Mark Munoz Explains Thoughts On Fighting Friend Anderson Silva and Why He Feels He’s Next in Line for a Shot

(Video courtesy of YouTube/FightHubTV)

When Mark Munoz politely mentioned that he wouldn’t be opposed to fighting his friend and sometimes training partner, UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva Saturday following his impressive win over Chris Leben in Birmingham, England, many of us were surprised, given the fact that the majority of fighters in the UFC seem reluctant to fight their pals.

Then he recanted and said that, actually he’d like to fight Michael Bisping instead, which made a lot more sense considering that a few fights ago Yushin Okami made us forget that Munoz was a top-tier wrestler.

Well, he’s back at it again.

In an interview “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” did with’s Marcos Villegas yesterday, the dangerous UFC middleweight touched on a number of topics, including why he’d take the fight, what it would mean to his friendship with Silva and why he doesn’t think Chael Sonnen deserves the next crack at the belt.

The brass tacks:

• Rates his performance against Leben as one of the best of his career

• Believes that the fight proved he’s well-rounded and on his way to becomeing champ

• Says he wasn’t willing to stand and trade with “The Crippler”

• Didn’t want to be another casualty statistic of Leben’s left hand

• Says he feels that he deserves the title shot next due to MMAMath because he lost to Okami and Yushin fought for the title next and because he beat a former number one contender in Demian Maia

• Calls Leben a top five fighter and past contender

• Doesn’t believe Sonnen should get t title shot after winning one fight, even though he dominated a top-tier fighter in Brian Stann

• Wants to fight Anderson because he has the belt even though they’re friends who often train together

• Reveals that they had an “unspoken rule” that they would never fight each other

• Hope’s Anderson isn’t insulted by him calling him out, but he wants to be a champion

So you think the UFC is completely above board, and Cage Potato is a real enemy of the Dana. Lots of people have brains, made of many different elements. If I had to guess, you've got **** for brains.

I pretty sure Silva will be fighting Sonnen next. If it doesn't happen and Bisping or Munoz end up getting a shot, then it would really just show the amount of clout and say that Silva has in the UFC, as Dana White himself wants this fight and it makes great business sense (business is business, right?). In a way, it'll be good, as it'll prove that Dana isn't the be all end all of UFC, but it would be terrible match-making.

@ Wallly, good point about people calling out Chael, I am yet to hear a fighter do so, hell Bisping only mentioned his name and after Chaels response he backtalked quickly. I'm no Chael fan, except some of his comedy, but he really is the logical choice for the shot, Chael has probably the best chance against Silva and the fight sells itself. I don't think the winner of Bisping vs Mayhem deseves the shot, he can fight Munoz instead. I will say a fight between Sonnen and Munoz would be interesting and would be a true number one contendor match, but the timing may not be right to set up a contendor for Silva. That said I think Munoz could possibly beat Sonnen but would get wrecked by Silva, I really think Chael is Silva's toughest opponent.

Why are people surprised Sonnen gets another shot after one win? And how do they figure he should get to the back of the line and work his way back up?

There have been many people who got IMMEDIATE rematches after losing, with no win in-between. ilva-Sonnen 1 wa extremely close... actually it wasn't - Sonnen had won 4 rounds decisively, but he fucked up, made a mistake and lost. It wa a lo, fair enough, but it proved he was the biggest challenge for Silva and came within inches of defeating him. So YES< Sonnen shoud get his rematch ASAP.
Wallly- November 8, 2011 at 5:15 pm
Munoz should have called out Chael since Anderson hasn't agreed to fight him yet, "duck" that would make more sense, then he would deserve the shot if he beat Sonnon.
Wallly- November 8, 2011 at 5:11 pm
@nickyroose You will see, these other middleweights are not in same league as Anderson and chael. i don't think anyone else but them will be seeing that belt for a few years anyway. fuck your spaceship talk . you are just nuthugging munoz.
nickyroose- November 8, 2011 at 4:52 pm
@ Wall-E

What in the shit are you talking about? You need to get your ass off that spaceship. sonnen had 6x the legal amount of T in his system. NO AMOUNT OF HRT WILL CAUSE THAT. You are stupid or actually Senior Kale himself to believe that.

