Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Most Misleading MMA-Related AP Headline Ever?

That headline is from an Associated Press story about a 25 year-old New Mexico man who died after being pushed through a third-story hotel window after he and someone else were, from the sound of it, drunkenly wrestling/screwing around in a hotel room.  You’ve been to this party before.  We all have.  You and some friends get drunk, decide to grapple with one another and possibly throw in a few knee strikes from the clinch, and it’s all fun and games until someone gets mad or takes it too seriously, which happens every single time.  Or maybe not.  Maybe it ends before that because someone gets pushed into a window, which then breaks, and suddenly you have a tragedy on your hands.

That’s a terrible story, but isn’t it just a little too misleading, even for the AP, to chalk it up as an "ultimate fighting" related accident?  Something tells me that MMA isn’t the culprit here so much as alcohol, cheap hotel glass, and bad luck.  If a guy dies while drunkenly racing his friend in his ’72 Nova, we wouldn’t say he was attempting to "re-enact" a NASCAR move, would we?

New Mexican in your pocket:.......1 bottle of patron, 1 prostitute, and $200.

AP reporter in your pocket..........10-year subscription to Playgirl, $2,000 a month.

The ability to have your business mentioned in a national "news" story at your very whim(for example: if you have a ho-hum fight card that should be on spikeTV but is on pay-per-view)....................priceless!

Yeah, but apparently the original article title was "New Mexico man falls to his death re-enacting ultimate fighting move. Gene pool safer than before."
Shatski- September 18, 2009 at 11:05 am
WOw the article was vague as hell. No mention of what they were doing. Even if it was like a tie up, that'd be more like wrestling anyway. It just said "pushed into the window." Maybe we should push to outlaw window now.

It kind of looks like that's a sign of popularity, though. It used to be that when someone got hurt or killed doing something stupid, it was blamed on pro wrestling. These days, the media take more notice of the "hot new thing" and blame MMA. My bad, I meant "ultimate fighting."

Typical media bullshit. When you see how misinformed there are about MMA, it gives you pause to think about all the other issues they might be misrepresenting.

It gets worse. The article says "A New Mexico man fell to his death from a third-story hotel window while re-enacting a move from the "Ultimate Fighting Championship." Ultimate Fighting Championship!!!!!

In capital letters!!! It appears the UFC has now copyrighted horseplay. Is there some sort of copyright infringement here?

It sucks because now everytime there is a fight related death or something, the country/media is going to portray it as UFC's fault. I hope dana will tear their ass a new one.

I blame it on the Hotel. Should've had better windows. Vegas has thick ass windows that don't open. I wonder why...

That old fuck from New York is right... this shit is dangerous and should be banned.
rh- September 18, 2009 at 10:21 am
I found it funny that it doesn't mention MMA, but specifically says Ultimate Fighting...I guess that's what overhyping yourself as the only MMA org that matters gets you.

EDoggFunkMonk- September 18, 2009 at 10:04 am
It was the "Bisping Opponent" move. He was mimicking a UFC fighter jumping to his death after learning he was matched against Bisping. Also called the "I have to drop a fight to that douche before you cut me from the UFC?"
Emo Sux- September 18, 2009 at 10:03 am
If by L ujltimate Fighter move" they mean pissing in someone's fruit, then yes, ultimate fighting is dangerous!!!
Viva Hate- September 18, 2009 at 9:51 am
See, I think it was a WWE move, I believe he went for an irish whip into the ropes/glass or was going to bounce of them for the "peoples elbow" but as he went for mometum some glass that was not up to grade gave way and splat, we now have a dent in the concrete filled with gazpacho.

Blame the WWE, they are more than likely the culprits I mean look how many kids have ended up wearing helmets, riding a short bus, eatin from rubber sporks because of their failed backyard wrestling dreams. Damn , AP always has to attack something they know nothing about obviously.

I guess Dana should feel a sence of awkward pride in that he's "branded" MMA the same way Kleenex has "branded" facial tissues.

Now I'm off to NFL-move my wife, NHL-move my neighbour, F-1-move my way to the office, and - with any luck - PGA-move 9 holes this afternoon.
One Two- September 18, 2009 at 9:28 am
"hey lets do that josh burkman move where i push you up against the cage!"

I also heard a guy at the party got arrested for re-enacting Clay Guida moves or as they called it rape.
J-Dog- September 18, 2009 at 9:24 am
Haha... the medial will spin anything to make it sound more spectacular. What a bunch of bullshit spun hype. Dana White should put the AP on his "to bury" list for that article.
Fight Fan- September 18, 2009 at 9:18 am
That depends...What was the ultimate fighting "move" that caused buddy to get thrown out the window?

If he was footswept outta there,
If he was doing the Lesnar charge and flew over the top of his friend and out the window,
If he started running while punching with his eyes closed like Forrest...

Too many other possibilities to mention here.

GEE-yuh-TEEN- September 18, 2009 at 9:17 am
Guys, this was clearly a WWF move. The one where Brock Lesnar gets slung against the ropes, only to bounce off and knock you out and piss on your sponsor.

Wrestling fans shouldn't be expected to know that glass doesn't bounce like those colorful ropes...

Hahaha, fuck....One Two, that's great
TrouserSnout- September 18, 2009 at 8:59 am
Somebody at the AP obviously doesn't like MMA....
