Nick Diaz Chokes, No-Shows for BJJ Superfight with Braulio Estima

Estima reacts to Diaz’s antics (Video: MMAFighting.com)

In a way, the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo got everything they asked for last night. When you contract Nick Diaz for a bout, you sign on for a fair amount of trials and tribulations; the Nick Diaz package extends well beyond his formidable fighting skills. The very behavior that spikes a promoter’s blood pressure draws media attention and fan speculation—added interest that may not exist were it not for the Stockton native’s puzzling behavior. It’s a trade off, a roll of the dice that you make in hopes that you get the best of both worlds–the amazing prize fighter and the polarizing figure. But there’s a problem with counting on a tortured soul unable to cope with the most mundane aspects of life: you can’t count on him.

If you haven’t gotten the sense that all did not go well for Nick Diaz’s BJJ superfight with Braulio Estima last night, let me spell it out for you: the bout didn’t happen.

It’s almost an exercise in futility to try and figure out why, but we can certainly try. Things seem to have started unraveling when Estima failed to make the contracted weight the evening before the bout. Though it’s clear that he wasn’t prepared to make 180 lbs on Friday night, the decorated BJJ champion claims that the weigh-in time was never clearly outlined. Rumors have Estima hitting the scales at 189 lbs, then renegotiating a catch weight of 185 lbs, though both the man himself and Diaz’s coach Cesar Gracie claim he hit the contracted mark on Saturday morning.

As for why Diaz no-showed, Gracie was less certain. “I don’t know,” Cesar told MMAFighting.com. “I know he was mad when he was told Braulio would not make weight last night. No one has seen him today. Braulio ended up making weight this morning.”

Making this turn of events a bit more glum is that Diaz had volunteered to donate his purse to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, but let’s go ahead and wipe that look of shock off of our mugs. This is par for the course with the elder Diaz, and if he didn’t play hooky for drug tests and press conferences and bouts, we wouldn’t be as interested when he actually does bother to show up. Fans were looking forward to a BJJ match that–on paper at least–was incredibly lopsided simply to see what sort of crazy antics Nick Diaz would get into; I’d say we weren’t disappointed.

Stay tuned in the days ahead for the Diaz chronicles to unfold. Something tells me he’s charging up his camera, fueling up his ride, and preparing a statement as I type.

Fuck that guy. He shows up to weigh in almost 10 over then tries to renegotiate and throw this charity shit in Nick's face. Nick's the name and the one with drawing power. This guy showed up and tried to fuck him; Diaz walked, case closed.

Listen to the announcers at the beginning of this video for the Rafael Lovato Jr and Lucas Leite superfight from the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, and tell me if you still find any reason for Diaz to be a no-show.

Since it turns out that Caesar Gracie admits that Braulio made the agreed upon weight and Diaz was completely at fault for the fight not happening. Could the promotion that was holding this fight sue Diaz?
ArmFarmer- May 14, 2012 at 8:07 am
Pretty clear cut. Nick is at fault. Off of the top of my head, I can't name a single fight that didn't take place due to an opponent coming in over. I'm sure it's happened, but I can name a whole list of fights that happened after a failed weigh in, and not one that didn't.

Sorry Karma, you lose on this one. If he didn't like the weigh-in agreement made after Braulio failed to make weight, he shouldn't have agreed to it. But agreeing to it and then just not showing up without even letting anyone know is a pussy move. Now we know which homie is scurred.

I don't get it . I would rather fight a guy that weighed in the day of the fight , especially if I got to weigh in the day before him . Nick had a whole day to rehydrate and put weight back on . Estima would have had a few hours . I would say advantage Diaz , but he still no-shows . Classy.

it's jesus from big lebowski! first i'm gonna fuck you on saturday, then i'll fuck you wednesday instead!
MorningwoodII- May 13, 2012 at 7:43 pm
Nick never went to school on how to give money to a charity.
MorningwoodII- May 13, 2012 at 7:42 pm
I'll bet the check to the charity won't be over weight!
CrushCo- May 13, 2012 at 7:01 pm
Karma, I'm not saying Diaz is a bad guy, I'm just saying that this sort of behavior is pretty common for him. He probably did cost some fans money, if they bought the ppv or tickets to the event hoping to see him. For those people, a little notice that he wasn't going to be there probably would have been appreciated, but that's not his style, and that's what this post is really about.
.
Also, Diaz hasn't always been so stringent about weigh-ins. When he weighed in 9.5lbs over the limit for his bout with Muhsin Corbbrey, Corbbrey still took the fight and got TKO'd for his troubles. http://www.cagepotato.com/cagepotato-stats-mma-weigh-failure-leaderboard/

