Mark Hunt to Get One More Shot in the UFC Against Chris Tuchscherer in Australia

(Ah, yes. The glory days. Photo via

Currently riding a six-fight losing streak with all losses coming in the first round, PRIDE/K-1 vet Mark Hunt last competed at UFC 119 in September, where he fell victim to a Sean McCorkle armlock in just 63 seconds. Hunt’s UFC debut was part of a contractual obligation carried over from his days in PRIDE, and we figured we’d seen the last of him in the Octagon when he lost in such garbage-ass fashion. And yet, the UFC has added the Kiwi kickboxer to the lineup of UFC 127 (February 27th; Sydney, Australia). Oceania represent?

Hunt will be taking on Team Deathclutch member Chris Tuchscherer, who’s also skating on thin ice, contract-wise. Tushcherer has gone 1-2 during his stint in the UFC, winning a razor-thin majority decision over Tim Hague between first-round knockout losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Brendan Schaub. As Gonzaga himself might say, loser, you are a fired. In other heavyweight news…

MMAWeekly is reporting
a matchup between TUF 10 contestant Jon Madsen (7-0, 4-0 UFC) and Mike Russow (13-1 w/ 1 no-contest, 2-0 UFC) for UFC Fight Night 24 (March 26, Seattle), which will also feature the previously reported bout between Sean McCorkle and Christian Morecraft, a.k.a. the last two guys that Stefan Struve KO’d. Maybe that doesn’t seem like a big deal to you, but it’s a step in the right direction considering the scarcity of heavyweight fights since UFC 121. Check it:

UFC 122: 0 heavyweight fights on the card
UFC 123: 0 HW fights
TUF 12 Finale: 0 HW fights
UFC 124: 1 HW fight
UFC 125: 0 HW fights
UFC Fight for the Troops 2: 2 HW fights (scheduled)
UFC 126: 0 HW fights (scheduled)
UFC 127: 1 HW fight (scheduled)

That’s an average of 0.5 heavyweight fights per card in a three-and-a-half month stretch. Come on Dana, these big bastards gotta eat…

Mark Hunt is of my favorite strikers. His fight with Rey Sefo in K1 is legendary. Now it seems he only fights in the UFC because of his old pride contract. The UFC is contractually obligated to give Mark Hunt fights. Dana White said so himself in an interview. If there was no contract issues I doubt Hunt would have ever been in the UFC. Its sad, Hunt was an incredibaly exciting fighter in mma and kickboxing. If u only know Mark Hunt from the UFC, look up his pride and k1 videos. they are a must see.

Chris has such a glass jaw I wouldn't be surprised if Hunt wins. Then both guys get cut.

There is a reason Hunt still has a job... the HW division is SCARCE. Carwin, Nelson, Velasquez: out indefinitely. Lesnar: killing shit or whatever it is Mountain Men do. The big guy division is scarily thin.
