Strikeforce held a conference call today ahead of its January 29 Diaz vs. Cyborg event in San Jose, and as expected Diaz proved to be the main of interest.
Overshadowing his upcoming fight with Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos were Nick Diaz‘s incendiary replies to the media’s questions about him turning down a fight with longtime nemesis Jason "Mayhem" Miller and his thoughts on the UFC’s welterweight class.
According to the Strikeforce welterweight champ, he feels that for the fight with Miller to happen, he would have to be offered at least seven figures and that highly-touted UFC fighters like Georges St-Pierre (who he thinks will be destroyed by his training partner Jake Shields at UFC 129) and Josh Koscheck are over-hyped and protected by the promotion.
Surprisingly, not one reporter thought to ask Diaz if he was high during the call.
Check out some of the highlights of Diaz’s diatribes after the jump.
On why he didn’t move up to fight Jason Miller when he fought above his natural 170-pound weight class several times in the past:
"I’d be happy to move up; I’d just like to be paid for it, you know? I don’t like how people try to say that I didn’t accept the fight with Miller because I was too small. I never said anything about that. I said, ‘If I’m going to go off-track, it’s going to screw with my season, screw with my whole year, screw with my capabilities fighting at 170 pounds, so If I’m going to do that, I would like to get paid in full.’ I’d like to have a reason for doing that. It’s not just doing it at everyone else’s convenience. I would like to get paid something extra — double, triple, something crazy for me to do that — to move up in weight and fight at that weight."
On whether or not he will consider moving up or down in weight the future:
"Moving up or moving down, I’d rather move down before. If you want me to move to a different class, let me move down if you’re not going to pay me more money for it. I might as well be moving down. That’s probably better. I’ll move up, but can I get paid for it? People see something great. Offer me a fight at 185 — offer me a big money fight and I’ll make it happen, but I’m not just doing it for free when I make the same money at 170 pounds. It’s more work — twice as much work. I never would’ve signed for that fight with Miller. They were talking about making me move [up in] weight. I said, ‘Tell his ass to get in fucking shape and make weight like I do.’ It’s fucking hard enough for me to make 170 pounds. He acts like he wouldn’t be able to do it. He doesn’t want to work hard like me; that’s the problem. So he could work his ass off and make 170 pounds…175 pounds or somebody can pay me a couple fucking million dollars and I’ll move up to 185 pounds and I’ll fight him. That motherfucker doesn’t want to fight me. Talking about [how] he wants to fight me every chance he gets. He’s got control of the media. I’ll fight at any weight. I’ll fight at 185 pounds. I’d like to get paid. Pacquiao’s making $40 fucking million, GSP’s making a couple millions dollars, and I’m over here driving a Honda because my shit’s breaking down."
On what he thinks of the UFC’s former number one contender, Josh Koscheck:
"I cornered a guy against Josh Koscheck. This guy had like two fights ever in his life and they worked it so he fought Josh Koscheck, " Diaz explained, referring to his Team Cesar Gracie teammate Chris Sanford who was 4-0 when he fought Kos who was 2-0 at the time at the TUF 1 finale, making his point moot. They made easy fights for these guys. These guys get six or seven easy fights – I never got any easy fights. I never had fights like that, so when you bring up guys like that to me and tell me they’re the best fighters in the world, it’s a fucking joke; it’s a joke to me. I never got anybody like that guy that I brought to fight Josh Koscheck — some guy that doesn’t even fight. He drinks…at a bar. We took him to fight Josh Koscheck one day and he didn’t even know who he was fighting. I never had fights like that. They might be good fighters now but I was here first and they are ranked above me now its like ‘let’s fight!’ you know? Make it happen. So when you bring up guys like that and tell me they are the best fighters in the world, its a fucking joke to me. Right now, what do you want? You guys are gonna rank that guy above me? I was an MMA fighter before the guy had any fights and now he’s the guy who fights for the UFC world title. Its fucked up.”
On how he thinks he matches up with GSP:
"I got here and I started fighting before most of them, including GSP. I was it first and I’m mad that they are getting [all the] recognition when I was here first. People think this guy is better than me and its bullshit. He fought Koscheck for five rounds. I just told you about Josh Koscheck, right? Why don’t we get to fight? What is that shit? Why are you saying it’s unavailable, because we fight for different companies? I think there’s enough money involved that they can organize that sort of thing. I think this is the best opponent for right now that I’d agree to. I want to fight GSP. But I think my partner will take him out, regardless."

@drano
The only thing I don't understand is how you think you contibute to cp. You can't make an argument for your opinions, all you do is insult fighters and other posters. The only thing you proved yesterday is that you are a crazy ass keyboard bully. I'm done with you quit stalking me

look tweedledum you were right, you "don't understand", we have established that you don't understand anything much less me.
Learn to spell contribute, before you can begin to use it in a sentence. I have had more contributions to this hub while shitting on Mruss than you have had in the 3 days you have been on here, go back to bloody vagina with your pal sandyvag and talk your stupid shit there ok?
I insult idiots LIKE YOU, because you need it, and you earned it.
I insult moron fighters like DICK Diaz cause just like you and your brain damaged friends, he deserves it. He's a fucking dumbass fighter just like you are a dumbass poster. You being his fan comes as no surprise, your both clueless fucktards.
I have yet to bully you, but I am sick of your shit as well, so if you can't handle the cage potato, and you can't handle me, you will find more people will agree with me about you and you will find that you cannot win. Move along little atheist.

