Mir Says No Way Lesnar Could Beat Him, But Sounds Less Optimistic About Nogueira

(‘Poor bastard never stood a chance.’)

Frank Mir says it’s important for a fighter to be honest with himself.  Judging from his conversation with Michael David Smith at MMA Fanhouse, however, it seems more like he thinks it’s important to be honest with himself some of the time, when it’s convenient to do so.

Despite the fact that Mir’s bout with Brock Lesnar seemed to be going against him in the early minutes, he’s positive that he’d win a rematch.  Really positive:

"Brock Lesnar will never be able to beat me because he has no submission skills," Mir told me. "What’s he going to do, knock me out? No one has never knocked me cold. What’s he going to do, arm bar me? No way. He is powerful. He is big. But martial arts isn’t filled with guys from the NFL. Lesnar had to grab the cage not to get taken down by Randy Couture, who’s 220 pounds. Lesnar isn’t the phenom that everyone makes him out to be. He started at 30. Have you ever seen a boxer start at 30 and become a world champion?"

I’m not sure what Mir means by “no one has never knocked me cold,” but a quick look at his record reveals three TKO losses.  One of them was in 2006 against Brandon Vera, who hasn’t won a fight by TKO since.  Another was to jiu-jitsu specialist Marcio “Pe de Pano” Cruz, which Mir describes as his “pussiest moment.”

But whenever Mir talks about Nogueira and his chances in that fight, it really doesn’t sound like he’s quite as confident.

He told MDS that he’s been watching Nogueira’s old fights lately, and described him as “a great martial artist.”  His plan seems to be to win a decision, since even Mir can’t talk himself into believing that he can really finish Nogueira, who he says would beat Fedor Emelianenko in a bout with no time limit.

And how would Mir do against Fedor?  Here comes that honesty again:

"Fedor’s the best heavyweight in the world," Mir told me. "I hope one day I could fight him and do well, but right now he’s better than I am. As a martial artist you have to be truthful about yourself so you can approach your training properly and get better. Fedor has great killer instinct, he’s tough, he’s strong. If I fought him I’d try to catch him in a submission, but I don’t know if Fedor can be beaten. He’s the best heavyweight."

The good news is Mir will probably never have to find out whether he’s right.

MUCH RESPECT TO YOU FRANK BUT WE WILL JUST WAIT AND SEE HOW EITHER ONE OF THE WILL HOLD UP TO LESNAR COMING UP IN 2009. I THINK THAT LESNAR LEARNED ALOT FROM LOSING TO MIR. HE WILL BE MORE PREPARED FROM NOW ON. AND AS FAR AS NOG POUNDING LESNAR IN THE STAND UP. I DON'T SEE THAT BEING CLOSE AT ALL BUT YOU NEVER KNOW. I KNOW HAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, AND IT VERY WELL COULD HAPPEN. I JUST DON'T SEE IT AS LONG AS LESNAR IS PREPARED. I CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT THOUGH.

BROCK IS THE HEAVYWEIGHT KING, AND NOBODY SEEMS TO LIKE IT BECAUSE OF HIS WWE CAREER. AND WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT WINNING A TITLE IN 1997 IS THE SAME AS WINNING A TITLE IN 2008 WITH A STRAIGHT FACE. ARE YOU A FUCKING IDIOT. DID YOU READ THAT I SAID THAT, NO YOU DID NOT. I'D LIKE TO SLAP YOU WITH A LAME ASS SUBMISSION YOU DUMB PRICK, AND DON'T FREAKIN WORRY ABOUT ME TYPING WITH CAPS LOCK ON. IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT YOU FREAKIN DUMB ASS. Would love to see a rematch between Mir and Lesnar. Mr. Lesnar is not to be underestimated as a natural animal who is fairly determined, and Mr. Mir will definitely have to bring his game to another level this time around. I really doubt that he will catch Brock again so he better be totally ready for a tough, tough, fight.

What is up with all this crap, i think fedor is better than mir, you heard it here first

Can't pay too much attention to what any fighter says in an interview. Mir may seem like a douche, but I certainly admire how far he's come back after that devastating motorcycle accident. It takes a lot of character to work your way back to the top with that kind of severe injury. I'm very much looking forward to the Mir v. Nog fight. I'm fairly sure it will be one fine technical exhibition. I'm hoping for lots of hardcore submission attempts and miracle denials. Mir is right that Lesnar has no submission skills. Mir beat him once and would do so again easily. Nog would also have no trouble with Lesnar. Actually, Nog would pound the crap out of Lesnar standing up, too.

