MMA FightPicker Update: Enter Your Pools Now for ‘Florian vs. Gomi’

Another big week on MMA FightPicker is in the books, and would you believe that Ben and Ben ended up tied for 2nd place (along with Geriatric Peon) in their pool? I guess that’s what happens when you make the exact same selections. Who knew. Celebrity guest-picker Roy Nelson did about as well, and we applaud him for predicting Ricardo Almeida‘s win over Matt Brown, as well as the lack of an early stoppage in St. Pierre/Hardy. Speaking of Nelson, Big Country makes his next Octagon appearance this Wednesday at UFC Fight Night 21: Florian vs. Gomi, which goes down at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte. The event will be broadcast on Spike TV at 8 p.m. ET/PT, and will lead in to the season premiere of TUF 11.

How does this affect you as a FightPicker player? Well, you only have until Wednesday afternoon to enter this week’s pools and make your selections, so get your e-asses in gear and make it happen. There are no prizes up for grabs this time around; we’ll announce the winners of last week’s iPad pools as soon as we have them. Let’s take a look at the questions that are currently in play…

– ‘Fight of the Night’ will be awarded to…a main card fight or a preliminary card fight?

Not so easy, huh? You’ll have to pick boldly if you hope to earn a spot on the leaderboard. Aaron Rampey is close to breaking the 3,000 chip barrier, while nismo17 is gaining ground at an alarming rate…

ghost, danomite>> Look at me--i'm an effing moron. Seriously, i've been watching UFC since 1492, when they had a spartan versus a ninja, and i know i've seen that rule before, but i just learned some shit today. Thanks to both of you.

I would guess that an actual piledriver would be illegal, but since Pellegrino wasn't holding his opponent, then Camoes essentially drove his own head/neck into the canvas?

i just checked the rules on UFC's website to see if there was anything special about spiking a guy on his head if he has your back, as compared to piledriving someone like when marquardt got a penalty in the fight against leites, and all it says under fouls is:

18. Spiking an opponent to the canvas on his head or neck.

i think that what happened saturday qualifies under that description.

correction: i think that was one of the only things marquardt didn't get points deducted for doing.

@aarondramp - can you show me how to win at gambling please? Other than picking the winner.

@Rex13 - "spiking an opponent to the canvas on the head or neck" is a foul according to the UFC website.

@danomite - I agree it was a late stoppage, and I agree on the head spike. It seems like a lot of rules go un-enforced because of the "I was trying to finish the fight" excuse, strikes to the back of the head coming immediately to mind. There needs to be a little more pressure to follow the rules. I'm not sure how exactly though. I'm inclined to say be more liberal with deducting a point, but losing a point seems kind of silly if the headspike results in a broken neck and the guy is being carried out on a stretcher.

I understand that attacks to the spine are illegal, but as far as i know, you can piledrive a fool if you want to.

@danomite - I agree that it was late stoppage - but not as late of stoppage as last Wed's Howard/Roberts fight, who's eyes were clearly rolling back into his head. Mir was face down which makes it harder for the ref to assess his level of consciousness. While I agree that Dan stopped it late, it wasn't so late that he should get fired. These things happen in this sport...

As far as the head spike from Pelligrino, I am not sure if that is considered illegal or not - I know on the UG they is a lot of talk about that. I'm no rulebook whore... IMO it's the ref's job to be knowledgeable about that stuff and enforce it - if it is in fact a rule violation.

completely off topic, but are we not gonna talk about how Dan Mirgliotta needs to be fired before he gets someone killed or permanently injured? do you guys not think that the carwin/mir stoppage was a little bit more than "fashionably late"? this wasn't an "oops, I was out of position" late stoppage, it was a "let me get my incompetent ass in here real close and watch this unconscious guy get hammered in the head with cinder blocks for about a minute" kind of stoppage.

can someone also explain to me how the head spike is somehow legal when your opponent has your back? how the fuck does that make sense? it happened twice saturday, and both times it was obvious that the guy was intentionally trying to slam the other guy on his head. Pelligrino could have paralyzed his opponent with that move. Even if somehow they weren't intentionally trying to spike the other guy and instead were trying to slam them on their back, its still a move that will more times than not end up with the guy's head being spiked into the ground.
