Oh, By the Way, Nick Diaz Is Fighting BJ Penn at UFC 137

First shit was a fantasy, then shit got real, then shit got crazy, and then shit got interesting…

In a positively shocking turn of events that no one could have seen coming, Dana White today announced via Twitter that Nick Diaz had been re-booked for a bout at UFC 137 — against BJ Penn.

With a simple swap of opponents, White deftly solved the headaches he had with Diaz and the two co-main events at UFC 137 without calling in a fighter on short notice, and simultaneously scored a huge amount of free publicity for the fight (Ed. note: Oh, the ironing.)

On top of that, White also managed to deal a pretty stiff blow to Diaz, without looking like a bad guy in the process.  Diaz now finds himself without a Strikeforce title or a fight for the UFC title, with fans jeering his own catchphrase back at him, facing a very tough veteran with a broad skill set that could very well beat him at his own game.

Ok, Nation: it’s going down.  Who ya got?

@ entropee win by gogoplata at pride33 over gomi was in 07 guy...
was it a good win.. yeah later over turned , but still almost 5 years ago dude. theres no relevance there. that's like saying "dude look at how tito beat the dog shit out of shamrock twice in a row....he's totally gonna whuup up on jon jones"
we both know it just isnt going to happen.

look... at the very least, planned or not this turn of events has injected some life into the WW division. For the last couple of years GSP has either fought guys clearly out of his league because the best competition has involved some sort of combination of Fitch and Kos. We now have three well rounded exciting contenders who will put on great fights and pose some serious questions about who is the right fight for the champ in a previously thought of "cleaned out" division.

I enjoy watching Diaz fight....but I dont enjoy his antics. If he doesnt want to 'show up for press conferences' and do what he's SUPPOSED to do.... FUCK EM'. He makes more headlines with BS than his actual fights. I hope BJ breaks this bull-shit artist in half. Good for you Dana. Teach this dog how to dance! Go BJ!!!!! WHo is GSP fighting now??? Has it been announced?
entropee- September 9, 2011 at 8:04 pm
Anyone that says Diaz has just been beating cans for the last 4 years needs to watch Diaz vs Gomi. This was at the height of Gomi's career in Japan when he was considered one of the best at the time. Gomi had (and arguably still has) great power in his hands. Nick took everything Gomi could throw at him and still won that fight. I know Gomi lacks a lot of the skills that Penn has, but the one weakness Penn has shown is his lack of cardio, which is something Nick has tons of. If Penn doesn't end it early I see a good chance for diaz to take him.
aaron530- September 9, 2011 at 7:05 pm
war diaz. i dont want to say war gsp. but gsp is gonna win.
HandsofGold- September 9, 2011 at 4:16 pm
@ KarmaAteMyCat Greg wont be in either corner he already spoke on this issue. Condit is hungry but Condit also isn't on GSP's level by any means of the imagination. GSP has been standing and boxing with his last two opponents its now time he will switch up his game and i bet he shoots on Condit within the first minute in a half, Condit is always comfortable on his back which is going to be a huge mistake on his part, i mean look what happened to Serra. Gsp TKO Round 4
Wiskey Tango- September 9, 2011 at 3:45 pm
hmmmm kidna suspect.... Condit train's for the best of all time, so it's no big deal for him to go at GSP... Now Diaz gets Penn, if he wins, he gets GSP.... Bigger story, more ticket sales, More Money... Dana, your a smart, smart man and BTW, WAR DIAZ!
RwilsonR- September 9, 2011 at 3:33 pm
I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I hope BJ Penn wins. And really, he should win this fight easily wherever it goes. Hopefully BJ has enough gas in his tank to win the first two rounds easily, then he can do his typical third round laziness and take this 29-28.

