MMA Gif Tribute: 9 ‘Lawn Chair’ Knockouts

After Edson Barboza’s spinning heel kick KO over Terry Etim gave birth to the phrase “falling tree” knockout here on CP, we got to thinking, what other classifications of devastation existed in the MMA highlight-o-sphere? Debates got heated, egos got crushed, and limbs got mangled, but we were eventually able to agree that the next category of KO’s in need of appreciation was that of the “lawn chair.”

What is a “lawn chair” knockout, you ask? Well, it’s that special kind of knockout, perhaps the complete opposite of a “falling tree,” in which the victim’s legs give out from underneath them almost instantaneously after the lethal blow is delivered, often forcing their body to collapse into itself like that of a common lawn chair. And to add insult to injury, the poor son of a bitch often receives an unnecessary strike courtesy of his own knee on the way down. Here are nine of the finest examples, in no particular order.

Kickstand KO- Where some part of you body wont let the rest of your body fall. The Johnson-Mexecutioner KO from Sat, where he fell on his head and the rest of his body couldn't fall. Tank Abott-Nelmark. His head got wedge on the fence and he couldn't fall.

Nelmark was more of an 'accordian' KO, when the dude instantly dies and folds up into an accordian....and I'd say Dave Menne Vs Baroni is more of a 'man brutalized by an ape' KO.....also, is my computer really shitty? Why do all the GIFs on this site go retardedly slow, it doesn't do that for Sherdog...

Speaking of BJ Penn, this reminded me to look back at his fight with Din Thomas. Such a great mix of martial arts in one short, explosive fight... Too bad that one wasn't on Fox 1 or 2. What a waste. Casual Fox viewers will never see a man (BJ) hanging onto another man's arm (Din's) using only one leg while upside down.

Ha! I think it was both. A "FIT" KO is like a combination of timber and dead cow KO's, a rare sight indeed.

Yes, Struve should be at the top of the list due to dramatic folding effect. Nelmark a strong 2nd due to compact folding. Or whatever.

Fight between Abbott and Steve Nelmark ended with Nelmark contorted body being folded up before even touching the floor. Now that's tough to pull off:)

Would Tank Abbotts Knockout of John Matua count? How about as one of the most brutal KO's in MMA history. That fight is a good example just how much MMA in general has evolved, starting with the fact Matua goes into the Octagon wearing pajamas.
I'm not one to ask you for any favors CagePotato, but being that you are one of the(IMO) best or shall I say most enoyable MMA sites, how about doing top 10 best fights ending with repeated elbows to the head of a downed opponent, starting with Gary Goodridge turning Paul Herrera into Jesus Christ(anyone see another fight where a fighter got someone in a position like that?) laying down bone crushing elbows to the side of his face. Other memorable fight being Remco Pardoel vs. Orlando Weit's. Who could forget Remco almost putting Weit's head through the floor.

No No No. The Terry Etim KO was not a dead cow KO. It was a Frozen N Time KO. This happens when the persons switch is thrown while they are still standing.They are trapped in their last stance. Could also be a falling tree...but the Etim one was special ;)

I'd like to propose a new type of KO. The dead cow KO is when the victims arms/legs are still stiff and sticking up in the air. Evidence of this can be seen from the Pablo Garza v. Fredson Paixao gif above. The Terry Etim KO was also a dead cow KO.

Lawn chair KO, I like it.
