Insane Capoeira Knockout – Watch more Funny Videos
Most evidence seems to suggest that Brazilian dance-fighting isn’t very effective in an actual MMA match. But the doubters were proved wrong on Saturday night, as a Capoeira practitioner named Marcus "Lelo" Aurelio (not to be confused with Maximus) scored one of the most epic knockout-kicks in history at a North American Challenge event in North Vancouver. Aurelio’s opponent Keegan Marshall was clearly unprepared for the whirling-dervish routine, and let his hands drop at juuuuuust the wrong moment; the devastation comes at the vid’s 0:31 mark. After checking to see if Marshall is still alive (he was), Aurelio commemorates the moment with a victory dance that lasts about as long as the fight itself. Enjoy it, buddy — these kinds of things don’t happen very often.

Ok I get that you wouldn't want to rely on this happening, but that this happened isn't a complete shock. You're the other guy and you're faced with: a) weird angles b) different distance c) a style you didn't train against Sure - if you're an agressive fighter you close the distance and go to work. But if you start to second guess yourself, live in his range not yours, and get too defensively minded, you get KTFO. Crapping all over a whole style is ignorant. We can learn something from anything.

Looks about the same level. I would have shot for a takedown, probably ended up with an over and under with this guy. I'll tell you who I think the perfect opponent for this guy is: Kyle Maynard. Aurelio would be doing all those kicks and spinning punches that would sail harmlessly 3 or 4 feet over Kyle's head and Kyle would scuttle over and arm-bar that freak. Either that or somehow one of those kicks would land somehow and we would get to find out exactly what the ruling is when you punt your opponent into the cheap seats. Either way we win.

Yes, Capoeira proved superior, but notice he didn't do any of the stereotypical stuff that condemns Capoeira into the "it's just for dance, that'll never work in a real fight" mentality, as you see in movies. This Capoeira guy "kept it real", adapting a more orthodox footwork up until the point he recogized a weakness/blindspot in the challenger...THEN he let loose on the Capoeira footwork when he saw an opportunity. Had it not worked, the position he was already in would've allowed for a brief escape and rethink another attack...it's not easy pinning down a Capoeira guy when they KNOW what they're doing and KNOW the potential in their challenger...hence most know to NEVER turn their back towards a grappler for that very reason and rely on speed to counter such advances. The Grapplers vs Strikers saga has been going on for generations and will always make its way into the fighting arenas for generations to come...grapplers for the most part win hands down (especially when already on-ground). The ONLY exception being if a striker that knows EXACTLY how to counter-attack before the distance is closed-off entirely and either a) counter-wrestle out of it (and hope you're as good or better than the guy restraining you so you can slip out), or b) have a "magic strike" lined up somewhere to get out of the hold (which I have yet to see in 20+ years...how can you strike when you're being restrained). On your feet..."almost always" the better-striker wins for as long as they can keep the grappler away from knocking them onto their backs. Capoeira in itself is quite effective. Only other striking-art that proves superior/lethal and hard to do a take down, is Muay Thai. In the grappling world for near-inescapable grabs, is Brazilian Jujitsu, and Greco-Roman wrestling. There was another wrestling form I can't recall that is also effective, but that was a bit more counter-based rather than direct-offense.

As someone who has studied capoeira and is a big fan of it (no i don't think im a capoeira guru or anything) it's a little anoying to see so much hating (it's no good in a real fight) for it by so many. So i just thought id throw in 2 little known facts. one. the founder of the most widley used style of capoeira put out a challange to any fighter of any style so that he could justify capoeira as a real martial art, and never lost a match. two. capoeira was used by the rebal slaves of brazil to fight actual armies, with muskets no less Im not saying it's the gratest fighting style on the planet, but underestimating it is not a smart move, nobody remember the first rule of war? never underestimate your opponent?

Firstly, I think that everybody here that had a suggestion on how the owned dude should have worked this out like going rough since the start. But what you don't see is that the brazilian dude HAS started roughly. Of course, he needed space for his dance, but from the start until the end, he was very swift and precise. The other dude did not have ANY time to react. If he tried to be faster than the brazilian guy, there was a chance of the brazilian countering his move and ending the fight even more quickly. Depending on how intense and precise your attacks are connected since the start, a quick win is almost guaranteed.

Everyone saying 'a grappler would f him up' etc is really saying, if the other fighter can move from the effective range of the style of his opponent to one which in which their style is more effective, they would win. Well no kidding. Just like if the Capoeira guy could keep this unfortunate fellow at (long) range, he could win. This is style vs style - old school baby. Still makes sense in a modern MMA world unless you and your are opponent are exactly effective at every skill as the next. Of course it's a little more complicated ;)

There is another video floating around that shows a Capoeira "Competition". But when a real fight breaks out, no one uses Capoeira, they start throwing punches and kicks like any bar room brawl.
