Mr. Superfight, Georges St. Pierre

(Yep. The flag thing again. Props: UFC)

By Anton Gurevich

Two weeks from now, UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will look to defend his title for the sixth time, squaring off against Jake Shields at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The fight will headline the stacked UFC 129, which will also feature names such as Randy Couture, Lyoto Machida, Jose Aldo and Ben Henderson on the main card.

Many fans see St. Pierre’s fight against Jake Shields as only a hurdle before “the real thing” — an encounter with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva, which has been labeled a “Superfight”, and potentially the biggest bout in Mixed Martial Arts history. Yes, there’s no doubt about how huge a fight between St. Pierre and Silva would be, but it definitely wouldn’t be the first “Superfight” in the French-Canadian’s career…

I can't get over the Forrest Griffin statement.. almost makes me think someone's trolling. Seriously, not one valid comparison can be made from that fight. Forrest isn't even that good, he looked like he was moving in slow motion in the Franklin fight I was watching that thinking "no wonder silva mopped these two up". GSP brings everything to the table that Forrest doesn't, AND I believe he's a better striker on top of that.

There's a lot of crazy talk in this comments section..

"GSP vs. Diaz, that is the superfight, not a sideshow like Silva vs. GSP."

wtf?? What planet do you live on that Diaz vs GSP is a bigger fight than Silva vs GSP?? I'm as big a Diaz fan as anyone, I love the guys style and attitude in the cage.. but he would be a massive underdog against gsp, kos, fitch, and any other ufc wrestlers. Two utterly dominant ufc champions fighting is a superfight dude, GSP vs Diaz is a regular title fight in comparison.

"How the HELL can GSP bring down Silva? Am I the only person on the planet who saw the Silva/Forrest Griffin Fight?"
Again.. WTF!? There are so many reasons not to compare GSP and Forrest I don't even know where to begin. Not to mentino Forrest did not attempt a single takedown.. not that he's known for takedowns anyway.

I hope that Jake "Butterlips" Shields takes the title!

When I read this:

"At least in my mind, Shields is #2, below St. Pierre and above Anderson Silva..."

... I nearly spit my coffee on my keyboard. That article is either a clever bit of trolling or a the product of some serious delusions.

So according to this article, GSP vs Jake Shields is a superfight. Do superfights normally have 5-to-1 odds?
Nut Puncher 9000- April 14, 2011 at 8:41 pm
I wonder if fans would be seeing GSP as such a monster if the fight was set to be GSP/Hendo.

Do I feel like GSP has the ability to win? Yes. Do I think he will walk through Shields like he did Penn? No. GSP has failed to finish his last three opponents and giving that much time, I find it hard to imagine a scenario where Jake will be unable to get a hold of him at some point...

"How the HELL can GSP bring down Silva?" - Yushin Okami? Chael Sonnen? Travis fucking LUTTER?

Y'all are tripping balls if you think Silva is some untakedownable demigod creature

Anderson Silva is a legend. But, after seeing what Jon Jones has done I would have to weigh in on the side of Jones in this potentially huge "super-fight", as the kids say. Anderson would of course have a shot at a flash knockout if he can counter Jones' range and dynamics but I see this most likely ending in a TKO for Jones by one way (slippery and creative take-down into Brandon Vera-like face smashing elbow for instance) or another. It would be an amazing fight though and I would much rather see this than see St. Pierre dry hump Anderson to a decision (save for a chance Triangle from Anderson or uh...flash knockout utilizing his natural, near dance of lanky destruction.)

It is all pre-fight hype. Did everyone forget that Sheilds bearly beat Martin Kampmann? Did everyone forget the first round of the Dan Henderson Fight? The only reason he beat Hendo is because Hendo gassed due to the weight cut. Jesus Christ. Also, the Silva GSP fight is never going to happen. GSP stands a big chances of getting destroyed. He won't take the fight unless there is a lot of money on the table. He stands too much of a chance of tarnishing his flawless image by testing it against Silva. How the HELL can GSP bring down Silva? Am I the only person on the planet who saw the Silva/Forrest Griffin Fight?

Finally, who can beat Jon Jones? The answer is Anderson Silva.

So I actually went to Lowkick this time and read the whole thing. This article lost all credibility after this little tidbit: "And if there's someone in this Solar System who can wake up the MMA fans... it's Jake Shields."
Obviously the author of this article has never seen Jake Shields fight, and loses all credibility.
Turd Furgeson- April 14, 2011 at 3:40 pm
Is everybody at lowkick as dumb as this guy?

I'd rather see Silva and Jones punch each other a lot than see GSP try to lay on Silva the whole fight.
Smitty- April 14, 2011 at 3:23 pm
Bones..........Edit button please assholes!!!!
Smitty- April 14, 2011 at 3:22 pm
@ HardKnockLife
What are you talkin about dude. Silva TOTALLY said that he'd go up to 205 for the right fights. Anywho......I'd like to see either of the "super fights" mentioned. You're not a real fan if GSP/Silva, Silva/Bons, GSP/Diaz don't appeal to you (IMO).
Remsaa- April 14, 2011 at 3:18 pm
Shield's best chance is to lay on GSP for 5 rounds. Just like he did with Miller (who was .02 secs away from being subbed at the bell), he won't be able to strike or sub for fear that GSP will stand up.

Sadly I feel that this will be 25 minutes of "Who's the catcher?" with GSP doing most of the "pitching"....

nohomo

ok a little homo
HardKnockLife- April 14, 2011 at 2:59 pm
It won't happen...
DW has since back-tracked calling it more of a fan's dream, and even Big Nog recently hinted Silva might want to move up to 205 to fight Jon Jones (which if you remember before Jones' win, at the time of this superfight non-sense, Silva had no interest in moving up).
I'd much rather see a natural WW stay at WW.
GSP vs. Diaz, that is the superfight, not a sideshow like Silva vs. GSP.
RwilsonR- April 14, 2011 at 2:56 pm
After Bones' recent dominance, I'd rather things play out like sevvi suggests.
sevvi- April 14, 2011 at 2:48 pm
I thought it was a decent poster from UFC standards. I kinda like it.
Uppercut Magnet- April 14, 2011 at 2:35 pm
Wow what a horrible poster...
sevvi- April 14, 2011 at 2:34 pm
I for one hope that mr GSP stays at WW and keeps winning and secure his legacy. Silva can go up and meet "Bones" at LHW for all i care.
