Once Again, Pat Barry Is Looking to Kill or Be Killed

With two consecutive stoppage losses against Cheick Kongo and Stefan Struve, and a 3-4 record in the UFC overall, Pat Barry truly needs to get his shit together tomorrow night in Nashville. He and Christian Morecraft will be slugging it out in the opening bout of UFC on FX 1‘s main card, and a third loss could spell the end of Barry’s UFC contract.

Or maybe not. UFC president Dana White has long been a fan of Barry’s “Hype or Die” style, and records don’t matter to Barry anyway. As he told MMAJunkie:

Coming off two losses is no different than coming off two wins, in my opinion…The sport has evolved nowadays to where it’s not just about fighting any more. We’re entertainers. We’re athletes first, but we’re entertainers along with being athletes. So we’ve got to be able to fight, and we’ve got to be able to perform. I can throw a jab and run from anybody. But who wants to see that?…I come into put on a show. It’s ‘HD.’ Either I’m killing people, or I’m getting killed. I’m going to lose better than anybody if I do.”

We’ll give it to Pat; he definitely loses better than anybody.

^ I agree with your analysis of Barry as well but as others suggested a move to 205, if he can do it, would be a good one.

Barry has no place in 205. He's a great HW with little ground game. As @Fletch stated, he pretty much could own the majority of the hw division with some takedown and submission defense.

Barry needs to cut down to 205 and then he'll be a force to be reckoned with.

If the UFC is going to keep on with the ridiculous amount of shows, then they are going to need guys like Barry, losing record or not.
Nailed it.
Zuffa can no longer risk letting him get disillusioned with BAMMA, or going to Bellator. They got too many shows to keep up with now.
And they need lots of new blood.

I agree with keeping guys like Barry around. Guys like Pat Barry and Matt Brown who lose consistently but come to fight and put on a show have a place in the UFC. They are their as a measuring stick and showman. Although, if Pat Barry could stuff something green in his mouth other than guacamole, maybe a salad or some sort of fruit, he could lose a good 20 plus pounds and rejuvinate his career at Light Heavyweight.

True. If you think about his losses though, he was winning almost all of them for most of the fight. He could've and should've finished CroCop but was too in love to do so. He had Congo out on his feet like 3 times. He was kicking Struve's ass before getting caught in the submission.

Overall I agree. If he learned some ground game the guy could almost beat the majority of all the HW's.

He is always fun to watch though and UFC needs guys like him.

I will say though, as much as I love the guy, he isnt progressing as a fighter. It might be nice to see him get at least some semblance of a ground game and to be a little less reckless. His destruction of Hardunk through hands alone was pretty goddamn awesome.

some of my friends actually know christian morecraft. i talked to him at a party around when he was first getting signed with the ufc. don't remember what we discussed, as i was drunk as shit, but he's the only ufc fighter i've met in real life, so... yeah.

I thought Barry was gonna finish Kongo this time around.
Morecraft may rush this thing to the ground like when he fought Struve, for 2 rds he had Struve in big trouble, Barry won't be able to handle to GnP of Morecraft. We'll see if in between BJ's Brock taught Barry some wrestling.
