Matt Hamill Out, K-Sos In Against Brandon Vera @ UFC 102

Krzysztof Soszynski MMA UFCBrandon Vera UFC MMA

The light-heavyweight match between Matt Hamill and Brandon Vera — which was scheduled to open the broadcast of UFC 102 (August 29th, Portland) — has been canceled, as Hamill was forced to pull out of the fight due to a torn meniscus in his knee. Luckily, TUF 8 standout Krzysztof Soszynski was available to fill in, and he’ll be taking on Vera in Hamill’s place.

It’ll be gut-check time for both fighters. K-Sos has looked fantastic in his current 3-0 run in the UFC, taking out Shane Primm and Brian Stann by kimura and knocking out Andre Gusmao at UFC 98, but he needs a win over a bigger-name opponent to establish himself as a true contender in the division. Meanwhile, Brandon Vera has gone from hot heavyweight prospect to 205-pound question mark during his time in the Octagon. He most recently chopped down Mike Patt with leg kicks at UFC 96, which got him back to the W column after a previous split-decision loss against Keith Jardine. A win against Soszynski would prove that the Truth is still a factor; a loss solidifies his status as a gatekeeping can-crusher.

As for Hamill, his trainer Duff Holmes told MMA Junkie:

"[Hamill is] going for a scope tomorrow, and we’ll be back to training after three or four weeks of rehab. It was something that just crept up on us and was getting worse and worse. It was really affecting his ability to go to the ground and was giving out on him. … We are very disappointed with having to pull out, and we were really looking forward to the fight with Vera. He is a true mixed martial artist, and we were eager to test Matt against someone of his abilities."

Remember: Nate Marquardt vs. Demian Maia is also on this card.

I like this card better than 101. Jardine is cool but I want to see Thiago go the fuck off and bring that vicious ass ground and pound.

Always happy to watch Big Nog or Randy fight, fully fucking pumped to watch them fight each other. People on here always hype the warrior bullshit, but I honestly think these two exemplify it. This fight is way underhyped.

couture vs. nog: the battle to see who is second from the bottom.
uninspiring to say the least.

i was really hoping to see vera beat the fuck out of hammil but he wouldve just layed on him the whole match and i wouldve been dissapointed. i think this shapes up to be a better fight, truthfully. hhahah

I like the replacment. "The Polish Experiment" has a big opportunity to use the "Truth" as a huge stepping stone.

I can't stand Hammil. I still see his little buddy trailing behind him handing out cheese sandwiches like in the fighter house.

"that stinks i was looking forward to that fight. I'm hopeing Vera has a strong year, just because i love playing with him in UFC Undisputed and love his victory dances. I'd suck him dry. No homo."

I know we have a "Best Comments of the Week" and you win an outdated T-shirt, but can we start having the "Gayest Comment of the Week?" 'Cause I think that's what this kid was going for...

What is up with the Ben's sleeping in today? There is way more to write about than what's been posted so far. Henderson v. Franklin 2. Petruzelli's fighting again. Fedor could care less about the UFC.

K sos doesn't stand a chance, his ass in getting knocked out. Atleast Hamil had a decent shot at winning the fight.
Fedor vs. Bas- July 20, 2009 at 2:07 pm
K-Sos is good, but he didnt even make it to the final of TUF to fight Bader. He lost to Vinnie. Then again, Brandon Vera sucks. So maybe this is a good fight to see if K-Sos can step up. I just think he is still somewhat of an immature fighter and would like him to get 1-2 more fights before he steps up to a "gate-keeper" where he can be 3-4 fights away from a title fight.

First of all, I'm pretty sure that "No Homo" doesn't counter-act "I'd suck him dry."

Second of all, I could see Nate Marquardt getting the better of the standing exchanges in the Maia fight, and then making a stupid fucking mistake in taking Maia down. Maia by arm-bar, second round.
