Lyoto Machida Politely Accepts Chael Sonnen’s Weekend Call-Out [UPDATED]

UPDATE: The fight looks like it might actually happen; Fighters Only says it’s slated for UFC 136 (October 8th in Houston), while BloodyElbow says it might take place this winter.

“I don’t know what the future holds, there’s plenty of guys out there to fight. There’s a karate guy at 205 pounds, I might stop there on my way back to 185 for a tune-up fight and take out Machida, but we’ll see, we’ll see where it goes.” — Chael Sonnen to MMAFighting at UFC 132

“I think that’s great, I’m excited to do that. He’s coming back now, wants to fight, and I really think it’s a good fight for me. If Sonnen really wants this fight, I’ll sign it immediately, no problem at all.” — Lyoto Machida responding to Tatame

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Sonnen wants to ease back into the UFC as a light-heavyweight, considering he’s a gigantic son-of-a-bitch these days. Plus, Machida’s persona as a pee-drinking Brazilian Seagal-student has already given Uncle Chael a lot of material to tweet with.

As for Machida, he doesn’t really have anything better to do. “All of the potential opponents are set to fight, and I think I’ll just have to wait,” Machida told Tatame. “Rampage will fight Jon Jones, Franklin fights Minotouro, Phil Davis vs. Rashad, so I’ll have to wait for the definition of these fights to start my training focused.”

For the record, Sonnen has no interest in settling his beef with Wanderlei Silva following the Axe Murderer’s 27-second loss to Chris Leben at UFC 132. “No, it doesn’t make sense,” he told MMAFighting. “Wanderlei’s gonna have to do something else. I don’t have any interest in getting in there with him. I don’t want to be the next guy to force him to have a flashlight shined in his eyes.”

This fight actually poses alot of problems for Lyoto
In all of his fights except against Shogun and Rampage
his opponents break mentally and just let themselves lose

Chael will be in there fighting all 5 rounds(hope this is a main event)

Oddly enough, this whole thing kind of makes me want to see Seagal knock Chael out :P

Also, thank you CP for doing something about the fucking asshole spam bots. Not being inundated with fabulous handbag deals is worth the effort of filling out a reCaptcha.

I have very different plans for both of these guys!

Chael should fight Tito next. How awesome would the lead up to that fight be?
Fatty McDickbutts- July 5, 2011 at 1:35 pm
Jon Jones watch the fuck out, Uncle Chael's coming into town.

Sonnen looks like your typical thug in any Steven Segal movie.

He's going to die.
Hesh to Steel- July 5, 2011 at 11:15 am
Wow, Sonnen is looking rather gorilla-esque these days. I'd be interested to see this fight because why the hell not? Could be fun.
dim mak- July 5, 2011 at 11:04 am
if couture couldn't get machida to the ground, i don't see chael being able to do so.
joshuan29- July 5, 2011 at 11:00 am
Sonnen by Unanimous Decision. He would hit take down after take down on Lyoto and work him over for 5 rounds, provided he has learned any semblance of sub defense. I think this is a very interesting fight!
RSparrow- July 5, 2011 at 10:56 am
Good matchup, Chael would take Lyoto down with his wrestling, just a matter of time. Oh, and any one else have absolutely zero interest when the Noguiera brother's fight?

@jizzninja 100% agree. Everyone in pride juiced and we all loved it. Everyone says wandy is done but he was a machine in pride when juiced to the hilt. Now when a juice story comes out everyone acts all butt hurt. I dont care who uses either way. I just wanna see good fights.
jizzninja- July 5, 2011 at 10:17 am
trt, steroids, insanity, whatever he has or has done i dont give a shit. chael is awesome he's like the joker, he just creates chaos and is bat-shit crazy. people boo him for steroids...fuck it, all of PRIDE did them and we sill love what PRIDE was...right? and mdino youre a certified turd...dont believe his hype...dude he's the one fight of recent to say he was going to put silva through hell and he did.
knucklesamitch- July 5, 2011 at 10:09 am

I'm just saying it's possible. It's just as possible for him to do to Machida what he did to Silva as it is for Machida to do to Sonnen what he did to Couture.

I just don't think it's right/fair to assume either scenario is FAR more likely to happen than the other. To me, it's a good fight on paper and I want to see it. I'd like to think a W over Machida would also make a rematch with Silva even more entertaining/exciting/hilarious based on all the stuff Sonnen would be saying.
mDino- July 5, 2011 at 10:07 am
sonnen would get KO'd. stop believing the hype chael is setting for himself. he has no chance against machida
rampageisgod- July 5, 2011 at 9:55 am
Fail is already underestimating the power of Steven Seagal. Game over. Flip flip flip
Stak40- July 5, 2011 at 9:37 am

I hate excuses as much as the next guy but Sonnen has never been known for his striking until he wobbled Silva. Silva, we have never seen wobbled until Sonnen. Then you throw in broken ribs and whatever and then shit makes sense again.

So to say that Sonnen did it to to Silva so why not Machida I think is a little far fetched because in all honesty i don't think Sonnen could do it again to Silva. I think Silva was hurt and not his typical self. I am not saying that a healthy Silva could fend off Sonnen's take downs for five rounds but a rematch would look completely different.
knucklesamitch- July 5, 2011 at 9:26 am

I'm talking about when Shogun KO'd Machida. Everyone thinks of both Silva and Machida as very illusive, no one on this board can tell me there weren't SHOCKED when Sonnen dropped Silva and in the 1st round of that fight.

I don't see any reason why (as long as he can put hands on him), Sonnen can't drop Machida, and control him on the ground and earn the W. i'm not saying it will happen, but I don't think it's out of the question.
macreadysshack- July 5, 2011 at 9:21 am
Damn, Chael's going for broke.
Danky4twanky- July 5, 2011 at 9:14 am
You people that think lyoto lacks power are insane!!!!! You can say cumulative punches did rashad in but that's because lyoto's hands are lethal. It doesn't matter if it's one punch or three, a ko is a ko is a ko. It had enough power to teach rashad the stanky leg. Lookin like a dead fish. Oh, and he also legitimately rocked rampage in his decision loss. Anyone who watches mma knows that is impressive in itself. How do any of you think chael is even in the same league as lyoto? It's not like lyoto hasn't already beaten a number of wrestlers at a bigger weight class than chael already. Randy, Tito, rashad, thiago silva( who is also a cheater and still got finished) etc. It's cool to have your own opinion but plz base it on some logic not just who can tweet better. Chael wins tweeting hands down.
budsellers- July 5, 2011 at 9:03 am
sonnen could never knock out wand silva. wand would kick his ass.
newdeal- July 5, 2011 at 8:44 am
rashad didn't get knocked out by one shot from machida he got knocked out by cumulative damage. silva has more power for chael to be worried about than machida does.
Tardjitsu- July 5, 2011 at 8:44 am
I like how that little balled cheater Sonnen talks like he's been on a knockout spree and can clean out his division and the one above him. He must be out of his mind with that trt-roid-rage.
FrontKick Dentist- July 5, 2011 at 8:39 am
Sonnen taps out Machida by shriveled balls choke.
ccman- July 5, 2011 at 8:38 am
@ knuckle, i like both fighters and not sure who i would either root or bet on. I think the fight can go any one of numerous ways and that says who wins more than anything. I actually would have this one as even money.

Yes you are but for entertainment purpose which fight are you talking about? The one where shogun through a shit load of knees and body kicks or the one where Shogun KO Machida?
