAULT, ass-ault, or any other bullshit. A harmful or offensive touching. Now whether or not Lazy the "Savage" had permission to film the ceremony and Mayhem in particular, is another story. If he did not, Mayhem used reasonable force to protect his likeness.

However as a long time MMA fan I feel you can't do this kind of shit and Jason will apologize. I don't train MMA. And although I was a wrestler and have some boxing and jiu-jitsu training I am not a keyboard warrior. I use my real name. I think Lazy the Savage is a retard. He readily admits to running his mouth at Miller and apparently makes love letter videos to the 209. Which in my humble opinion is a shit-hole. I like the Diaz brothers but the Jake Shields thing was horseshit. Jumping people is horseshit.

This is all speculation anyway. We don't know if that guy had any right to be there. I for one am not taking his word for it.
