MMA Video Tribute: 9 ‘Falling Tree’ Knockouts

Must-See: Manny Paquiao vs. Ricky Hatton

All that hype, and it only came down to six minutes of utter domination. If you caught the light-welterweight title fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton last night, you saw more proof that Pac-Man is one of the best boxers to have ever lived. The video is above; watch as Pacquiao opens with a 10-7 first round on the strength of two knockdowns, then delivers the finishing blow at the end of the second. Pac’s trainer Freddie Roach had predicted a third-round knockout via left hook, explaining later that Hatton tends to leave himself open when he throws his jab. Turns out, Pacquiao is even better than he thought. Could Money Mayweather be next?

I was a little on the fence calling Pacman the p4p best at this moment but watching last night he just passed Mayweather.

Lampley and Merchant are a great broadcast team. They make fights seem like significant events without being overbearing like Mike Goldberg, Gus Johnson or Mauro Renallo. I'd love to see them call a big time MMA fight. It's too bad they are both too curmudgeonly to give MMA a chance ... and it also sucks that Lampley is such a scumbag.

it was 6 of one, half a dozen of the other i thought. Pacman has mad skills but then they were only heightened by the fact that despite being told over and over not to rush in, Hatton still did it. Basically sacrificed himself to some heavy shots, which left him dazed and confused, and then left pacman with plenty of time and space to pick the devastating finishing punches. I'm more disappointed with Hatton than impressed with Pacman, not to say that he isn't a serious contest for the best p4p boxer, but that fight didn't exactly give him the chance to show it, cos Hatton went out there both over confident and too aggressive.

Pac-Man is the truth. It says something when the p4p best in boxing puts on a more entertaining 2 round fight than the supposed p4p best in MMA does in a 5 round fight. Anderson should be as concerned with putting on a fight for the fans as Pac-man was.

Manny looked awesome but Hatton looked like a guy trying to take a dive. No head movement at all and hands held at chest level or below. WTF was that about? Believe me, I know all about how heavy your hands get after a few rounds, but not in the first and second! Get 'em up by your chin for fuck's sake! That dipshit must have watched Raging Bull too many times and thought he was Jake LaMotta. And Manny obviously was watching some vintage Tyson with that monster hook coming all the way from his hip. A true wrecking ball of a shot. Hats off to Pacman. I weigh 217 and I would run like hell if he was coming after me! (Well, OK, waddle like hell!)

Manny is doing everything Mayeather Jr. has done, but doing it better! Pretty Boy took De La Hoya the distance and beat him with a split decision over 12 rounds, Pac-Man crushed De La Hoya in 8 and made him quit before the 9th. Floyd then took on Hatton and knocked him out cold in the tenth, and as we see in the video, Manny did it in two. Now, Mayweather Jr. has gotten in on this one-up battle and is going to be fighting Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18th. Paquiao had two epic battles with a TOUGHER than nails Marquez, the first ending in a draw and the second he won in a disputed split decision. It will be interesting to see what Floyd will do against Marquez and if he can pull a one-upper and do it better than Manny did. I really think it will be one hell of a fight and if Floyd is treating this fight with Marquez as a tune up to get at Manny, he'd better watch out! Marquez 'aint no joke and showed that he can shine in the ring with the best of the best. If Floyd does succeed in beating Marquez and pulling the one-up, the match with Manny is a no brainer and could be one of the greatest fights in history! Mayweather Jr., Pacquiao, Marquez, Calzaghe, Mosely, and a few others are the only thing keeping boxing afloat. MMA is the world's greatest sport but fighters like these are what get me to come back to boxing every now and then.

Pacquiao is amazing, but I'm more interested in seeing the PPV numbers than anything else. Some estimates I've seen tossed around place the fight well below several of the UFC events from the past year. At some point, don't networks such as ESPN have to cover MMA events on SportsCenter if they're going to continue to cover boxing matches that are watched by fewer people?
  18. Ninjay Says:

    Sun, 05/03/09 - 10:35

I highly doubt this got less PPV buys than a UFC event. I would bet good money on it if you take the overseas money into it. All the people buying it in the UK, all the people from the Philipenes, plus the old school boxing fans here in the US. I think boxing is dying quickly and love MMa but i still purchased last nights fight. They wouldn't be able to pay these fighters what they do if they didn't have the PPV buys to back it up.

  22. snd_dsgnr Says:

Taking overseas buys into account would almost certainly swing the balance in favor of boxing; but SportsCenter, as far as I know, isn't marketed to the countries that push boxing ahead numerically. I was talking specifically about domestic buys, since it would primarily be domestic viewers that American media would be concerned about.
  23. Jay Smith Says:

    Sun, 05/03/09 - 11:12

@ Truth2Pwr That's how Hatton always fights. He wasn't trying to take a dive. That's why it was so easy for Freddie Roach to put the game plan together that he did, and also predict a 3rd round KO. Hattons aggression and toughness had always carried him through his other oponents, but Pac Man is in a league of his own. He's not affraid to stand in the pocket and trade. If Mayweather wasn't so scared to get hit, maybe he could have finished Hatton a little ealier. And that is also why Pac Man will beat Mayweather.

