By The Numbers: Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin

Now that the Brock Lesnar-Shane Carwin UFC heavyweight championship match is officially happening at UFC 106, we thought we’d go ahead and compare some key stats.  As you can see, they’re both around the same size (* denotes, well, that’s what he weighs in at, but probably not what he weighs on fight night), with about the same reach.  Carwin has more total MMA experience, but has logged less actual Octagon time.  They both have NCAA national wrestling titles, though at significantly different levels.

The big difference?  Number of successfully resolved feuds with Cage Potato.  The mental toughness and fortitude that a fighter gains from that baptism by fire is not to be discounted.

Carwins TOTAL fight time altogether is 32+mins, guess your just counting his time in the UFC in those numbers??? Very comparable in all departments no matter what thou. I gotta give the edge to Carwin, he has everything needed to beat Lesnar so heres hoping...

my prediction: carwin will get hurt. he is big and powerful, but that's it. he will be easily overwhelmed by lesnar's speed and aggression. brock has fought better fighters and will easily negate carwin's ko power. brock will take him down when he pleases and easy grind out an ugly victory and an equally ugly viewing experience.

it would be nice to these monsters stand and bang, but that ain't gonna happen.

Gonzaga took Carwin down FFS, how could Brock not take him down? I know Carwin was dazed from being battered in the face twice but damn, he got taken down with ease. Lets wake the fuck up here and just admit it, carwin is gonna get smothered by a superior wrestler and he's gonna get KTFO. Lesnar by GnP rnd 2

I like Carwin, I think he swings with bombs that can knock anyone out.
But to be honest, thats the only way he's winning this fight, is with one of those.
Otherwise, Brock is going to eat him alive.
I've seen the guys fights. You say he can ward off Brocks takedowns? You're crazy. Brock will take him down whenever he wants, and keep him there. Thats if he doesn't knock Carwin out first.
Seriously, Carwin COULD pull this out...but he's not going to.

There is not way Brock can losse this fight. Carwin is a legit containder I think but will get in a lot of trouble with brock speed and power.

Brock is here for a while, even though you don't like him, just admit it.

I think the only reason we have seen Carwin rocked a few more times than Lesnar is because he has twice as many fights.

I think Lesnar still has a size advantage, be it slight. I think if he can get it to the ground and keep it there, he will win.

If Carwin can keep it standing. He will win.
Chinstroker- August 21, 2009 at 5:15 am
I was looking forward to the Carwin/Cain fight as a build up for a Carwin/Lesnar fight, anda means to give Carwin more time to develop. Lesnar does have way more main event experience than Carwin, and I think that may be the decider in the fight. Both guys hit crazy heavy, and both will negate the other's size advantage, so if it's going to come down to who is more relaxed in the fight and able to execute better stand up accuracy then I reckon Lesnar will catch Carwin's chin first. It's also a good point that we've seen Carwin rocked a few times more than we have Lesnar.

*Carwin also trains in high altitude so he is a beastly man with very thin, oxygenated blood. I still cant wait.

Even if there was a huge difference, this is not college wrestling. Having 2 division champs in the octagon makes for a nice kickboxing match. Remember there's wrestling, then there's wrestling in MMA. I don't either will be on the ground for very long. And neither of these guys have fought a guy the same size, except Carwin got close with Gonzaga. (and he was 250 for that fight as well.) I can't wait. I'm pulling for a Carwin round 2 TKO, just so we can see Brock gas out.

Honestly, there isn't a huge difference between D1 and D2 in college wrestling. Or D3 for that matter. If you win a national title, you are an animal. If you look it up on flowrestling.com theres a match between the #4 ranked guy at 149 from a Big10 school against the #6 guy from nebraska-kearney, a d2 school, and they went three overtime with the Nebraska Kearney wrestler winning. A lot of it has to do with, can you handle working out for hours a day, every day, all year. D1 wrestlers live and breathe wrestling, not academics or other things. D1 and D2 guys do.
One more example. USMMA's 165lber this past year won the Academy games. The academy games includes all military academies regardless of division. he pinned his way to the finals i believe. so, i wouldn't count too heavily against carwin's wrestling ability.

