Liddell Still Hasn’t Spoken With the UFC About His Future With The Promotion and Is Undecided About Retirement

(Chuck demonstrating the moves that got him voted off Dancing With the Stars)

Chuck Liddell was in Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario over the weekend to help out his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu instructor, Scott Epstein in a pair of training seminars taught by his TUF 11 assistant coach in the two Canadian cities.

Although he declined our request for an interview (not sure why), he did speak with Mike Davies from the Peterborough Examiner about the crossroads he is facing in his career after his knockout loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 115 — his third KO in as many fights.

"I haven’t talked about it at all. I still don’t plan to for a little bit. I have to talk to Dana and my guys and see what I’m going to do,"
Liddell said Sunday afternoon. "It’s a lot harder decision when I thought I looked great until I got caught. I was winning the fight and winning the fight pretty good, I thought."

Had he not gotten caught by Franklin, "The Iceman" believes that he likely would have won the bout as "Ace" may well have quit between rounds due to the broken arm he incurred as a result of a Liddell kick in the opening frame.

Refuting the popular opinion that his reasoning for continuing to fight is likely because of money or a result of his desire to go out on top, or at least on a winning note, Liddell says it’s more so about going out when he is no longer to compete at a high level.

"It’s not that so much as looking at should it be my last fight? I was in great shape," he said. "I was sparring well and everything was working well. That’s where it comes into trying to figure out what I’m going to do."

Since UFC president Dana White has stated on several occasions that he has no desire in seeing Liddell incur any further damage like he has in the past couple years inside the Octagon and the fact that Liddell’s current salary is $500,000 per fight, base, even if the promotion releases him so he can continue to pursue his career under another organization’s banner, there aren’t many who would pay even half of his asking price, considering his recent performances.

When speaking about the small seminar he did last weekend in the lesser-known city of Peterborough — population 75,000 — even Liddell admits that the price attached to his name makes him an almost unaffordable commodity, possibly foreshadowing the fate of his in-limbo career.

"To be honest, my appearance fee is too high to make any sense for these guys, but I did it to hang out with Scott," said Liddell.

@ crusader even if Chucks chin isn't shot and its atleast just "Normal". It used to be straight up granite and Chuck's fighting style (takes one to give one) developed around that granite chin .Sadly it sure isn't granite any longer ;kinda like Big Nog. Plus his reaction time has slowed so... if you put him in the cage with anyone with some decent defense,speed and power (anyone in the top ten at 205) they will damage his brain further IMHO.

Please Chuck, just hang em up dude, nothing left to prove, definitely not the machine he was, go now and let us all still love you and everything you've acheived. When we mention the name Chuck Liddel we dont want to be shaking our heads and saying, "If only he got out when he should have".
Chuck, go and have a chat with Frank Shamrock, he worked it out, I suggest for your health and our memories you do the same

He could make hundreds of dollars a year coaching. Literally hundreds. Great idea.
Deathb4tapout- June 29, 2010 at 4:21 pm
I personally hope he hangs it up and continues coaching. i thought he did an awesome job with his guys on tuf. Granted Hackman was there but I still thought Chuck was a good coach.

It's no secret that Chuck is my all time favorite fighter. That being said, my testicals draw up every time they apply grease to his chin before entering the cage and when Buffer spins that card around in front of him during the 180°.

seriously? Who in the fuck are you? What, exactly have you accomplished that qualifies you to open your slack-jawed orfice on this man's crossroads ?
Other than consuming in sporadic bits and pieces the moments revealed to you through a contorted lens, you really know jack shit about Chuck, his current dillema, personal demons, or even what it takes to be an aging bad-ass in the worlds most brutal game. I aint no Chuck fan. But before you judge him as if your douchebag scented shit don't stink - perhaps you should bite your tongue just for one instant out of respect for the fact that you've never had the burden of walking in his shoes.

WHO am I? whhooooooooo? Dude I'm the cat who won't cop out when there's danger all about...
WOW, I am shocked that you can even speak normal with chucks balls in your mouth like that.
You need a new perspective...that doesn't involve Chucks beer on your flat head.
In case you live in a cave Chuck has been knocked the fuck out more times than Jenna has taken a mac truck to her vagina.
I have always liked Chuck but if he doesn't give it up he's gonna get brain damage.
Football quarterbacks retire after 3 concussions. Chuck has had more than that now, HE'S DONE FUCKTARD! get it through your head...now swallow, and walk away.

^^Mir hasn't dropped 6 of his last 7 so...
Casa de los pantelones- June 29, 2010 at 3:15 pm
I guess I have to repeat myself...Chucks only real ktfo loss was from rashad.

Rampage did zero to him, jardine just kicked his leg to death, shogun clipped him, nothing serious and franklin's was about the 2nd worst (in the sense of you knew he was out when he hit the mat)...

