Live ‘Dog Alert: Dan Henderson Is a 2-1 Betting Underdog Against Lyoto Machida

(By the way, he’s supposed to be Danny Zuko from Grease. I’m guessing these costumes were not his idea.)

Dan Henderson fans, get your cash out. MMA Mania gives us the heads-up that Hendo is as high as a +196 underdog for his UFC 157 fight against Lyoto Machida on February 23rd. (In other words, a $100 bet on Henderson would return $196 in profit if he wins.) Considering that Henderson is coming back from a knee injury, it’s understandable that the oddsmakers don’t have complete faith in him. But considering how dangerous Henderson has looked in his last four fights — the epic war with Shogun Rua at UFC 139, and his knockouts of Fedor, Feijao, and Babalu in Strikeforce — it still feels like he’s being sold short.

Then again, you have to consider how Henderson matches up with Machida specifically. Sure, Hendo can turn your lights off with that H-Bomb if you stand in front of him, but he might have a problem with Machida’s skill at evasion and his perfectly-timed attacks from unorthodox angles. Are the odds juicy enough to warrant a bet on the old ‘dog?

In a related story, Ronda Rousey — who opened as a ridiculous -1500 favorite against Liz Carmouche — is currently sitting at a still-ridiculous -1050.

I like both of these guys but I'm pulling for Lyoto. This is one of those fights I didn't want to happen. You've got two top contenders in the LHW division and after this there'll only be one. I don't think the rest of the LHWs (Gustaffson and the rest) pose any threat to Jon Jones. At least these two guys have a snowballs chance in hell at beating him. I don't know why they made this fight? It's not like the fans were asking for it? I see it as punishment for both Dan and Lyoto for pissing off Dana. Bullshit.

I don't see henderson coming out on top here. Henderson hasn't been using his wrestling a lot lately, machida has some of the best takedown defense i've seen from a non wrestler, and hes the last guy you want face if you're relying on one big bomb to take him out. I see henderson swinging at air for 3 rounds and losing the ud.. Maybe even getting tko'd after he starts to gas.

One two punch... What in the hell are you talking about?? What does nuthugging or jake shields have to do with this fight? Are you implying that machida will lay n pray hendo?? Victimless? I am confused...
OneTwoPunch- February 8, 2013 at 9:02 pm
Yeah Machida will have nothing else to do aside from wrestling his way to victory... Jake Shields wrestled his way over Hendo so it's the only way I see Hendo going down...If Machida thinks he can stand in front of him, it will be quick work for Hendo...

I think those odds are actually pretty generous to Hendo. There is litterally nothing he does better than Lyoto except take power shots to the dome.

Which one is the trani?

Love ya' Hendo, but you're goin' down.
OneTwoPunch- February 7, 2013 at 2:38 pm
The only way I see Machida coming out victimless is by nut hugging...Jake Shields dragged his way to victory...Don't get me wrong I'm going and willing to put money towards Hendo but Shields opened my eyes to new realities...

What are the odds on Machida standing in front of Hendo for more than 2 seconds and why is that chick's face 3 shades whiter than her body?

I would not put money on the H-bomb. Lyoto is more elusive than what's his face. And Dan has lost a step or two over the years.

I'll put a fiver on red-belt.
