Click the “MORE” link and refresh the page every couple minutes to see the latest announcements and trash-talk from the EliteXC “Street Certified” conference call. Because knowing, as some say, is 50% of the battle.
3:59: Holding for an operator. And holding. And holding some more. Uh-oh. Ah, there she is.
4:00-8: The conference should begin any minute now. Aaaaaany minute.
4:11-2: Okay, we’re rolling. Johnny Beyrooty introduces the panel, and runs down EliteXC’s upcoming events, including Ken/Ryan Shamrock’s fights at CageRage and the Frank Shamrock/Cung Le fight on 3/29.
4:13: Gary Shaw takes the mic to hype the Kimbo/Tank fight. Tickets are from $35-$700. Gary lets Kimbo introduce himself. He says “What’s up.” Shaw says “That’s it?”
4:15: Tank: “I’ll tell you what’s up, Kimbo’s gonna end up on his back.”
Kimbo: “You drink a 6-pack or a 12-pack before you said something?”
Tank: “I don’t drink beer, I can afford vodka now.”
4:17: Tank is asked to tell the story behind his nickname. He was in jail for beating someone up. Not sure how that fits in. But there was a Clint Eastwood flick with a character named Tank, and it comes from that.
4:19-20: Tank: “I will give [Kimbo] his props. He’s got balls and he’s got heart, and those are the things you can’t teach…he’s a tough man…but I don’t know how polished he is.”
Kimbo: “I’m the new kid on the block, but this is that era. Being street certified mixed with MMA…when you combine that you gonna have a fighter like myself. Whatever you wanna do, I’ll do it. That’s my life. I don’t even see Tank, I’m seeing through him.”
4:22: Wow, people are talking about Tank’s experience like it’ll actually matter. Kimbo says “I look at it like a chick who does porn. Just because she’s fucked 100 dudes doesn’t mean I’m afraid to fuck her.” BOOM!
4:23: Tank is apparently writing a book. Someone asks him what he does when he’s not fighting. Tank: “Drink. I like to have as much fun as I train. I like to hang out in bars and write the book that I’m doing.”
4:25: Gary Shaw: “We wanted [Gina Carano] to be on the show. She was training for American Gladiators, and she wasn’t ready to compete…hopefully she’ll be ready for our big March 29 card in San Jose.”
4:26: Gary on Dana White: “If you fight for the UFC, you can’t be bigger than Dana White. If you fight for EliteXC, you’re bigger than Gary Shaw, you’re bigger than EliteXC. It’s all about the fighter.”
4:27: Gary on the UFC: “They don’t own MMA. They’re just a brand. As long as [their champions] don’t fight fighters in other organizations, they are just club champions. To say that the UFC has all the best fighters in the world…he is full of shit.”
4:30: I ask Tank: What’s your drink of choice? Tank says: “Who are you, CagePotato? Well that’s what I like, potato-juice. I drink vodka with a splash of cranberry.” I ask him if he’ll throw back a couple before the match, but he says something about knowing how to separate work and play. Boo. (I was also planning on having Kimbo give us a specific prediction for how the fight will end, but he’d already stated that he’s not interested in making predictions. So.)
4:34: “I’m gonna change my nickname from Kimbo to Blackhawk, because only a Blackhawk can destroy a tank.” Someone asks Kimbo about Sean Gannon. Kimbo wants the fight more than any other fight. “I’ll do that bare-knuckle. I want that fight back.” Gary Shaw would organize anything Kimbo wanted to do.
4:38: Kimbo is doing a movie called Blood and Bone. “I got my SAG card!”
4:40: Gary says a Tank Abbott/Ken Shamrock fight is a possibility. Tank requests that Ken shave his legs before that fight ever happens. “You run around and show your legs like a superstar, when all you are is a clown…he’s the kind of person that goes into a restaurant and says ‘Do you know who I am?’”
4:42: Tank just got a computer but he’s not hooked up to the Internet yet.
4:45: Gary’s talking about EliteXC’s future goals. BOOOOORING!
4:48: Gary’s asked about the Zuffa lawsuit against Couture, but he doesn’t comment on other people’s lawsuits. But he will say that EliteXC is fighter-friendly…they take care of their fighters. “We follow the Muhammand Ali law. We don’t lock any fighters into 20-year contracts. We don’t have slaves, or indentured servants…ask Forrest Griffin and Brandon Vera how we treat our fighters.” (?)
4:50: Tank walks around between 261 and 267. He’s asked what “camp” he trains with. Tank’s training with his old buddies that he’s always trained with. Uh-oh…
4:53: Gary goes over the rest of the card, calling out Antonio Silva, Charles “Crazy Horse” Bennett and others.
4:56: I ask Tank to tell us more about his book. It’s about the time he was sent to jail for 18 months for beating up a cop’s son, then got out and started fighting in the UFC. “It’s a real-life Rocky story.” And it’s over 600 pages long. Can’t wait.
4:58: Gary gives a wrap-up spiel. Kimbo: “Stay tuned and be ready to check me out on February 16.” Tank: “It’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be a long night for Kimbo and a short night for me.”
5:00: It’s over. Get back to work.
