Master Joe Rogan Shares the Secrets of the Turning Side Kick

(Props: joerogandotnet)

Before UFC color-man Joe Rogan became a disciple of Eddie Bravo and 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu, he was a diehard Tae Kwon Do practitioner who won several championships as a black belt. He obviously keeps up with his training, because the dude can still throw a mean turning side kick (known as the "spinning back kick" to you laymen). Of course, this video raises more questions than it answers. For instance, will we eventually see a full series of instructional DVDs from the analyst/comedian? How long would Gus Johnson last in a cage-fight against Joe? What happened to the lizard?

I'm not impressed. Its supposed to be delivered with the heel not the edge or bottom of the foot.

joe rogan waited for the right moment to unleash an explosion on that bag

Joe Rogan moves so fast there is a noticeable pause while the viewer waits for the sound waves to reach the camera.

"That's a lot of fuckin' power"
Translation: "I've a boner the size of a medium sized municipal building in Dubai."

Joe is like the John Madden of MMA commentating... I've never been a big fan... but I did become a Joe Rogan fan when he confronted Carlos Mencia on stage. War Rogan.
itsgalf- October 5, 2010 at 12:28 pm
unfortunately Joe Rogan the commentator likes the heavy bag more and pretends like it's dominating the fight
mma samurai- October 5, 2010 at 12:10 pm
Oh Joe Rogan you crazy!!!
DazedNConfused- October 5, 2010 at 11:02 am
That's pretty impressive!

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Joe and these instructional videos. He definitely gets a lot of power out of those kicks.

With all the jokes and weed tokage I seem to have forgotten Joe Rogan is/was actually a skilled martial artist.

Yeah, but where does the power come from...?
MoTropolis- October 5, 2010 at 10:42 am
Rogan has got really good form.
Frank Mur- October 5, 2010 at 10:34 am
There really was no lizzard, Joe Rogan is just so high, he actually caught his halucination on video.
SnallTrippin- October 5, 2010 at 9:56 am
I've always wondered why they just don't bring knives to these MMA fights? It seems like that would be a lost faster and you'd really surprise your opponent...

@ Fried taco, it leaves you too exposed..a well executed teep kick will be nearly as affective and leaves you square on with both hands up. That's a kick you don't see enough off
Fried Taco- October 5, 2010 at 9:13 am
@RwilsonR Sorry, the correct answer is: Just keep watching Jon Jones fights, and you will see it some day.

That lizard is Diego Sanchez's sparring partner. That little bitch totally has some sick reflexes. I wonder what he's doing with Joe now?
hooligun- October 5, 2010 at 8:50 am
Great post CP! Gotta love Joe Rogan.
Viva Hate- October 5, 2010 at 8:35 am
You need to link the extended version that features Joe getting high with lollipops and what appears to be breath strips, doing a trippy version of “Drinking Out of Cups,” sleeping in his special chamber, and showing corner men how to properly clean up ice. It was a little strange.
destinationblood- October 5, 2010 at 8:34 am
theres a part 2 about the side-check kick somewhere if you can find it
buffbuffbuff- October 5, 2010 at 8:26 am
its obvious that Rogan and the bearded dragon took several bong rips and made fun of the Mir vs. Cro Cop fight after this video
badmarthafocker- October 5, 2010 at 8:24 am
Somewhere in the world Mike Goldberg is wondering if Joe can finish him from that position
J-Dog- October 5, 2010 at 8:20 am
I'd love to see Rogan fight in MMA, but I don't think he ever will.

That lizard appeared to be a bearded dragon, which would have to be an escaped pet... unless the vid was shot in Australia.

@ Fried Taco - If you mean a TKD-style tornado kick, I think nobody uses it because it leaves you very open for takedowns since you lose your base when doing it.

If you mean an SFII-style tornado kick, I think Nick Diaz tried it once against Gomi, but said he was countered with "some little hadouken fuckin' punch, that busted my shit up." I had always thought the tornado kick simply went over a hadouken, but I guess not. So I don't know how well the tornado kick translates to MMA.
herb137- October 5, 2010 at 8:11 am
thats a lot of fuckin power
Peetee- October 5, 2010 at 8:07 am
So Rogan is about to make his octagon debut against this guy called Everlast...
henropotter- October 5, 2010 at 7:45 am
fuck the lizard and the kick...That Joe's garage?! Show me that car on the lift.