So CrushCho is saying Nick Diaz costed nobody any money? Payed for the Charity costs.. and is still the bad guy in everyone's eyes... Alright. MorningWood if an opponent showed up that heavy for an MMA event the fight wouldn't even be happening with most commissions but this wasn't for a fight this was for a BJJ Event which has ZERO GOVERNING Body Thus people can get away with being douchebags. It's easy to make Nick Diaz the bad guy just less so when he's flipping the money for chairty? None of you find it suspect?
CrushCo- May 13, 2012 at 5:04 pm
FYI: Cesar Gracie says he's releasing a statement tomorrow. According to Layzie The Savage, Diaz is going to pay the charity out of his own pocket. https://twitter.com/#!/LayzieTheSavage/status/201822377187885056

Goddamn Karma you are my boy, and these guys are being dicks to you just cause they are YOUR personal haters, which I get...petty children envious of what YOU do.
BUT........how in blue fucking hell do you defend Nick motherfucking Diaz? He didn't just back out of a fight for some stupid reason, he totally fucked people out of money, he totally SHIT on a charity, and there is NO excuse for that, except that Diaz is a cunt! It doesn't matter that you like his style of fighting, it doesn't matter that you think hes right, cause you are GODDAMN wrong, and so is Diaz! It is time to call a motherfucking spade a mother fucking CRAZY ass spade dude, stop supporting this fucking psychopathic brain damaged burn out, he isn't worth your efforts or anyones else. He is a disgrace to MMA, to say otherwise is stupid, and fucking blind.
MorningwoodII- May 13, 2012 at 3:46 pm
Can we just get a ban on anything Nick Diaz related for the rest of the year?
MorningwoodII- May 13, 2012 at 3:45 pm
so Karma, if you heard your opponent missed weight the night before. You too would just not show up?
HaidaNation- May 13, 2012 at 3:21 pm
Cesar Gracie should have reminded Nick that Cesars Ancestors fought Giants back in the day...and won...in MMA. WTF Nick. Losing fans.
drainplugofideas- May 13, 2012 at 2:04 pm
Shut up Karma.
KarmaAteMyCat- May 13, 2012 at 1:57 pm
Darkside ladies and gentlemen!! Still a bad troll he'll be here all week!
Darkside- May 13, 2012 at 11:07 am
Karma's senseless nuthugging aside, since when do BJJ weigh-ins happen the day before? Every tourny I've ever competed in has been the morning of, and from my understanding, Estima came in at 180 (not overweight). Not sure if this was just due to something specific in their contracts, but either way, dude still made weight. This isn't a weight issue anyways, it's a "Diaz being Diaz" issue.
Chri534.- May 13, 2012 at 1:41 pm
Hey retard, he never made 180.
danomite- May 13, 2012 at 3:50 pm
according to braulio's video taped rant, he didn't make 180 on the day before, tried to get them to agree to 185, then made 180 the morning of the match, with Ronda Rousey as a witness. If you don't believe me, just watch the video at the FUCKING TOP OF THE ARTICLE YOU ARE COMMENTING ON.
Darkside- May 13, 2012 at 10:56 am
I guess we know where Diaz was after all. He was busy wiping his man juice off of Karma's chin.
Gladheateher- May 13, 2012 at 10:26 am
Diaz was there when Estima weighted in at the agreed 180lbs. Why he never honored his commitments, like a real man, is beyond logic. What ever happened to fighting anyone, dont be scared homie, 209 Stockton what, ID LIKE TO DONATE MY PURSE TO DYING KIDS.
thegorilla- May 13, 2012 at 10:26 am
Sometimes these things happen in B.J.J.
CrushCo- May 13, 2012 at 10:15 am
We bagged on Anthony Johnson for missing weight, then he and Vitor and the UFC made a deal that he weigh in later. He did and Vitor showed up as agreed. Now imagine if Zuffa cued Vitor's music and he just never walked down the aisle.
