Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

NSAC Recap: Chael Sonnen Granted TUE, Nick Diaz Receives 12 Month Suspension

Anderson Silva Chael Sonnen UFC 117
(Negative side effects of TRT: Bacne. Positive side effects: Falcon Punch.)

My God. Today’s NSAC meeting, which determined both Chael Sonnen’s future ability to continue legally injecting steroids testosterone replacement therapy and Nick Diaz’s minimum retirement length was like watching Lawrence of Arabia, twice, minus all of the train explosions and shots of interesting desert landscapes. To describe the six hour hearing in a word: humdrum. Thankfully, we’ll be much briefer in summing up what went down.

To kick off the afternoon, Sonnen was successful in achieving a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy, and now joins the like of Dan Henderson, Todd Duffee, and Shane Roller in the select group of MMA fighters to receive an exemption from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. As far as interesting developments go, Sonnen admitted that he injected himself with testosterone, stating, ”I administer two times a week, every Sunday and Thursday. It’s self-injected intermusculatory and [I] consider it to be a prescription.” When Commissioner Pat Lundvall asked why Sonnen had never listed using testosterone on his medical forms over the past few years, Sonnen stated that he was under the impression that it wasn’t something that needed to be disclosed. He also stated under oath that he “has never taken anabolic steroids.”

In another interesting moment, which took place before the hearing truly began, Keith Kizer likened TRT to “the new Viagra” as doctors continue to push it on the population and that “Therapuetic Use Exemptions do not allow you to test outside of normal ranges. It only allows for presence of synthetics.” Does this make Sonnen TRT’s Smiling Bob? Only time will tell.

And with that, Sonnen was granted an exemption on the grounds that he will undergo several blood tests both before and after UFC 148 to monitor his injections. The commission then asked if Sonnen would help them as an adviser on TRT in the future, which he gladly accepted.

Let’s move on to Diaz, who, true to form, did not pull any punches when answering his questions. When asked approximately when he began smoking marijuana again after his 2007 hearing with the NSAC, something Diaz swore he would never do again during said hearing, Diaz admitting to smoking weed pretty much immediately afterward upon returning home. Twenty-four year old Dave Chapelle approves. But the main issue was not when exactly Diaz had started dating Mary Jane again, or how early he broke it off with her before his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143, but rather why he lied on his pre-fight questionnaire when he stated that he was not taking any prescription or over-the-counter drugs at the time. The argument Diaz and lawyer Les Grossman attempted to make was an old stand-by for Diaz: ignorance.

According to Diaz and Grossman, Diaz was not aware that his marijuana usage did in fact fall under the terms of either prescription or OTC usage, simply because Diaz did not think his medically diagnosed ADHD was serious enough to be listed on the questionnaire. Also, being that Diaz neither obtained his medical marijuana through a prescription or over-the-counter means, but rather through a doctor’s statement, that Diaz should not be held entirely accountable for his actions. Diaz stated that he often obtained his medical marijuana through other friends who also had physician statements (yeah, same here bro) or at cannabis dispensaries located near his home, whichever was more convenient. Diaz also stated that he was diagnosed with ADHD in the second grade, and that although he began smoking pot for purely recreational purposes, looking back, he considered it more therapeutic than anything.

Although the commission wasn’t exactly out to make Diaz look like a fool, and seemed more than willing to hear his argument, their deliberation was so short that I could barely step outside to help cure my own self-diagnosed eating disorder, if you know what I mean, before the ruling had been handed down.

12 months, and thirty percent of Diaz’s UFC 143 purse and bonus.

Combine that with Grossman’s substantial fees, and that sure doesn’t leave him a whole lot to retire on, so expect to see Diaz back in the octagon once his suspension is up. Hopefully he’ll show up for the fight this time.

Im all in with TRT cause not all men have the same genetics and this is one step further to have us all on the same level and not some with genetic advantage cause of freak nature.
If all people have the same ratio its more fair.
for a better analisis see joe rogan and eddie bravo

You've been smoking too much something.
Bones has freakish long arms and legs. That is genetics. So now what happens?

I like how all the Sonnen haters keep bringing up testosterone injections but leave out the tiny detail that he'll still need to come in at accepted levels. They aren't going to let him fight with a ratio like Overeem tested for, he's going to go into the fight with Silva at a ratio no higher than 4:1 or 6:1, whichever is the accepted range ... So who gives a shit?