Frank looks like he just stepped out of an 80's disco-bar with that hair.
JD- December 10, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Hal,

Hate to break it to you, but nobody "praised" Couture after winning the title in his 4th fight. Nobody watched the fights back then, nobody cared about the sport, and the level of talent was no where near what it is today. Jesus, you are talking about how winning the title in 1997 is the same as 2008 with a straight face? If you won a fight then you were a top contender back in those days, the UFC struggled to get anybody to compete for peanuts.

Stop typing in caps and saying "lame ass submissions". Better get to bed tough guy, its a school night.
Goog- December 10, 2008 at 6:50 pm
^ Indeed, Hal. I don't know why so many hate Lesnar. Like I've also said before - nobody bitched when Shaquille O'Neal came in as a rookie and started dominating. They didn't tell him he should have to play five seasons before being allowed to play for a championship. He came in, started kicking ass, and everyone loved it. I fail to see how this is different. I like that there's actually some action in the HW division again, thin as it still might be. But yeah... Brock has some tools and is gonna be hard to handle.
Richard Wad- December 10, 2008 at 6:44 pm
I understand that Frank Mir does at times, sound like a douche. But if you watch any of his interviews or behind-the-scenes talks or tutorials, you'll see that he's intelligent as fuck. Not only in his outlook towards many things, but also his plans, his skill, even his goals for himself and his children. You might have to look through youtube or tht ESPN mma site thing a bit, but you'll see. He's a very smart and well-smoken man, even moreso as a mixed martial artist.
HAL .- December 10, 2008 at 6:33 pm
THANK YOU GOOG. FINALLY SOMEONE OTHER THEN ME TO KNOW THE FACTS. LESTNAR DOES HAVE ALOT TO LEARN, AND I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER THEN YOU DID. HE WILL LEAVE A PATH OF DESTRUCTION ON HIS WAY THROUGH. I'D REALLY LIKE TO SEE A MIR REMATCH IN 09 SO WE CAN ALL SEE HOW FAR LESNAR HAS COME. TAKE CARE GOOG.........
Goog- December 10, 2008 at 6:16 pm
Hal is right. I've said this all before, too. Big deal if Lesnar was paid to act a little in the WWE. He wasn't acting when he'd do a backflip off the top rope or body slam a 500lb Big Show. He's an athlete and a fucking great one. He legitimately beat the shit out of Couture, Herring, and Mir.

Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and several other franchise UFC guys have appeared movies, sitcoms, commercials, etc. Does that mean Randy Couture is just an actor who happens to fight once in a while? I mean c'mon... he just starred in a straight to DVD Scorpion King spin-off. Gimme a break! He's no fucking champion! He's an actor. That shit's all scripted! (sarcasm)

Brock has a lot to learn. And he's gonna leave a wide path of destruction while he's doing it. The guy's huge, naturally gifted, and works his ass off. I give him credit for already accomplishing what he has and look forward to seeing what else he has up his sleeve.

Yeah! Give me a t-shirt! Whooooooo!
HAL .- December 10, 2008 at 6:11 pm
NOW NOW NOW. FRANK COULD TAKE IT LIKE A MAN WITHOUT GETTING BITTER LIKE SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ONLINE DO. WHY DON'T YOU TALK YOUR SHIT TO BROCK'S FACE TOUGH GUY. I'D RATHER FRANK BREAK AFEW OF MY BONES IN FIVE SECONDS THEN TO HAVE LESNAR SCRAMBLE MY BRAIN FOR 85 SECONDS. HAVE A NICE DAY ANONYMOUS. SLEEP TIGHT, AND DON'T LET THE BED BUGS BITE.............
Anonymous- December 10, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Say this shit to Frank's face not online see what happens fuckers
ithertz- December 10, 2008 at 4:52 pm
mir's a pretty good fighter...he should just never open his stupid mouth. why is he talking about boxing? and wtf is up with saying nog would beat fedor if they fought without a time limit? i guess the ref would stop it after fedor broke both his hands on nog's face about 30 minutes into the fight.
HAL .- December 10, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Russell- December 10, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Mir makes some great points. I was really pissed when Lesnar grabbed the cage to avoid the take down.
