Prepare yourselves, Potato Nation. What you are about to see in the above video from MyFox New York is not like anything you’ve ever seen. Unless you’ve seen MMA before. In that case, yeah, it’s pretty much the same thing you’ve seen before. Still, it shocks the hell out of this Fox affiliate. They found it so deplorably violent they went ahead and added bullwhip sound effects to it. That should solve it. Oh, and did they mention that one guy works for the MTA? His eye is swollen. Now you know why the G train is never running.
Funny thing is, I’ve actually attended this underground fight series before. It was at a gym in Queens (represent!), and aside from being amateurish (which is what you expect from amateur fighters), it was a pretty normal night of MMA fights.
Now, we could go back and forth about whether this kind of unlicensed, unsanctioned event is keeping MMA illegal in New York, or whether keeping it unlicensed and unsanctioned is only making inevitable events like these needlessly dangerous, but I’d rather not have that discussion. Instead I’d rather discuss news outlets that want an excuse to show violence, while still managing to look down their collective noses at a sensationalized, edited, voiced-over version of the sport of MMA.
What’s next, Fox? Reporting about how bad porn is while showing porn?

commentsAnd yea of course the underground fight clubs feel scummy. Especially when this underground league has very few rules. This is where I agree with Narcisist, because I thought it was horrible when they started to tell the reporter how few regulations they put in their league. These seem like the guys that are decked out in Affliction, getting too drunk, and trying to fight everyone at the bar so they can be just like their favorite fighters. Instead they found someone with a ring and a basement they could use.
Someone here E-mail ME!!!!!! Narcisist URdirt.com
Did they think they were going to come in and tell all of NYC how great it is? WTF!
People here still call it ultimate Fighting for Christs sakes, you want MMA to become legal this is the best way to keep it illegal. The UFC is trying to keep its name away from $hit like this because of that. Didnt anyone think about what would happen to the guy from the MTA he is F#$%ed and his pension is now done if any of his supervisors see this.
I love MMA and its upsetting that in the greatest City in the world its not legal but this wont help us. keep it quiet do shit on the low.

For one, it is a strong incentive to regulate it - as long as you can get that idea at the table that is.
Furthermore, from an economic point of view, creating demand creates more demand. If these fight weren't going on, the sport would not be growing the same way in NY, and with growth comes opportunities. If a legitimate boxing promoter, for instance, sees money in an MMA event, pressure for regulation could start coming from different directions.
That being said, there's always a dirty feel to unregulated MMA. Yeah, it really is dangerous, and the cost of a serious accident could be enormous, from a PR point of view.
The fact that one's a dentist, one's a MTA employee, one's a butcher, a baker, a candlestick maker.... that only shows how normal it is. Normal dudes who like gay foreplay, err, I mean fighting.
It's competition, for shit's sake. It's not like any of these adults are being forced to do this.
lol that was sad...
Poor journalism - but then again, it's Fox, and they're not in the journalism business, they're in the business business.
