Yesterday, we brought you the live scoop of EliteXC’s conference call. The main topic was Kimbo’s upcoming February slaughter of Tank Abbott, but Gary Shaw also announced they would be following their March 29th event with a show on April 26th in Hawaii. The March event features Frank Shamrock against Cung Le, and the April throw-down will likely see the return of Nick Diaz – exploding eye sockets and all.
“He’s had surgery on his eye to repair all that scar tissue, and I think that Nick needed a rest,” said Shaw “He’s doing the right thing for Nick right now, and we’ve encouraged him to rest as well.
“But I think he’s fighting on the April 26 card.“
“We eventually want to give him another shot at K.J. Noons,” Shaw said. “He gave K.J. Noons a shot. But not right back.“
You’ll recall that shortly after Diaz signed with EliteXC, K.J. Noons (Karl James to his mother) ripped his face open during their fight (November 10, 2007). Diaz was a heavy favorite, but lost via TKO stoppage after the first round. He was a good sport, though, as evidence by him flipping off the doctor and the audience, as well as shoving a camera on his way out of the joint. Noons celebrated at Fuddruckers.
Another possible fighter mentioned to face Diaz is Takanori Gomi, which would be a rematch. Almost a year ago the two had a memorable battle, with Diaz winning via submission in the second round. But the mary jane gods were not with Nick and he failed a drug test afterwards. The win was dropped a no-contest was penciled in by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Party poopers. Gomi is rumored to have celebrated at Pizza Hut.
Diaz is now 15-7 and looking to rebound in April. He certainly wants to avoid a skid like the one he saw in the UFC where he dropped three straight fights. Now if he can only control those bleeding eyes…