I dont' really have an opinion on Diaz and his weed smoking, other than Weed is banned. Sure, Sonnen had an elevated T:E ratio, but what did he test positive for? It's not like they found anabolic steroids or some other synthetic bs in his system, and at least he didn't try and skirt the test with animal piss or piss from a dead person.

At least somebody here understands

WHAT!? A brown man gets screwed by the system and the white man goes free... unprecedented.

I totally agree, this whole thing seems ass backwards, I just really want to see Anderson get dominated. I feel for Nick though.. he's not a doctor, he doesn't work in corporate, he fights in a cage. Let the dude do what he wants with his personal time.
FilmDrunk- May 22, 2012 at 7:18 am
I hate Nick Diaz's bullshit excuses, but I feel like the NSAC is the only group of people on Earth who would punish an athlete for smoking weed while saying injecting testosterone is a-okay. Do we seriously need a hearing for that? Just poll 100 people, I guarantee 99 of them will say weed isn't performance enhancing.
ArmFarmer- May 22, 2012 at 6:34 am
Meh. If it in any way increases the chances of seeing anderson silva embarassed in a fight before he retires then I have nothing to complain about.

I'm really not sold on this Testosterone replacement idea. Isn't the point of having these tests that we find out what athletes are naturally capable of. Do men with abnormally low levels of testosterone often persue careers in competitive sports? It all seems suspiciously like bullshit to me.

Pot is a schedule 1 narcotic and is therefor orders of magnitude more dangerous for you and your body than juicing. My government tells me that pot has ZERO medical use, which contradicts a few thousand years of medical professionals opinions but they can all choke on dick cause my government would never mislead me.

Chael Sonnen is just awesome. He cheats, then he sweet talks his way into being an advisor to the people who caught him cheating. He's like the Frank Abagnale of MMA.

@Rogansroach: A doctor's statement is not the same as a prescription.

So Sonnen admits to injecting testosterone, claims he didn't know he had to disclose, gets asked to be on the TRT advisory board in the future, and fights for the title. Diaz admits to smoking weed, has a Dr.'s script, claims he didn't know he had to disclose, gets 12 months. Testoterone increases strength, and agression, weed increases need for water, and munchies. NSAC is only topped in stupidity by the person who wrote the article and couldn't resist letting his bias against Diaz drip down is leg. It's all just too pathetic. Take home lesson, talk loud say shit that isn't true, succeed. Be quite and introspective, fight like a warrior and fail. Hmm where else in the world do we see this. Oh yeah the genius's in the financial industry. Ok now it's all clear to me.

diaz gets 12 mo for smoking a couple of joints that do nothing to affect his performance, but sonnen gets to legally juice with steroids. if that douchebag somehow pulls of the miracle and lays on silva for 5 rounds without finding his way into another triangle, i'm done watching mma.
HandsofGold- May 21, 2012 at 5:11 pm
lol know your not you will be watching the next one don't lie to yourself man. haha
HandsofGold- May 21, 2012 at 4:43 pm
I believe that his punishment would not have been as bad had he not came at the NSAC with firepower. Those guys don't play around and i'm sure they where ready to stick it to him after everything. Sucks love watching Diaz fight. But honestly pretty stupid to smoke that close to a fight. He did it to himself. Sucks for the fans more than anything. I think.
holeeball- May 21, 2012 at 4:20 pm
This is so fucking over the top that I will actually buy Sonnen's next book: TRT for Dummies.

You ever seen the Natural Born Killer run a marathon... ON WEEEEED?
Chonde- May 21, 2012 at 4:00 pm
This is ridiculous. Overeem only got 9 months and no fine for using HGH to be bigger and stronger than his body is humanly designed for. Then he would use that size to inflict damage to an opponent. Diaz smoked some bud for a laugh and to relax. NSAC should be ashamed as should our government for condemning a harmless plant.
Goat- May 21, 2012 at 3:54 pm
12 Months? For WEED?! That's the stupidest thing I've read all day, and I've been checking out CP since this morning.
DangadaDang- May 21, 2012 at 3:58 pm
And we have a winner.
