M-1 Announces Kansas City “Breakthrough” Event, Mercilessly Bashes Don Frye

Don FryeMark Kerr
(M-1 Global initially considered putting a fake mustache on Mark Kerr and hoping that no one would notice the switch, but decided against it when they couldn't find a promotional partner to pay for half of the mustache-related expenses.)

Everyone’s favorite co-promoter M-1 Global has finally got that situation with their next event taken care of.  Though “Breakthrough” was originally scheduled to feature a fight between “King Mo” Lawal and Don Frye at the Los Angeles Convention Center, it will now feature Lawal vs. Mark Kerr at Kansas City’s Memorial Hall, according to today's press release.

M-1 puts the blame for the mix-up on “a partner in Los Angeles who backed out of certain commitments,” because naturally it couldn’t be the fault of such a distinguished worldwide promoter.  The people at M-1 are consummate professionals, which is why their response to Frye pulling out of the event is to straight up crucify him in their press release:

"Don Frye had a signed contract with M-1 and part of that signed commitment allowed us to change the venue if needed," said [M-1 COO Joost] Raimond. "From our perspective, Don should still be in this fight. However, for reasons that we aren't exactly sure of, he has backed out. Don still has not provided us with a clear reason as to why he is refusing to fight.

"We've heard rumors that he wasn't happy with the location change but our television partner, Mo Lawal, and every other fighter scheduled for the event are satisfied with Kansas City so why isn't it good enough for Don? Don also fought just a few short months ago in Lubbock, Texas. It just doesn't make sense because the old Don Frye was willing to fight anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. Perhaps the fire is gone and he underestimated the challenge that 'King Mo' presents?"

You know, I can’t understand why the UFC didn’t want to hand over half their company to these fine gentlemen.  First they fail to even apply for a promoter’s license in the state where they wanted to promote an event, then they move the event to another part of the country less than three weeks out from the show, and when one of their fighters pulls out they attack his character like a bunch of fourteen year-old girls at a slumber party talking about the chick who just left the room.

To replace Frye, M-1 signed Mark Kerr to face Lawal on August 28.  Though Kerr is currently on a four-fight losing streak and has only been victorious in three of his last twelve outings, there’s no reason M-1 can’t sell this as a serious, big time fight is there?

"Kerr at one time was one of the best fighters on the planet," M-1 Global Vice President of Live Events Joe Kelly said. "His fall from grace was documented publicly on the popular HBO documentary “The Smashing Machine.” A lot of people have written Mark Kerr off but if he's able to beat Lawal on national television, suddenly he becomes a hot commodity again. Mark was already in training for a fight when we contacted him and I'm not exactly sure how hard Don was training. This will actually be a tougher fight for Lawal."

If that’s not enough to get you pumped up, they’re also adding one of those fun “sparring exhibitions,” this time between Fedor Emelianenko and Gegard Mousasi

In short, if you’re in Kansas City that weekend and want to see Mark Kerr pretending that he’s still a fighter while Fedor and Mousasi pretend that they are fighting, M-1’s “Breakthrough” is a perfect way to spend the evening.  If that doesn’t sound like your thing, well, maybe you and Don Frye should go try on dresses together or something.

Everyone, please BOYCOTT this show. M1 needs to go under fast

What a joke

@ Swedish,

I don't think you need to plead over that issue. M-1 is irrelavant.

Haha, that last paragraph was hilarious.

they wont be around much longer.....then Fedor will be all mine....MUUAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAAAA.........Dana White

only drag was Don frye!

Don Frye does whatever Don Frye wants. K chief?

you've got to be kidding me...Kerr was a devastating (*juiced) fighter, and the HBO documentary was great...but, I'd much rather go eat at a Perkins where a clean Kerr was managing then see this "show". Fedor is not worth the hand scrubbing it takes to touch these M1 guys.

"and when one of their fighters pulls out they attack his character like a bunch of fourteen year-old girls at a slumber party talking about the chick who just left the room"
You call this attacking their fighter??? When you have something to say about your fighters you can't get any more professional than this. As much as i dislike M1-Global for their stupid business negotiations and tactics, the UFC (Dana White) does the real trash talking and mistreating of their fighters.

Did you Don Frye can tear off his mustache and throw it like a furry, deadly boomerang?

...it's true!

@dude I prefer Dana White's in your face aggression that proves he's actually pissed off, rather than some passive aggressive bullshit to try and make the guy that just ditched your shitty fight card look like a pussy. Especially when it's Don Frye - trying to call the Frye a pussy is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. He'll just kill you in your sleep the day after you think he forgot about it.

M-1 needs to explode. Retarded one fight cards that noone gives a shit about. They are going to pull in a FRACTION of PPV buys that UFC does, we'll see how long their fighters like getting paid in birdseed.

Frye or Kerr...Who could I care less about? Seeing as I still have a "Mustache Rides" caption etched on my brain...my fear would say I care less about Kerr.

i have read this site for over a year, but after reading this b.s., i just had to register so i could post a response.

"We've heard rumors that he wasn't happy with the location change but our television partner, Mo Lawal, and every other fighter scheduled for the event are satisfied with Kansas City so why isn't it good enough for Don?"

hmmm, the sentiment of this media attack seems very familiar. i wonder why they chose those words... oh yeah, this was basically the exact words dana chose to use when addressing the media after m-1 screwed fedor, and fans, over by refusing to relent on any of their lame contract demands.

i suppose they realize that they lost that battle in the eyes of the media and fans so they figured it might work for them.

M1 is shit. The exec's are shit. The only fighter in their stables is shit.

I'd expect nothing less than shit from shit. So C-Bus is not surprised.

How could they talk such blasphemy about the Frye? I'd not be surprised to find out later that Don Frye showed up to the show in Kansas just to beat the piss out of this "Raimond" fellow.

Wow. M-1 has to be the biggest bunch of whiny bitch promoters ever. Yeah, they may have had a contract that stipulated change of venue yadda yadda yadda with Don Frye, but that assumes that they fucking well had an actual venue in the first place. If they want to say, that it's their "Phantom Partner's" fault for not getting an event in Los Angeles, then that brings up two points:

1) The Phantom Partner may have filled out the paperwork to get licensed in California as an MMA fight promoter, but that still means that M-1 has to be licensed along with any other partners. Tough shit for M-1 for not realizing that.
2) Presumably M-1 got this "Phantom Parner" to co-promote with them. Uh huh. Kinda makes Zuffa look pretty fucking good for staying the HELL away from dealing with any "promoters" who look like idiots holding their dicks an nothing else.

Fuck M-1. Fuck those smarmy little bitches.

I wonder what they are "breaking through" with this shit ass card. I'd rather watch my two cats fight than watch this garbage. I wonder if they will co-promote with YAMMA next.

Frye pulled out when he found out that M-1 was run by a bunch of commies.

How dare they disgrace a fine american mustache...hopefully Don sees those crazy ruskies in a hotel lobby after hours...

Wow, biased much? "m1 Crucifies him.." Sounds pretty tame compared to whatever the fuck dana feel like bashing any given week. Frye backed out, hes a douche for it, move on. Amazing how angry american fans are at M1 yet claim fedor isn't a big deal.

too bad. the trash talk between frye and mo on that inside mma episode was pretty epic.