Frank mir got brutally dome raped by lesnar and carwin, where the thrashing in any one of those fights was way worse than what Chuck has been put through so far (with the slight exception of rashads KO) and no one is mentioning Mir should retire.

Getting one punch KO'ed is less damaging than lesnar or Carwin punching you in the head 35 times each
RwilsonR- June 29, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Get Off Me is absolutely right about Franklin's punch. Also, Chuck had a lot of momentum of his own moving him into Franklin's punch as Franklin turned his body to put more into it. All of it together made for a pretty solid blow.
RwilsonR- June 29, 2010 at 2:37 pm
@ halfbreed

Six or seven years ago that could have been a great plan for Chuck. But right now Japanese MMA is nearing death, and he couldn't make much money at all over there. They aren't drawing the crowds they used to, and most of the money is now shelled out for small Japanese guys to beat up other small Japanese guys, and no longer goes to Westerners to win mismatches. There isn't even much work for Bob Sapp over there any more. Unfortunately, it just isn't a big MMA market any longer.

@Stak40
Perception is reality, after reading your description of how the KO went down between Chuck and Fanklin I can understand you don't think it was a big shot.
Couple things though: Rich was not back peddling, his back was on the fence, he actually had forward momentum with the shot by turning his hips...go check it again and you will see exactly what I mean, it's a classic slip and counter right, as i said before the punch would not KO the majority of fighters, but it was a good shot, definitely nothing like Sho-Guns.

I agree that Wandy would serve Chuck, but I would like to see them go again just so they could even the score, Wandy has slowed down nicely himself and their first fight was fireworks galore.
RwilsonR- June 29, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Is that a picture of Chuck up there? It looks like Sinbad to me.
Pow right in the kisser- June 29, 2010 at 2:31 pm
You know I was thinking about what you said Harry.... and I guess you are so close to Chuckie that you are practically hugging his nuts.
Kid Clam Curtains- June 29, 2010 at 2:20 pm
Let Chuck fight a 205er not in the top 10. He's had to fight nothing but badasses in his last 6 fights. Let him smash Tito again for his final act. Then they can both retire.
Pow right in the kisser- June 29, 2010 at 2:16 pm
LOL @ Harry Sack, why the harsh comments?

from what I understand, its' all so very technical, but from from I can understand, it only happens to dumbasses who post FIRST! all the fucking time.
New dad look into that ok?

As for Chuck, here's how I feel: until he finally wakes up, and his foggy brain starts functioning properly again I'm gonna have to say chuck is a fucking dumbass. RETIRE Chuck...shut your piehole and give it up bitch your done!
the day you retire and get real is the day I start showing you the respect you earned back when you weren't a brain damaged moron.

Viva Hate- June 29, 2010 at 1:26 pm
I did Chuck a favor and wrote him up a fairwell speech, sort of. Not all of it fits but I think it could be a historic moment for MMA, sort of.

"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad chin I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in arenas for twelve years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.

Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn’t consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I’m lucky. Who wouldn’t consider it an honor to have known John Hackleman. Also, the builder of sports greatest empire, Dana White. To have spent years with that wonderful little fellow, John Lewis? Sure, I'm lucky.

When the Tito Ortiz, a man you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift — that’s something. When everybody down to the cut men and those rings girls in bikinis remember you with titles— that’s something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter — that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body — it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has worked out naked with you— that's the finest I know.

So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad chin now, but I've got an awful lot to live for. Thank you."

@Get off me

PS

No way Chuck could take a punch from Wandy!
Stak40- June 29, 2010 at 1:22 pm
@Get off me

I dont know brotha. He didnt have it cocked and it looked more like a jab. He was falling backwards so he didnt have any momentum behind it or the ability generate any power with his hips. Only half of his fist actually hit Chucks face and Franklin isnt known for his power. I believe anyone with half a jaw would probably ate it and kept on going. I could be wrong but wouldnt admit it if I was!
Get Off Me- June 29, 2010 at 1:04 pm
@crusader
The Sho-Gun knock out was sad, a looping left right on the button though, but still would not have put Chuck out 3yrs ago.
@stak40
The Franklin shot was a good one, it only looked like a short right because Chuck's chin stopped it, but it was a good shot, not a grazing shot at all. Do I think it would have KO'd the Chuck of yester year, no, but that shot is staggering anybody.

I think Chuck looked more impressive against Franklin than anybody he has fought in his last 4 fights...Dana just needs to protect him more, find oppenents like Franklin(big name) that are not really a threat at the top of the ladder, very much the same as he does for Randy Couture.... I just want Chuck to go out on a win, I think he showed he can still be taken seriously, he just needs the right opponent i.e. winner of Bonnar v. Soszynski, heck a rematch with Wandy would be right up my alley for a final fight.
