Matt Lindland: “I’ve Got a Game Plan for Chael to Finish Anderson Before the End of the Third Round”

Our buddy Jonathan Shrager published a must-read interview with Matt Lindland on Bleacher Report yesterday, in which “The Law” discusses his feud with Dan Henderson, the movie Vision Quest, his Libertarian political beliefs, what it’s like to have a beer with Chael Sonnen, and much more. This little exchange stood out in particular:

BLEACHER REPORT: You’ve gone on record as stating that Anderson Silva is already attempting to shirk Chael. If the fight eventually materialises, how would Chael fare in the rematch?
MATT LINDLAND: I think the rematch would look just like the first one, except I’ve got a game plan for Chael to finish him before the end of the third round. So, yeah it’ll look similar to their first encounter, but with some additional techniques and strategy, it won’t make it to the championship rounds.

Would these additional techniques involve wrestling submission holds or BJJ?
BJJ submissions? We are not Brazilians. We are Americans. You understand that right? Why would we be working BJJ? We do not employ BJJ. We employ American wrestling submissions.

That explains the use of steroids... American wrestling... and look at Chael's back, full of acne, typical of steroid use (as well as his jaw, aggression, etc. Just google Maia vs Sonnen to see what he looked like before roids)

i had a feeling lindland was a fool. now we know for sure. what a tool. have fun with your plan man. and, in like 4 months, you can let er' rip and fael will use good ol' merican wrestling submissions on the brazilian. that must be why fael tapped last time. you didn't create a plan. now you got one! you can totally win!

Also, in wrestling you can't tap out. When you get someone in a wrestling submission it's actually a pin, so unless you get their shoulders flat on the mat all they can do is scream. I always think people are pussies for tapping out to neck cranks because you would be laughed off the team if you gave up from a crossface in wrestling. Twisters are a bitch because you can't really get their back flat with them so you just have to suffer through those. Sometimes the ref will call the pin out of pitty.

There are many american wrestling submissions. The guillotine aka twister, the power crossface aka neck crank, the banana split, and a good deal more that I can't name off the top of my head. That said, most of them require you to have your opponents back and are completely ineffective when they are belly up, which is why you rarely see them in mma or bjj. Wrestling is a different ball game because you're suppose to give up your back when you go down, otherwise you are getting pinned. This explanation doesn't make Lindlands comments any less retarded, by the way.

Sounds like we can expect to see Chael dropping back for a figure-four leglock attempt if he gets Silva on his back again. I heard they've also brought in their own Steven Seagal figure: Bob Backlund. No way the Brazilians have developed a counter to the Chicken Wing.

We all knew Matt Lindland was a little stupid, or at least dangerously clumsy, but this, "we don't use no ferener martial arts 'round here", bullshit is on a completely separate plane. They're going to have part ways a bit with American Exceptionalism, unless they're fine with Chael continuing to be UFC champ exclusively in his own mental realm where triangles don't exist.
