At Least Wes Sims Is Entertaining Outside of the Cage

(Skip to the 0:21 mark to see Ariel Helwani having a near-death experience at the hands of Wes Sims.)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that Wes Sims would claim his loss to Bobby Lashley at last night’s Strikeforce event was the result of an incompetent referee and an unscrupulous opponent. I guess I also shouldn’t be surprised that he showed up to fight looking like he might be five months pregnant, or that he claims to think that the fight was stopped too early. But the fact that he could say, with a straight face, that Lashley didn’t do anything but take him down and lay on him, that seems absurd even for Sims. As anyone who actually watched the fight knows, it was Lashley doing most of the work on the mat while Sims was, in Mauro Ranallo’s words, “holding on for dear life but not defending himself intelligently.”

If you go back and watch the video, just after the two-minute mark you can clearly hear the referee warning Lashley about the thumb to the throat several times, so maybe Sims has a legitimate gripe there. Did it change the outcome of the fight? Based on the fact that Sims’ game plan seemed to consist of a test of strength followed by a lot of pained facial expressions, I’m going to go ahead and say no.

Check out Lashley’s bemused response to all this nonsense after the jump.

I think Sims should just get into pro wrestling. He has charisma, he has an idea how to "hurt" people, and he's just plain fucking funny.

Wes Sims was born in the back seat of a Chrysler in the middle of a Demolition Derby... The baby will be fine

^^Come on now, we all know that Sims wasn't born in the back seat. His mom was DRIVING. yeah Wes Sims is almost better suited to something like professional wrasslin'. Too bad about the chokes in the fight, but its definitely not the reason that he lost. I just hope they give Lashley a decent opponent, and the same goes for Walker. I thought Nagy was going to be a little better than THAT. Two squash matches on one card is pushing it pretty hard Strikeforce.

Bobby Lashley has officially won me over. When he first arrived on the scene I doubted him completely. Sure, he takes a lot of criticism for being fed opponents, but I have to agree with him that if you look at most peoples 5th fight, it's not a top 10 fighter (Lesnar the exception). In my opinion, his performance last night should afford him more respect among fans. Not only did he completely dominate Wes Sims, but he was humble and professional in his victory. I have to agree with him - either let him build as a fighter or give him the title shot so he can prove himself. He takes a lot of heat from the fans because of his wrestling roots, but he has clearly demonstrated that he can dominate his opponents. I think the best test for him would be Brett Rogers. If Bobby Lashley can get past Brett Rogers, then he'll silence most of the haters out there.

Watching the Ultimate Fighter this year has lead me to not trust, or believe anything Wes Simms argues over. Last night I bought the Showtime All Access on the Strikeforce fight, on this I was able to switch to different cameras and I happened to switch to the CageCam(which is the ref) during the Simms and Lashley fight. Having audio and everything, you clearly hear Simms yelling about the thumbs, as well as the ref yelling at Lashley. While Simms was getting mounted and pounded and I started sincerely feeling bad because I believe he got a little robbed. Lashley repeatedly choked with his thumb and the ref couldn't do anything about it unless he stopped it for a moment. Another moment i noticed was when Simms turned to his back, Lashley repeatedly punched him in the back of the head, during the whole beating you here the ref clearly telling him not to, but in the end some reason gave him the victory. I understand that Wes was getting his ass handed to him in the first place, but he can take way more damage and they simply didn't give him a chance.

This match was like when my two 6 YR olds go at it......they both suck but they both think they won...even if one thinks it would have showed if mom didn't step in to pull his ear.... This was a joke of a match

Did Wes Sims just cut a promo in that interview? Him and Lashley should switch. Lashley vs Rogers would be a good fight.

lashley is good people, but he should not be fighting tomato cans anymore; especially if he wants the paydays!! he says to compare himself to others who have had only a handful of fights and to that i respond with only two words. cain velasquez!! wasn't his 6th or 7th fight against cheick congo?

^^Lesnar fought Frank Mir, Heath Herring, and Randy Couture, and then Mir again in his 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th fights respectively. So Lashley's argument is fucked and I hope he loses his next fight BADLY.

@robthom - dude, Wes Sims is white. But you are right. I agree Lashley seems like a good guy, but I don't get what he means "Let me build the way I wanna build". Building would mean going up, and he isn't he is staying flat. It looks like he wants to have a huge undefeated record like Fedor or something. I don't see how continuing to fight cans is going to get him anywhere. I think he step it up and fight James Toney in April. Or Brett Rogers would be ok too I guess.

Here it is then - have Lashley fight Herring. Personally, I despise Herring as the no talent middle of the pack can that he is, but if Lashley can't beat a guy like that, it's time for him to reevaluate how good he is vs. how good he thinks he is. Sims, Schmims. I agree that pro wrasslin' is the way to go for him. He's more of an entertainer than a fighter. Sure, it's not as prestigious as being a bona fide MMA fighter, but hey - there's more money and pussy in wrestling than in living under a bridge.

I'm very borderline on saying I "like" Lashley as a fighter. His technique minus the thumb in the throat (which he only did once but was warned numerous times for) was actually ok and he did beat the guy. But......it was Wes Sims who had a beer belly to make Chuck Liddell proud. Sims did nothing but look like shit and get hit. he didn't defend himself, he didn't attack and just let himself get destroyed. You can't blame Lashley for that one. I do agree with you all that he does need to step up his level of competition and face a legitimate fighter like Arlovski or Rogers. If he could get past those guys then I think I can finally cross that line and give him my support. Till then I'm still on the fence about him and am waiting to see Wes Sims on this years "Celebrity Biggest Loser".

Its not as if he's got a future in the sport so he might as well collect his two's and fews where he can. Next up Lashly/randleman. I'm sure kevin could use a little lunch money these days.

I was really excited to see Lashley fight again, but this time i was pretty unimpressed. Maybe it was Sims height, but i really expected Lashley to run right thru him more so than he did. Maybe put Lashley against Herschel next time. They should really try to do a cross promotion with SF and UFC. You could get Brock and Fedor, Herschel and Kimbo, Mousasi and GSP for real, etc. etc. Too bad it will not happen.