I agree gsp would probably beat diaz, but I think nick would be the most interesting fight out there for gsp right now. At 170 at least.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
thats cause you are dumbass. You have proved recently how stupid you are, and here you are proving it again. I guess being a GODLESS fucktard will do that to you. You also have a problem understanding that something thats against a sanctioning body, and something illegal, IE against the LAW is 2 completely different things, again must be your lack of common sense, and most likely your education level. You must have been raised in Nick Diaz neighborhood.
you just proved my point there bro, its team Cesar Gracie who is doing the promoting NOT Diaz, diaz cant even speak clearly in a fucking interview...
its all garbled homie speak
And here is this nimrod the very next day talkin bout his fuckin Honda breakin down cuz he can't get paid!!
Here is is whining about "now that motherfucker fights for the UFC title" - so why did you pass on the opportunity you fuckin hippocrit?
He thinks "there's enough money" to make a Diaz-Koscheck fight happen as a co-promotion between SF and UFC?? SO HIGH!!!
This fucknut can't string two logical thoughts together in a row. Just plain dumb as a tack.
He thinks the fact that he was in the UFC before GSP and Kos makes him a BETTER FIGHTER? Tell that to Baroni! Tell it to frikkin Mark Kerr!
Aye que taco. My head hurt.
Every up and comer just like Koscheck beat Diaz.
I guess all those asswhippings and all that pot has made him forget that he was a curtain puller for the UFC.
Diaz is another brain damaged moron who spews shit on the internet and can't back it up.
Go back to beating cans in strikefarce Nick you couldn't beat your way out a wet sack if it had UFC stamped on it.
Not only does it "look" like Nick is ducking Mayhem, it is OBVIOUS he is ducking mayhem. Nick Diaz you are a pussy poser.
#1 the 309 weedbag being broke is his own fucking fault for being stupid. ya cant resign with a competitor orginization then start saying you could kick gsp ass if you were to fight him. (obviuolsy knowing it will never happen, just makes him look like he is trying to be a bad ass by talking shit)
#2 again Dick Niaz only making himslef look even stupider knowing SF isnt going to give him a couple of " fukkin mill" to move up to fight Miller ( his stoned logic at work here trying to save face for saying he would fight at 185 , then back pedaling out of it ).
@ PerpaTraiter
Nick diaz a great self promoter???? are you fucking high?????
you need to find nick and share some of that shit that youve been smoking
Nick couldnt promote a wet fart to a roll of toilet paper.
the one who is great at self promotion is Mayhem, why you think he has a fucking tv show (more than likely making him far more money than his fighting career)
if the fight was to ever happen i got mayhem winning
and shields beating gsp imho is another of dick Niaz's pipe dreams
"For the record GSP would smash Diaz's fucking face in. and I would clap my hands like a retarded kid getting a pudding pop."
You sir, about made me spit out my coffee at work. Well done. And I also agree.
Scott Coker you retart poop sucker! Are you that completely out of touch with your fan base? Everyone in this damn comment section and every other one has an opinion on this and wants to see it!
@V.P.L.O.P - So Melendez, Shields, and 2 Diazs attack Mayhem simultaneously and do no significant damage. 4 on 1 + fail = Mayhem wins. That's how my math works. You can clown Bully Beatdown all you want, but Mayhem is making himself more marketable. Maybe if Nick could get over his tough guy image and lay off the green long enough to develop a personality he could figure out a way to fame whore himself into some million dollar fights, but no he is too busy throwing water bottles and cursing at reporters.
P.S. nothing wrong with driving a Honda.
Those numbers boggle my mind! Not just 'cause I'm blown, either. (Exhaling cloud of goodness)Well, maybe just a little. But let's just say Manny makes half that, it's still 20x more than the highest paid MMA guys. That's nuts.
In my opinion, the UFC brand is so powerful and pervasive that it holds a monopoly on nearly everyone's perception of what qualifies as legitimate MMA. It seems like all fighters who are not currently employed by the UFC fall into two categories: fighters who are consciously trying to angle their way back into the UFC (Gerald Harris, Paul Daley), and fighters who claim that they do not want to fight for the UFC (Fedor, Diaz, Barnett, retired Frank Shamrock) and make themselves seem unreasonable by claiming that the UFC is inferior (the UFC roster lacks depth, there are too many fighters trying to win by decision, the UFC protects their champions, Dana White is unprofessional and bad for the sport, etc.).
Dana White owns MMA. For the most part.
Nick made at least $50k (no win bonus was listed) for beating Noons.
hxxp://www.mmafighting.com/2010/10/11/strikeforce-diaz-vs-noons-2-fighter-salaries/
He fought 3 times in 2010, so that means he made minimum $150k not including sponsorships. If he's still driving a Honda, it's by choice.
Meanwhile, Nate's not even close to being a champion, and he still made $60k to beat up Marcus Davis.

So when Nick says "over here" what he means is "in Strikeforce." You want more money, then move up to the big leagues, homie. Otherwise shut the fuck up and enjoy your Honda.
