No Shaw’s and Very Little Excitement for Elite XC

So Robbie Lawler is clearly not into doing this interview with MMA Rated’s Ariel Helwani. That’s nothing new for the Elite XC middleweight champ. Media shy isn’t quite the term for how Lawler deals with the press. More like media contemptuous. But to hear Ariel tell it, Lawler isn’t the only one who seems unenthusiastic about this event:

We just came back from the EliteXC press conference at the Stockton Arena and the only word that comes to mind is “surprised.”

Surprised that there was virtually no media there. Seriously, maybe a handful…tops.

Surprised that the Shaws (Gary and Jared) were no where to be found. Surprised that no one is willing to give a straight answer as to where they are hiding. Trust me, I asked around. Surprised that there appears to be zero excitement online, around town or even in the local media for this event.

What’s going on here? Elite XC broke a major barrier with their first show on CBS, but now they’re on the verge of their second and already people are treating it like their grandparents’ fiftieth wedding anniversary party. Not that we’re saying this is necessarily wrong on the part of the media or the fans or even the fighters. We can definitely relate to those feelings. It’s just odd.

Is it bad timing, coming on the heels of the biggest MMA weekend of the year thus far? Is it the line-up? The promotion itself? The lack of a big media build-up? Lack of MMA lightning rods like Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano? What’s the deal?

Lawler and others are probably pissed they signed contracts with a dog and pony show like Elite XC. If you went on Saturday night Prime time and had anything besides the same bunch of garbage news specials and lame ass watered down sitcoms, you will see a ratings boost.

Carano is a decent fighter, but I think without a true represented female line up it's hard to say, but I'm pretty sure anyone that saw that Kimbo fight vs Thompson can agree to the "legitimacy" of EliteXC.

Actually, a lot of pros watch their sport. It's called research. It is a competition after all.

Those who play for the love of their respective game also watch because they actually enjoy it.

Still others do not watch for the reasons you cited, Shawn.

I meant 'pros.' Thank you.

It's not that unusual for pro's to watch anything other then the thing they do every single day. I've known hockey players that never watch the NHL because it reminds them of work. Then again, most people don't watch the NHL...

Yeah, I liked Lawler a lot more before I saw this interview. I hope he gets caught early.

Who doesn't watch the sport they take part in professionally?

It seemed like he just didn't want to answer any of the questions. Doesn't he realize the people watching these interviews and shit are the ones putting money in his pockets?

Im a huge mma fan and never miss an event. I cant stand watching the Elite XC because of the whole entire vibe. First off....dont have Steve Goldgerg in the ring after each fight. Second off.....they dont sound like they even know what they are talking about. The commentator has to be the worst ever......if i actually wind up watching it.....i mute my tv because it pisses me off. Their advertising is absolutely ridiculous and you never really hear about the fights at all. The only one that was talked about really was Kimbo and Tank. If they really want to draw in a crowd....lose the commentators and replace them with someone who knows the sport and also put your big name fighters up against other big name fighter. Kimbo obviously draws the biggest amount of viewers....put him up against someone decent that can actually show all of his many weaknesses!

i think all the questions you asked in your last paragraph are the answer, that and more.

EXC is a 1-man show

Whats with fighters not following the sport? Is that the cool thing to do? you wont ever hear football or basketball players saying i never watch basketball or football
ekc- July 24, 2008 at 7:02 pm
you just gotta ask him the right questions

here is an interview earlier that day

Robby Lawler is so fucking boring! I wanted to fall sleep during that interview. I hope he gets his face smashed in this time. Scott may sound like he had 1 too many balloons, but at least he is mildly interesting.

What's the deal? I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with the main event title holder not even paying attention to his own sport. Strange. But again, I dunno. I didn't even know it was happening again until earlier this week. Not nearly as much coverage and hype as last time.

Could it be that G.Money Shaw is actually better for the sport than we thought...?