  29. well Says:

    Sun, 05/03/09 - 11:51

only because they let you back up. if they let you get back up from a knockdown in mma, the smaller gloves would obviously cause more damage. the big fat gloves themselves is the other reason boxing is more dangerous. they soften the blows so it's far harder to one shot a guy. sure it happens, but they usually have to be more precise and usually you get KO'd after taking 800 million punches to the head. You don't sound like you know what you're talking about

@ anonymous, Boxing is deadlier than MMA. Simply because you get hit in the head many more times than you would in an mma match (usually). Science has proven it is way less safe than MMA. That doesnt mean its a better sport. Boxing used to be cool. Now its not really at all. Notice how there is like no pay-per-views now for boxing nor HBO events. By the way, change your fucking name noob. What are you scared about leaving a comment that you gotta have anonymous under your name? Dumb ass.

Marquez knocked manny the fuck out when they fought. Manny refused to fight marquez and instead chose to fight the weaker slower ricky hatton. now marquez is set to fight mayweather and then the winner of that will probably fight pacman. Bottom line is that manny better pray that pretty boy floyd wins that fight because marquez is a fucking beast. Watch Marquez vs. diazif you have a chance. It was the best fight in the last few years and it was only about a month ago.

Hatton fought the same way he always fights....like a agro bar brawler. Don't get me wrong he was really good at that and he would knock people out but you have to evolve and always fine tune your technique. Mayweather tought him as best he could but hatton couldn't help but be the old hatton and not a better boxer. poor guy. ps - Boxing rules! and if you are a mma fan you should love it. Just like you should love watching K-1 matches. MMA is a mix of everything and if you aren't good at one aspect of it you will get exploited and fucked up. FUCK ALL BOXER HATERS
  38. Count St. Germain Says:

Hatton is a chump. As mentioned above, he's an overhyped creation of the UK media since they lack real star athletes in any relevant sport besides Beckham and he's washed up. Pacman destroyed Hatton and I hope he takes out Mayweather next. And, "SCM" your berating of "anonymous" for not using some dumb handle is moronic. Like SCM isnt as anonymous. Not to mention the fact that anyone could use someone's "name" to misrepresent them on this site, as is often done. I guess you are the "noob". Nice "epic fail".
  39. MKO Says:

    Sun, 05/03/09 - 01:25

I have always been a huge fan of boxing, but this is what is wrong with boxing. There was no shock in the outcome of a fight of the best p4p guy in the world against a hyped brawler with no head movement that looked like he had never even seen a southpaw. This is the second wasted fight for Pacquiao, coming off his destruction of businessman/boxer de la Hoya. All this hype, and Mayweather will retire after the Marquez fight. Again, gotta give credit to the UFC and Joe Silva for (mostly) putting the top fighters against each other. And I guess I can excuse the uninteresting, over-hyped Penn-GSP...

  41. abnormal Says:

    Sun, 05/03/09 - 01:45

I'm not sure where you get your fight info or what fights you were watching, but Marquez never, "knocked manny the fuck out" as you say, or even knocked him down for that matter. Manny knocked Marquez down three times in the first round of the first fight that ended in a draw. And it was later found that one of the judges admitted to an error on his scorecard for the first round that lead to that fight being called a draw. Without this error Manny would've won the decision Then Marquez was knocked-down once in the third round of the second fight and that was what sealed the win for Manny in that close fight. For sure, they were extremely close fights, but it was these knock-downs that made the difference for Paquiao. I would have loved to see a third match between them but Pac-man instead chose to move up to fight David Diaz at 135 and Marquez also moved up and challenged Joel Casamayor. (awesome fight, by the way) No Doubt that Marquez is a monster, and i think Mayweather Jr. will definatly have his hands full especially after coming back from a long layoff. I don't think that Manny was really ducking him, but instead was looking to move up to the bigger pay days which he got fighting De La Hoya and Hatton.

I don't see why people hate on boxing so much. If you like mma, why can't you enjoy the technique of boxing since boxing plays quite a role in the training for mma. Sure it can be more boring, but these guys try to perfect that aspect in the fight...and to me, it can be very entertaining to watch that. I agree that mma will continue to rise well above boxing in the future, but I guess I just feel I will keep respecting and enjoying the older sport just like I enjoy judo matches or muay thai matches.

It still doesn't have the multi-dimensional aspect MMA does, but I've never seen an MMA fighter throw punches that well.
