I don’t think he’s disappointed about getting paid, people. If you bust your ass preparing for something and in the end it doesn’t happen, it’s always a bit of a psychological letdown. He should keep in shape and be ready to jump into a fight at one of the upcoming events though and he can double his paycheck.

I get Jake feeling a little upset but he should realize Dana really wants to see Fitch get beat up, and thats just not going to happen if Fitch isnt fighting.

Its also worth mentioning the UFC does take care of fighters that have to move to the back burner, but not if they complain to the press about how unfair life is. You see, the UFC pays Trolls to search the internet, searching for those that would cause trouble for the King and his Court. Once discovered, you are marked and life becomes tuff. The sports top paying sponsors mysteriously stop calling, you find punches or kicks you’ve taken to your face on pre-fight highlight reels. Dana stops talking to you and after weeks of cold shoulders and unresponded emails and phone calls to Joe Silva, your agent calls and says the UFC has cut you.

I think the possibility nobody’s considering here is that what Ellenberger says and what Ellenberger thinks might be different. How much good would it have done his career if he’d said:

‘Woop woop! Free money. I wish this happened every fight. See you in the champagne room, bitches, I’ll be the one with an unbruised face.’

So Saunders gets to fill in. I have to wonder, WTF, was Epic Beard Man busy that night? Was he attending someone’s parking lot sale where they give away free hot dogs and soda or what cause I’m calling bullshit if he didn’t get the call first.

Granted it will probobly take him a year to see the money.

@omunto – exactly, 5-7 days for the average weight cut. Ellenberger actually does happen to be a small welterweight also. He probobly got the news just as he was starting to get the munchies.

if he wanted to make a move like that, even after getting ditched by saunders, he could have kept trim and offered to travel to charlotte or abu dhabi as a possible replacement; instead of stuffing his face today as documented by tracy lee.

Jake was disappointed? Is he that stupid? Sh*t, all he has to do is run around claiming he won his fight! He is getting paid as if he did. So why not celebrate? If he wants to fight so bad, ask Dana to put him in against someone else. Dana has no qualms about fighters who want to fight. He loves that. Respects fighters for that. Free money; he trained for that money. Hopefully, once it’s in his hand, he’ll look upon it differently.

If I was faced with a choice of two opponents that would likely beat me, I’d ask for the one with the bigger name, too. A loss to Fitch is next to meaningless – he’s beat pratically everyone at 170, save GSP. A loss to Ellenberger, on the other hand, would have caused Saunders’ stock to plummet, because most causal fans don’t realize what a beast Jake is.

Not really an opinion either way but I wonder if the fight contract covers his pay if his fight is cancelled this close to the show.

He’s actually getting paid to do 12 weeks of physical training that you couldn’t last one hour in.

Look – everyone bitches about how the non-big-name-stars get screwed in this sport. Everyone loves to talk about how much better every other show is than the UFC because they don’t have Dana White involved. But in all of these other shows, fighters get treated like crap, their fights get cancelled, and they get paid nothing. The UFC is paying Ellenberger not just his show money, but win money, too. And they are giving a hell of an opportunity to Ben Saunders. Plus, Ellenberger is healthy and ready to fight, and could easily be shoved onto one of the upcoming shows in a month or two. So instead of getting one pay day to last him six months, he could very well be lined up for two for the price/training of one.

Is everything in the situation totally fair? No. Welcome to life, bitches. In fact, most of this situation has been more than fair compared to how the UFC could have treated it. Ellenberger should learn from this, and get Joe Silva on speed dial for the next time their is an injury.

WTF you taking about man? Granted a ton of weight comes off the final 2 days but unless Ellenerger is a light Welterweight, I probably started cutting 5-7 days ago. Not a ton sure but No doubt about it his diet changed quite a bit.

I generally check cagepotato at work seeing as how 99% of posts happen in the business day but today I checked it after work at home while pretty wasted and I must say… BF and/or BG… you are not surprisingly much more funny when I’m drunk. Ellenberger got LUCKY. That’s free money, and he can fight again as soon as the opportunity arrises. Luckilly he got the news before he had to cut all that damn weight. Plus now, the UFC kinda owes him one. This could be a seriously awesome blessing in disguise, what of Daley or Koscheck gets injured and they put him in as a replacement? A higher profile fight, plus a bunch of free money, Jake has nothing to complain about.

Jake E. isn’t going anywhere. Read his fight history and it looks damn good on paper.

Saunders ASKED to fight Fitch? That might not have been the smartest career move. Good luck finding someone to favor you against Jon Fitch…

BAD NEWS: The short version of the Hendo Strikeforce commercial cuts out the fly-in from stage right. Why cut it? It only takes another half-second. They are missing out on a valuable opportunity to make me laugh.

Saunders cost me money against Swick, but it pales in comparison to what Saunders cost Ellenberger(oops almost forgot his name there) by fighting Fitch at 111.
Fitch will beat Saunders unspectacularly and then wait in line for his second loss to GSP.

Saunders has that vulnerable chin too, Ellenberger could have lit him up to the tune of $50,000 bonus bucks on top of what he’s gettin’ paid just to show up in T-shirt and jeans.

to me it looked like saunders ducked ellenberger. he knows fitch will try to take him down if he cant handle him on the feet, ellenberger would have stood with him and he showed some power in his last fights. ellenberger should now call for the alves fight.

Oh yah Saunders is actually pretty good. I think Swick exposed him a bit though. I see Fitch squeaking out a decision via annoying wrestling/jabs to the face

Yeah but it’s a business. It’s almost like your rival taking the new, more important job while you keep yours and keep getting paid. You’re out of the spotlight.

Jake wants to fight, show his skills, and hopefully face better competition. His next fight isn’t going to be a step up now, who knows who he’ll get and when. In an organization where you could be cut for losing two in a row, or because your not exciting enough, this is certainly a kick in the nuts for him. People forget fighters easily. Especially to the casual crowd and when your not rocking a Mohawk, or tons of badass tattoos.

Dana probably would have said no to Ellenberger anyway. Like it or not, Ben Saunders has a bigger name at this point.

Why not give him Matt Brown and bump Almeida?

I saw earlier that if Saunders wins he might get a title shot, much to the chagrin of Kos and Semtex..but I am positive they have nohing to worry about, cause Ben stands no chance against Fitch. Period.

All’s that says to me is Saunders has better management than Ellenberger!
