As we told you earlier this week, Matt Hughes was not at all impressed with Georges St. Pierre at UFC 87. His blog post about how boring he found the GSP-Fitch fight seemed laced with no small amount of jealousy. That’s somewhat understandable. A guy beats your ass twice, you may have some ill feelings towards him. But now Hughes is trying to claim that after GSP’s fight with Fitch (which Hughes walked out of halfway through) he does not deserve to be mentioned in the pound-for-pound debate. Has anyone told Hughes yet that GSP actually won that fight?
The hilarious thing is that Hughes also says B.J. Penn deserves to be considered among the best pound-for-pound. As in, the same B.J. Penn who Hughes (and GSP) beat. But GSP, who beat Hughes twice, convincingly, gets knocked out of the running for beating a guy who is ranked above Hughes in just about every welterweight top ten list in existence. You following this?
If only Hughes could bring himself to admit that, while he is a legend of the sport who was great in his time, that time is now over and St. Pierre is on top. Is that so hard? Probably, yeah. Especially for a guy like Hughes, whose stubborn unwillingness to believe that anyone could possibly be better than him has served him well in the past. Still, he’s got to let it go. Watching a former champ snipe at the guy who supplanted him is just sad. If Hughes really thought that GSP wasn’t any good, you know what he’d probably do? Beat him. I guess when that’s out of the question you settle for insults.

commentsthus I take all his major wins away from him for one reason or another he has yet to win a Clean match. I still think hes a paper champion and he should tested for roids. also
he needs a hit with a crowbar!
Maybe Matt Whos can start fighting women! That is the only way he will be on top again! ............Wait I take that back! I forgot about Cyborg!
How can you be bored with that fight. That was filled with knock downs and survival and techniques.
also if Hughes wasn't impress with GSP-Fitch Fight. Lets see how he does versus Fitch. If he's one to criticize, let him show face.
I say Hughes has a 3% chance of beating Fitch haha. The 3% comes from if Dan Mirgliotta pokes Fitch in the eye and Hughes has a little advantage
Forrest is a horrible example, he's the GSP of LHW's...he also makes a huge cut and is a giant compared to most of his opponents. I don't even have him top 10.

You make some intelligent points but to not have GSP in the p4p top 5 is almost laughable. He is the only UFC champion I believe to have beaten every opponent he has faced. Any one would include most likely BJ Penn in the p4p top 5 and GSP has beaten him. You magically make GSP the same weight as F Griffin the champ in his wieght division and the fight would have a similair outcome as the Fitch fight, Forrest would last but GSP would win. In the middleweight division GSP could take anyone easily except Silva, however that fight could go either way... Honestly not having GSP in the p4p top 5 would be a joke dude. I feel he is at least top 3 by the way.
But I agree with Hughes that GSP isn't top 5 p4p.
Fitch was the first top-tier fighter GSP has faced who is bigger than he is. Don't get me wrong, GSP is an immensely talented fighter who is working to address the holes in his game, and I think we've yet to see him peak as a fighter...but for the most part, internet readers/bloggers/reporters don't really understand what pound for pound really means, and 99% of internet p4p rankings are absolute garbage.
Pound for pound debates were initially created to compare boxers in different weight classes regardless of size. Empahasize "regardless" in the previous statement, and understand that it doesn't mean "size doens't matter." Size absolutely matters. "Regardless" means that if all the fighters were the same size, who would win?
The fact is, Georges is great at cutting weight and uses his superior size and strength as much as his skillset in fighting.
I'm not arguing that he's not a great fighter, but I'm putting things into perspective. P4p discussions were to focus on who has the greatest pure SKILL, rather than who uses their skill AND their size/strength advantages.
GSP supporters will refer to his list of dominating performances over elite fighters: Hughes x2, Trigg, Sherk, Serra [the second fight, obviously], Mayhem and now Fitch. Some of his more ardent admirers would even add Koscheck to the list, [a fight I wouldn't say was dominanting...it was a convincing win, however]; but with the exception of a pedestrian Mayhem and Fitch, Georges has been significantly bigger and arguably stronger than anyone he's faced.
When you compare that to someone like Fedor, Shogun or Kid, or even Aoki--who frequently overcome size, reach, strength and ringweight disadvantages based purely on their skillset, Georges's accomplishments are absolutely and unequivocably great as a welterweight, but actually have little bearing on a bonafide pound-for-pound discussion.
Then, when you factor in that he was beaten down by an unranked natural lightweight [on the verge of retirement] who won the title shot on a reality show, showed no signs of being a quality striker in the past, and gave up 5+ inches of reach to outstrike him inro verbal submission...that pretty much eclipses any logical ranking of him top p4p. Yes, he went back to avenge that loss...but it doesn't magically erase it, unless you are a hypocritical fanboy.
Georges is unquestionably the best welterweight on the planet right now. But he hasn't proved anything in a qualified pound for pound discussion as of yet. I'm not saying he won't, or can't...I'm just saying dominating Fitch was the first real step in a p4p journey.

Hughes was a strong wrestler who overpowered guys. That's it. GSP is a complete fighter who beat Hughes at his own game, and who just flat out beat Hughes (twice). GSPs 1st lost to Hughes was a panic tap, he could have beat him them if not for nerves.
But anyway, Matt acts like a jerk all too often and needs to WIN a fight. If he loses to Serra, which he very well might, then that's a tough way to go out.
GSP wrecked Fitch in a very, very tough fight. Hughes probably never fought anyone the likes of Fitch, so he needs to shut up.
His name is Queen. Esther. Is that so hard?
Yes Matt Hughes I agree that a good fighter should have to not only go out there, but, also try to stay for the whole fight.
Not sure if this is all sour grapes though. Penn choked Hughes out the first time (then gave him a kiss on the head) and probably took the first two rounds of their second fight. Yet Hughes still compliments BJ.
Then again, BJ never made Hughes look irrelevant. GSP pretty much did to Hughes what Silva did to Franklin. Two devastating losses and suddenly you just don't seem like a serious contender anymore.
Frank Trigg once admitted that Hughes is a guy he can't beat. Maybe Hughes should admit the same thing about GSP. Show a little class, exit the sport as the "most dominant" welterweight champion in the UFC, take your well-deserved spot in the hall of fame, and enjoy life on the farm.

GSP did not beat BJ.
I actually looked up the records and it turns out he did...heck i even watched the fight...Now i like BJ alot but GSP did win that fight. It was close and before BJ decided he actually wanted to fight , granted, but GSP won that fight. Can't wait but it looks like itll be the big Super Bowl PPV not New Years Eve....O and i really hate Matt Hughes
He can't admit that GSP has evolved his game to another level. Put him in the Mark Coleman, Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock category. Guys who were great in their day, but don't have the well rounded skill set to compete at this level now. Oh well, we can blame it on too many strikes to the skull
Take it Matt. Take the fact that you fought an inexperienced GSP the first time and that's why you won. The other times, he beat your ass and stuffed you on your takedowns. GSP kicks ass and you no longer do. And saying that the Lesnar fight was more exciting than the GSP fight is fucking ridiculous. Matt just wanted to see some "man-handling". No, it's not that kind Matt. Although, you did get to see a gay cowboy routine at the end. Does that satisfy you handling of men?
GSP is in the TOP 3 P4P PERIOD!!!
A Silva
GSP
