Marloes Coenen Signs Three Fight Deal with BlackEye Promotions

Zuffa may be looking to bring Alistair Overeem back into the fold, but there is one Golden Glory fighter who is moving on to greener other pastures. Former Strikeforce 135lb Women’s Champion Marloes Coenen has signed a three fight, non-exclusive contract with North Carolina-based BlackEye Promotions.

Coenen was cut from the Strikeforce roster following her failed title defense against Meisha Tate last month, though the exile was more political than a reflection of her performance. The drop from Showime to an unknown regional promotion isn’t a glamorous one, but BlackEye is trying to establish itself as a player in the WMMA game. Its upcoming October 1st card—The Breast Cancer Beatdownboasts six female bouts that include fighters Erin Toughill and Roxanne Modafferi.

It is a somewhat curious move, considering that Golden Glory and the UFC are once again on speaking terms. Though her contract with BlackEye is non-exclusive, we all know that Zuffa doesn’t like to share its toys, so even if her current promotion is cool with a return to Strikeforce it isn’t likely to happen unless she breaks free of those ties. “Rumina” expects to return to action sometime in February. We’ll be watching…if that’s an option.

@XENO-Just cause I don't really care for WMMA I'm not trying to crabs on Marloes.

I think it's a genius move for a smaller promotion to really focus on Women's MMA and pick up all the recognizable fighters they can. Odds are its time with Zuffa will end soon, and if they can be the go-to promotion for Women's MMA they could find some success.

I will give you that it's a nightmare for promotion, outside of the add-on to the smaller shows. I view it that due to lack of draw - or willingness to include with the bigger organizations is like you said, nothing we (here) should be concerned with or have much influence over.
It will then be up to women for building their own talent base and doing what comes natural - bitch, moan, ridicule, and complain until they cause the men calling the shots to capitulate and fold.
I think that is now doubly difficult, as most FOX viewers lean to the right, and come from the mindset that there is something wrong with two competitive women in combat.
I give props to the chick for simply moving forward, and not thinking she would somehow be miraculously one day be saved by her former training partners like Overeem.
Here's an idea, lets stick Marloes in with Reinhardt and see which gets sent out of the cage first? GRIN

I'm really excited for your niece. But that doesn't change the fact that most womans MMA is a nightmare to promote and has very little drawing power. Why? Because aside from a handfull of promotable fighters there are even less exciting ones.

I got a 3 1/2 year old niece, and will be singing that little chick up for some fight class soon. I'd rather watch her at practice some punches and kicks - learning some coordination and confidence skills vs. having her running the grassy field trying to score a goal or hit some tennis ball off the "T."
From what Marloes said, I don't think anyone is worried these hicks from North Carolina or Zuffa is, or is not getting their fair cut. I sensed Coenen's is a idealist, and has hopped on board the bandwagon of promoting WMMA for about a year out of her life (3 fights.)
She is a former scamp champ, and makes for a good promotional spokesperson - regardless what we think.

Who cares. Aside from a select few attractive fighters WMMA is not important. If ZUFFA can't turn a profit on it what makes some tiny org out of the south think they can do so?

Good for her. It's non-exclusive so she is not locked down - or stuck if other opportunities pop.
Women don't have many options in the first place, and she is good enough to walk into any venue at anytime.
It's better to fight and make a little coin competing, then to sit around and wait for a call that may never arrive.
Now at age 30, with the dark eye-liner and the leopard skin cougar outfit, I'd put her ass to work!

Marloes looks strikingly similar to the girl that took my Red Wings. Maybe a more pretty version. I bet Marloes would at least have had the decency to warn she was bleedin' before somebody went down on her... fuckin' blueberry schnapps...

I'd say greener... at least there's a chance she might get some respect from her boss. And it's not like she was making a butt load of money under zuffa.
