Left Kick, Cemetery: Mirko Cro Cop’s Greatest Hits

(I dare you to mock this picture.)

It’s hard to define someone like Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, a man who is perhaps the most multi-faceted, not to mention intriguing figure in MMA. Aside from his incredible list of credentials including time in both the Croatian elite Special Forces Unit and Parliament, the man has amassed a mixed martial arts and kickboxing resume that reads like a Hall of Fame list in either sport.

But come Saturday night at UFC 137, Cro Cop will simply be fighting for the right to continue his career, or maybe just to end it on his own terms. In a way, Filipovic is kind of like the Metallica of the heavyweights, with his 2006 Pride Grand Prix win being his Master of Puppets. And, like Metallica, everything since then has been well…just kind of downhill. The devastating loss to Gabriel Gonzaga was his ReLoad, the bittersweet win over Pat Barry his Death Magnetic, and the back-to-back knockout losses to Frank Mir and Brendan Schuab his Lulu. Except, unlike Lulu, those losses only felt like an hour and a half of pure shit.

But as fans of the sport, we are pulling for Cro Cop to put on a hell of a performance on October 29th. Even at the cost of our parlays, it would be awesome to see some flashes of the old “Cro Cop” in what could be the last fight of his incredible career, which Old Dad has already promised us Mirko will do.

Look at me, blabbering on like some school girl. Let’s take a look and a listen at Cro Cop’s greatest hits, “California Dreamin‘” aside.

@Meister574, are you serious? what an obvious dive.

Some good points but if you were going by record sales it would have to go to The Beatles, then maybe Elvis. Now Pink Floyd is definately a close second ( notice the Pink Floyd referance made back in an earlier post) but I am judging on a combination of record sales, amount of material or albums, longevity and how much they influenced music with there differant sounds. Truth be told though, there just my favorite band
intercept440- October 25, 2011 at 1:42 pm
well lo an behold i wasnt satified at 25 seconds of looking.. so i looked a bit more.. lastest results say that as off now rock album best seller of all time would be ac/dc/ back in black at 49 million (source wikipedia) with pink floyd at a close second, and led zeppelin trailing them..
anyways ..fuck it im done.. i think im going to cut out early and go to the bar
intercept440- October 25, 2011 at 1:36 pm
well now that we are all off topic... i feel i must chime in. on this whole rock band issue..
#1 led zeppelin is good i wouldnt say best of all time.. but there good.
#2 rolling stones in about the same category
#3 metallica isnt even in the same genre there in the metal genre
#4 pantera metal also.

#5 all have there greatness and there crap songs..
#6 metallica sucked after the black album.
all those are valid points...

but if you jumble all the shit up and spin it in a bingo tumbler.. then yea could call them collectivly rock....i guess....

Best rock band of all time though.....that a hard nut to crack...
..becuase opionions vary so much..
if you go by record sales as of 2006 it was the eagles with there greatest hits album has sold more copies than anything at 29 million.
. as of 2006 in all the 25 seconds i looked for the info.
i personally dont agree but statiscally thats what it is

. persoanlly i think pink floyd would have to be right up there at the top

Everyone knows KISS is the greatest rock band of all time...
smellypiratehooker- October 24, 2011 at 10:25 pm
and by the way. Someone who had to bring up the " best rock band of all time"( I'm looking your way mmainmyblood) it surely without doubt is The Rolling Stones. I would love you to try to objectivly argue that.
smellypiratehooker- October 24, 2011 at 10:17 pm
I don't follow any new Mettalica but when I saw lulu, I thought what you meant ( for a momentary lapse of reason ) was " The call of Ktulu" which is a rad song and was done quite well I might add by the San Francisco symphony. The good, the bad and the ugly theme kicks ass as well.

You forgot the definitive fight settling the age old argument of K1 kickboxer vs Luchador - CroCop vs Dos Caros Jr.

@Redping sorry I didnt even read your post.. but you know that kid is like 15 right he thinks Metallica is the best of all time.. its not his fault he is ignorant.. its MTV's!!!
MMAINMYBLOOD- October 24, 2011 at 7:33 pm
Casa de los pantelones, Apparently you havent heard of a band called LED ZEPPELIN!!!! Jesus man Metallica is the best metal band of all time rock band.. no way.. not even close. And yes they started to suck.. imo after the Black album.. but yeah .. listen to something that came out before 1996 and then make your assessment..I bet you will not make the same one.
Redping- October 24, 2011 at 6:39 pm
I have no idea how you could consider those unimaginative only-know-pentatonics rednecks as a 'rock band'. More like a 'carefully marketed american product' that shitheads eat up. Lars and Kirk have to be two of the most boring musicians in the history of mankind. Led Zeppelin would prefer you leave 'greatest rock band of all time' alone in your sentences in future
Casa de los pantelones- October 24, 2011 at 5:33 pm
Talking about Metallica like that will surely grant you access to a long painful hell. Comparing the greatest rock band of all time to a choke artist like cro cop is blasphemy.
edhedicus- October 24, 2011 at 5:01 pm
Everyone knows that Metallica started to suck after ....and justice for all. So much like Metallica started to suck after they ran out of Dave Mustaine written music, Cro Cop started to suck after the demise of Pride.
Will ALWAYS be fun to watch!
Meister574- October 24, 2011 at 3:44 pm
And why was this not included?

Yes, a freak fight, but this demonstrates "left kick, cemetary" better than anything.

A true legend in his European man pants...
Kimbos Bread- October 24, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Win or lose, Cro Cop will always be a favorite of mine.
He's a true MMA legend. He never hid behind companies like M-1 (a la Fedor), didn't move around weight classes to stay relevant, he continued to compete in UFC to face big competition despite being over the hill. Plus, I'll never forget his prank on Mauro. Good sense of humor. This weekend, I hope he kicks the goo out of big country's gut.

Cup Cheick Kongo is hoping for a legacy like this. Nut kick, Fertility Clinic.
rngeorgeh- October 24, 2011 at 2:18 pm
Cro Cop apparently doesn't need to worry about winning, as he keeps getting fights despite his abysmal UFC performances. Just sayin'. I totally respect him as a legendary fighter based on his pre-UFC days. He just hasn't done shit since joining the UFC. I remember when Pride was in it's prime, lots of us thought their fighters could rule in the UFC; hasn't worked out for some reason.
