Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller Booked for ‘UFC on FOX 3′, May 5th in New Jersey

The UFC confirmed this morning that their third FOX show will take place May 5 at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. Though it hasn’t been officially marked as the headliner, a high-profile lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller will be featured on the main card.

Diaz is coming off a three-round domination of Donald Cerrone at UFC 141 — arguably the greatest performance of his career — making it two wins in a row for Diaz since he returned to lightweight last fall. Meanwhile, New Jersey native Jim Miller bounced back to the win column last Friday with a first-round submission of Melvin Guillard, proving that he still belongs among the division’s elite. Though the fight probably isn’t a #1 contender’s match, it’ll certainly bump the winner very close to a title shot. Fun fact: In 27 combined UFC fights, neither man has ever been stopped.

Also returning to the cage on May 5th is TUF 14 bantamweight winner John Dodson, who will be dropping back down to 125 pounds for his first post-TUF appearance. His opponent will be Darren Uyenoyama, who will also be dropping to flyweight after outpointing Norifumi Yamamoto in a bantamweight bout during his Octagon debut on the “UFC on FOX 1″ undercard. We’re pulling for Dodson here, just so we can see the victory celebration.

I have an awful feeling that Bendo will beat Edger (heartbreak!) and then Diaz will beat Bendo (double heartbreak!).

Yeah I figured this would happen after Jim subbed Melvin. I agree with Aaron B that Miller will look to grind this one out on top but Jim is also really dangerous grabbing subs so Nate will have to be careful. If Nate can keep this fight standing Jim could get frustrated and lose a decision, or Nate could oblige with the grappling and we could see a grappling war ala Miller-Bocek. Really close fight to call but I think Nate may pull out the decision.

Miller will take him down fo sho. But if he keeps that Joaquin Phoenix posture when Nate is going for submissions, he may get caught like water boy Pellegrino. Diaz more often than not finds a way to win and is a more exciting fighter. War Nathaniel!!

I agree that Miller is a superior fighter to both Stevenson and Guida. I just think he possesses the wrestling pedigree to stifle Nate Diaz.

I think that Nate is too well versed in Sub defense to get caught by Miller. However I can see this being a case where Miller can top control a decision here.

@Aaronb; The Diaz brothers have spent a lot of time sharing camp with Chael Sonnen, they have learned a lot about guys who just Dump and Hump aka Lay and pray. I wouldn't expect this fight to go that way at all I also do not believe you can compare Guida to Miller as Jim is just a finisher and Guida is a grinder. Just saying, all the respect in the world to the carpenter but ugh yeah.

The one weakness that Diaz's have always shown was against top control wrestlers.

I see Diaz/Miller looking much the same that Diaz/Stevenson and Diaz/Guida went. Jim Miller is a better version of those guys.

Diaz, yes - "to my surprise" dispatched Cerrone convincingly. He was susceptible to leg kicks. If Cerrone hadn't fought Diaz fight and it had gone to the ground who knows who would have finished. They are both good.

As for Miller, after last week I doubt Diaz can match the power Melvin landed. One the ground Nate is not same as Melvin and not so easy to submit.

Since Miller can't kick like Cerrone, can Miller get it to the ground?

On the ground ground, is Miller that much better that he can catch and latch down Diaz?

I think this will be a bit too much of a step-up in competition for Diaz. Miller should take this one, but an upset would really catapult Diaz to the front of the pack. Unfortunately for Miller, a win over Diaz doesn't move him any closer to a title shot.

After Melvin's 2nd straight 1st round loss by RNC, I was hoping they would feed him to Diaz - would have been a better match up for Nate.
