Matt Hughes Says He’s Fighting Renzo Gracie in Abu Dhabi This April

(See Royce?  We told you this would happen unless you started with your day with a hearty country breakfast, but you just wouldn’t listen.)

The rumors are true, says Matt Hughes.  On his official blog, also known as your go-to source for decontextualized Bible verses and pictures of dudes holding rifles, the former UFC welterweight champ says he’ll be taking on Renzo Gracie on April 10 in Abu Dhabi.  It will be Gracie’s debut in the UFC, and his first fight since he won a victory via disqualification against Frank Shamrock in February of 2007.  This must be what Hughes was hinting at when he said he needed a fight against someone his own age that he could get fired up for.

Beating up and aged and overrated Royce Gracie (he hadn’t won a meaningful fight in at least six years when he fought Hughes) is one thing, but Renzo might prove to be a little tougher.  He’s more well-rounded, has stayed more active in the sport lately, and is known to be tight with Abu Dhabi royalty.  That’s not to say that he’ll have his buddy the Sheikh fill Hughes’ locker room with scorpions before the fight, but it’s still too early to rule that possibility out entirely.

@Nate: they won't dominate until that silly IED rule gets overturned.

You'd think it would be fighters from the Middle East takin over the UFC - and not Brazilians - considering how notorious they all are for killing and maiming each other.
macreadysshack- December 11, 2009 at 1:51 pm
It'll be Hughes only chance to ever win anything in Abu Dhabi . . .

@ woah - Right, because Hughs is always knocking everybody out.

UFC Iran wont be far behind. I cant wait for that shit.

I too am confused. It reads this will be Renzos UFC debut, so Im assuming its an MMA bout that will take place in Abu Dhabi? I figured if having a UFC event in Australia is a big deal, it would be just as big in Abu Dhabi aswell but I haven't heard much noise about this one.

This is the undercard to Pedro Martinez-Don Zimmer II

@divinryan: Rubber match with Penn? I don't think Hughes' rubber is even on the road anymore. This fight doesn't make any sense except to see Hughes beat senseless and then choked. Okay, okay . . . I see your point and I'm kind of getting on board now.

Who cares about this fight? Farmboy, fetch me that pail of water. Farmboy, please don't fight anymore. After age 30, the high school jock bible thumping wrestling champion schtick reeks of arrested development. Don't fight it, just open that car dealership.

If Hughes beats Renzo, I'd like to see a rubber match with Penn.

The ADCC was only held in Abu Dhabi the first 2 years from what I understand. Since then its come to the states twice, and this year was in Spain.

But if you really want the number, this is UFC 112. ;P Although it hasn't been formally announced yet.

ya i think theres a ufc event going down over there on that sand castle.. didnt u see the article where DW was hunting wild boar's with his posse( one of em was the sheik).. but then his bitch ass got scared to pull the trigger.. what a pussy.. everyone knows your supposed to hunt boar with pit bulls and a bowie knife... fuckin pussy
LBo- December 11, 2009 at 11:09 am
This is sort of a tricky headline, since Abu Dhabi could also indicate ADCC... is there not a UFC event number associated yet?
Anhonestmoose- December 11, 2009 at 11:07 am
so is the ufc having an event in abu dhabi or is this a grappling match? because i am a bit confused.
woah- December 11, 2009 at 11:02 am
I'd love to see a knock out from renzo.
yeah that would be real nice

If Hughes ends up winning they will cut off his hands for "cheating" on live TV... thats how the Sheikh rolls. Nigga doesnt fuck around.
GetUpAndKill- December 11, 2009 at 10:48 am
Hughes will be waaaay out of his comfort zone unless they let him shoot an AK at a goat or something. I'm surprised that he agreed to the location of this fight. Seriously.

Anyway, hoping to see Gracie bring back a little credibility. Don't call me Matt Serra or anything but I enjoy a little paypack on served with a shin but it would be great if he was submitted. In reality I think this fight goes to a UD.

Good question! I gather that the United Arab Emirates isn't quite as uptight as some other countries in the middle east, even if they are just a stone's throw away from each other.