BEN I prefer your "tale of the tape", do you think we can get Joe to announce it for us?
ReDx- August 20, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Sheps...

Carwin does not have double the fights Brock has inside the Octagon. He has one less. Career fights don't equal Octagon fights.

Whats up with your bipolar posts? You went from saying Carwin will destroy Brock to doubting him.

WAR LESNAR
Sheps- August 20, 2009 at 9:30 pm
You guys are forgetting that Carwin damn near got put to sleep twice in his fight against Gonzaga.

I want Carwin to win badly but don't be surprised if he gets knocked the fuck out, it is very possible.
Sneaky Pete- August 20, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I'd like to see how Cain stacks up against Lesnar. I was really looking forward to the Cain v Carwin gig, but I'd rather see them each take their turn at Brock 'Lunchbox' Lesnar.

I'm really curious to see how two well-versed wrestlers go at it. If Carwin uses Randy Coutures and keeps his chin out of reach of the canned hams, he'll win.

Does anyone here think that Carwin might be a victim of his own success, in that all of his UFC wins leave with very little experience in the octagon?
ktfo- August 20, 2009 at 9:01 pm
i heard in an interview, carwin cuts to make 265 as well
omunto- August 20, 2009 at 8:58 pm
I love "Official" heights... Bullshit Carwin is 6'3... I forget who it was but someone found some candid pics of Lesnar, Carwin and other UFC fighters side by side and yeah Carwin is not as tall as Brock... Just as capable of winning but I hate how fighters lie about their heights...
The Truth- August 20, 2009 at 8:49 pm
2 guys with this much power makes the standup almost a tossup. Its basically the first guy to get hit by a flying lunchbox on the chin loses.

What is scary is how when big guys fight each other, they are worn out in the first 60 secs just from tossing around someone who ways as much as them.
Dr Garbo- August 20, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Damn Cage Crapato...
Koeikan- August 20, 2009 at 8:37 pm
I will tell you this... this fight is going to be fucking nuts. I don't think this one makes it out of the first round.

Both guys are giant monsters with heavy hands. Takedowns could very well be nullified with 2 solid wrestlers (otherwise I probably have to give the nod to Lesnar...) with decent boxing (but with plenty of openings).

Carwin is very dangerous... I'm surprised that the UFC is not making him fight Cain first (who, if Cain won, I think is a safer match up for their HW star, Lesnar).
Silverobot- August 20, 2009 at 8:22 pm
was jk i know he lost 2 neal in 99

And fuck the fuckin Diaz brothers Fuck em all- August 20, 2009 at 7:53 pm
LMAO very funny posts, But seriously does anyone REALLY give Carwin a chance? anyone in T.O. area wanna take Carwin for a hun? shit we can even meet up at Hooters slap back a few then you can pay the tab when im finished???
Bare Grappler- August 20, 2009 at 7:43 pm
@ Silverbot----Lesnar wrestled in division 1 and Carwin wrestled in division 2 so they likely never wrestled and had different natl championships. Please think next time.

This is an awesome fight and both guys do not want to end up on their back so it will be stand-up mostly. I say one of the 5xl's of Carwin sneak right in between the 4xl's of Lesnar and Bud Light will have the greatest commercial of Lesnar sleeping on their logo.
KarmaAteMyCat- August 20, 2009 at 7:16 pm
@ SIlverbot I don't see any history in any search engine that shows proof that they actually competed against one another in college wrestling. PLease paste me yer source in which you have found said Record or what not.

@Tai-pan, yer right Carwin is the only one with a shot at taking that belt from LesnarI mean shit, this season of ultimate fighter should be known as "People who won't beat Brock Lesnar" so I guess for the sake of all YOU HATERS, if Brock wins this one you all get to bite the bullet right? You get to finally stfu and realize that shit isn't a hype so yes, I hope you get yer dream knock out but I don't see it happening. Brock is a different kind of fighter, he learns quickly the guy really is an animal but whatever right we'll just have to wait and find out.

@ Ben & Ben , I would like to see you guys ride an unbias train on this fight it'd be a nice change of pace. We all know that entire arena of people had it coming, booing an entire match? Seriously Fuck Philly. So lets have some good Unbias articles cause this fight is gonna be about as intense as it gets.

Karma OUT!