Not sure what you find hilarious - though I'm glad I could brighten your day - was it the idea that GSP would flatten Diaz?
I have respect for Diaz' skills for sure, I just think the fact that UFC management had to pluck Diaz from SF just to get an opponent for him is telling of the fact that GSP is on another level by far than everyone else in his class, and in SF Diaz could't have faced an opponent near Georges' level.
KarmaAteMyCat- September 9, 2011 at 1:56 pm
Thanks man I appreciate that a shit ton. No i agree on a lot of points you made. Let me ask you this though if Diaz beats Penn does that make him a Contender? Is he a competent opponent for GSP then? Honestly I'll admit that I think Condit may hurt GSP he's hungry, angry and he wants that belt.. I also wonder whos corner Gregs going to be in. Again Thanks for the compliment and I respect you guys to thats why I debate with you guys. You have to admit this is the weirdest turn of events EVVVVER at the moment but I'll roll with it I just love watching dude fight a lot.
towelie- September 9, 2011 at 12:37 pm
Kinda wanted to see Condit/Penn, but maybe Condit beats GSP and sends GSP to MW, then Penn fights Condit after demolishing Nick.
HandsofGold- September 9, 2011 at 11:21 am
I love Diaz style and love that he goes in there to finish fights don't get me wrong. Couple reasons why I cannot see him winning. #1 Penn has never even been knocked down in a fight and Bj comes straight forward he wont wait for Nick to come across the ring and talk shit. #2 The only way Nick could possibley win is if he makes it to the final round and wins by submission in which case wont happen no matter how tired BJ is. I believe BJ knocks Diaz down in the second finishing by TKO. But i dont care to see BJ fight GSP again. Wouldn't mind seeing BJ vs Kosh.
towelie- September 9, 2011 at 11:00 am
Penn is the more explosive of the two potheads. I'm putting money on him to KO this sucka.
magicman831- September 9, 2011 at 10:51 am
My money is on Penn. Yea he has a reach disadvantage but superior boxing skills and he's better on the ground with his flexibility
k-onda- September 9, 2011 at 9:43 am
I gotta go with Diaz in this one - stamina and standup go to Nick, and I see it as a draw on the ground.
PS, Dana's a bitch. How is that all international fighters get interpreters/translators but Diaz doesn't? Look, it's not complicated, just ask Cesar the questions and leav the fighting to the human-rock-em-sock-em robot with the fire hydrant for a head. You're welcome.
Me likey- September 9, 2011 at 9:07 am
noons=sf gatekeeper.....AT 155. not even a gatekeeper at 170.
he always comes to fight when it is a fight he thinks he will win. he ducked miller and gsp. 2 real threats.
Bandito- September 9, 2011 at 9:07 am
This chit cracks me up... some of you fools think that a former UFC washout has got a chance against one of the best the UFC has had. The best Diaz... who when he was in the UFC was mid level at best... has done since he left the UFC is beat a few jokers who were happy to be off the regional circuit and on TV... and you Nancy-boys think he's world class?!! Gimme a break, you limp-wristed sissies must be smoking the same hooch that Diaz is.
shatterproof- September 9, 2011 at 9:07 am
can't wait for GSP and Diaz to ruin the days of so many here. haha
intercept440- September 9, 2011 at 8:09 am
@karma . look man is diaz a solid fighter in the ring, yea he is pretty good, is he even close to a contender?? FUUUUUUUCCCKKKK NO.
come on bro look at who he has fought in the last 4 years and tell me any of his opponenets he faced in SF we even close to the skill level of penn or gsp.
inoue, corbrey in 08 both those guys = cans
frank shamrock and scottsmith in 09 only shamrock really has a decnet record here, aside from the amazing comeback wins from smith who upon rematched was crushed.
thomas denny in 08 = can
Sakurai in 09 , who's last win was shinya aoki surprisingly with a KO in round one , but since lost his last 4 .
evangelista santos in 2010 = can
zaromiskis = can
noons = SF gatekeeper
his greatest acomplishment in the last four years is paul daley, who is a good striker, but a single dimentional fighter.
now take a look at bj penn and tell me who he has fought and ran through.
granted bj is now older, and has cardio issues, but penn still takes this all day long.
granted diaz is a gamer and in MMA anything can happen, but take a look at this on paper and it's a fucking no brainer all day long
RoJoegan- September 9, 2011 at 7:59 am
Intercept440 and Me likey are correct. I got all the respect in the world for you, man, but thinking the Dana foresaw and planned this, with the help of Diaz, is just a fun fantasy. Diaz knows he got his ass kicked by Shields in practice, then saw Shields do nothing with GSP, then crapped the bed with fear and hid like a scared homie. Dana is good at making shit happen on the fly. As Brock says, “making chicken salad.” These fights are much more interesting.

That’s exactly what you can do if you’re DW. Thinking it’s dickish to give Diaz another big fight against one of the most famous fighters in MMA makes you special. DW does, however, want to prove a point by having Penn expose Diaz’s lesser status as a UFC fighter.
blaphtome- September 9, 2011 at 7:26 am
BUT, HandsofGold has a pretty solid theory too. Either way STOKED!!! Fireworks, GUARANTEED.
blaphtome- September 9, 2011 at 7:23 am
Diaz by compustrike landslide/cardio.