@Stann -- hide. Because you can't wrestle for shit and Munoz will destroy you. Easily.

@Skeletor -- Just shut up. Just shut the hell up. You are an idiot. I wanna believe you are a troll b/c everything you say is so fucktarded I can't believe you are not doing it on purpose. Hamil gets destroyed these day by the Flip wrecking machine.

PS anyone who says that motherfucker does not do the "pound" of GnP better than anyone in the game right now. Dream on btiches and I gots money on my boy Munoz

*Legal note -- Not against AS I am not retarded.

Damn capthca.
Wallly- November 8, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Another funny thing is i haven't heard anyone say they wanna fight sonnon.? I think there be some scared homies out there.
RSparrow- November 8, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Belfort is in title contention too*success, diffiro
dude- November 8, 2011 at 4:31 pm
I saw Anderson Silva in a HEAVY D music video....jump to 2:37...guess this is where he picked up his dance moves.
RSparrow- November 8, 2011 at 4:23 pm
Nothing coming from you in gonna make a whole lot of sense considering you think UFC is ran like WWE, and all rankings are fixed.
To think Munoz deserves a title shot right now is ludacris. There are a couple guys who he needs to get through first, those being, Bisping, Sonnen, and Stann. (Miller if he gets past Bisping) After that is sorted out, there will be a more clear distinction to who gets to face the spider. Period.
Wallly- November 8, 2011 at 3:22 pm
The number one contender should be the person who has the best chance at beating the champ. I'll say it one more time, its Re-fuckin-dankulous to think that anyone but chael has a chance, lets quit building his record with fighters who respect anderson so much, thats what gets your ass kicked. @dim mak. check your facts, sonnon was found to not be guilty, it was not even close to being a high enough testone rate to make a difference.
XENOPHON- November 8, 2011 at 3:09 pm
@dim mak
you just placed the final touch of death on such a fucked up view of who deserves a title shot, and who doesn't.
If we switch it up, to who brings in the most sales, then Mark Munoz - needs to get on the Filipino live chicken delivery vehicle (bicycle) and learn how to promote and market his ass better.
XENOPHON- November 8, 2011 at 3:05 pm

Stann lost to Sonnen miserably - he was way outclassed.

Before that loss, he only won 3 fights. Count em,
Mike Massenzio
Chris Leben
Jorge Santiago
Two of those fights where against flunkies, and the 3rd had not answer for Munoz.
Before any of that BEST competition, Stann lost to Phil Davis. I man who only had 5 professional total.
GTFOOH with that bullshit.
dim mak- November 8, 2011 at 3:02 pm
The other argument, that Munoz didn't mention, is that he's not a convicted cheater like Sonnen. Sonnen should get absolutely NO CREDIT for "taking Silva into deep waters," when he had to cheat to get there. I mean, I could beat the world champ at Scrabble if I took 20 tiles. I could beat the world champ at chess if I stole half his pieces when he wasn't looking. Sonnen shouldn't be rewarded for cheating, no matter how funny his standup routine is.
fatbellyfrank- November 8, 2011 at 2:07 pm
@Rsparrow, agreed, that looks like the most logical scenario for him
XENOPHON- November 8, 2011 at 2:03 pm
If all the rest ranked is the phoney UFC fight each other, what is there left for Anderson to do? Maybe he should either take more than one or two fights a year, vacate and step up like a big boy.
RSparrow- November 8, 2011 at 1:59 pm
Munoz has winner of Bitchbing/Miller, AND Stann ahead of him before anything.
Gerard Gordeau- November 8, 2011 at 1:38 pm
They should do Stann vs Munoz....Leben didn't look right in that fight
Savageleto- November 8, 2011 at 12:50 pm
All of these "number 1's" need to fight each other first.

Munoz and Sonnen need to fight each other before either one of them hop over the other, as wins over Stann and Leben do not make you a number one contender...
skeletor- November 8, 2011 at 12:05 pm
Who cares. Munoz really isn't that big of a draw and if he thinks earning a title shot off of winning alone is possible he is also stupid.
If he can't see a Matt Hamill head kick coming what the fuck does he think would happen if he got in the ring with Anderson? I don't care how long ago that happened it will be twice as bad if Anderson gets a hold of him
