I like your view on things and I think this will become more and more the opinion of the sport of MMA if rules do not change moving forward. Judging is handled by comissions, I believe the "unified rules" of mma seem to be granted/set by the same comissions, Dana needs to force the hands of comissions.
I would suggest Dana invest in creating unified mma rules by changing the rules for his brand. I doubt we see the return of soccer kicks and knees to downed opponents like the glory days of pride, but perhaps we see a mandatory stand up if a wrestler is in his opponents full guard for over 60 seconds without advancing. Dana got 5 round non title fights done, he needs to start applying to have rules accepted in his fights that take away the interpretation or lack there of, of these judges who clearly do not understand what is going on in that cage.
For everyone who tells me Sonnen GnP'd Silva for 5 rounds, I tell them Silva controlled Sonnen inside his guard until he had the best opportunity to win the fight for 5 rounds. Jits is so sadly doomed when guys working on triangles are being stood up(Story/Brenneman).

Yes, in Pride the fighters would defend knees/kicks to the head while they're on the ground and such strikes are against the rules in the US, but I'm sick of seeing fighters game those rules by placing the palm of their hand on the mat or doing what Lentz did, which is purposefully not stand up simply because your opponent has gotten a better position then you from which he can deliver a solid knee. Jesus, the rule-manipulation that goes on in the UFC is why we're stuck watching so many three round wrestling matches go to wrestling decisions.

These fights aren't even wrestling AND striking matches in the minds of the judges, they're just wrestling matches. The Munoz-Maia decision is a prime example of this bullshit.

Whether the rule should be changed or not is beside the point. In Pride they were legal, so you'd expect them and have a shot at defending. In the UFC where they ARE illegal, they are unexpected.
