Overeem Says Werdum’s Punches ‘Annoyed’ him, But Didn’t Hurt

(History has proven that it’s tough to look good when your opponent wants a jiu-jitsu match, no matter how good you are.)

Alistair Overeem was on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani today and the Strikeforce heavyweight champion addressed the glut of MMA fans and analysts who disagree with him winning his heavyweight grand prix quarterfinal bout with Fabrico Werdum Saturday night. According to “The Demolition Man,” just because Werdum connected with more shots in the bout, doesn’t mean he won the fight, like many claim.

“I won the fight but I was not satisfied. I didn’t get a KO. I worked hard and when I look at the fight, I did dominate him. I stuck to the game plan but you have to give credit to Fabricio; he was prepared. He was not going to get suckered into my game, which is the stand-up and he got me out of my game. His takedowns were not successful, but I think he trained hard for this fight. He really wanted to win,” he explained. “I felt his power and he was there to win. I’m not impressed with his striking. He does not hit hard. He was using his strikes to set up his takedowns, but there was no damage. I was annoyed. When you look at a fight, who’s more dominant? You can see who’s more dominant.”

He points out that he controlled the cage and the bout and the only time Werdum “won” any of the exchanges, it was a smattering of light punches that promply stopped when he counter-punched and “Vai Cavalo” pulled guard, which basically slowed the pace of the fight any time he attempted to set up a combination.

“That is stalling the fight — or sort of withdrawing from the fight. That basically slowed down the fight and kept anything from happening. Of course I expected him to pull guard, but I didn’t expect him to do it like thirty times.”

In reality, it’s estimated that the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt butt-flopped at least 21 times in an attempte to pull Overeem into his guards, but “The Reem” wasn’t having any of it.

Yeah it was pretty weak, but it made strategic sense. He was able to get in some good punches and knees without taking any in return. Due to the fact that he kept going down on his own, I don't see how you can score points for overeem for takedowns or knockdowns.. although I think he did kick his legs out once or twice. I could see an argument for either fighter.. apparently Werdum won the compustrike based on shots landed, but when you factor in aggression and cage control and stuff sure overeem wins there.. bottom line is it was such a shitty main event no one really cares.
monkyspunk- June 21, 2011 at 11:00 am
Werdum slid around the floor on his back for the majority of the call that winning? His performance was disgraceful.
Hummus- June 21, 2011 at 10:45 am
@ArmFarmer: Overeem almost always gets outlanded. His kickboxing game is based off of playing defense and absorbing the few shots that get through. His countershots are so much stronger than his opponents shots that he almost always gets the win. I didn't watch the fight (and don't think I'm going to any time in the near future), but based on descriptions I read, the fight standing probably looked a lot like that: Werdum comes in with punches, lands several while Overeem covers up, then Overeem lands a power counter. You can score that either way, honestly.
ArmFarmer- June 21, 2011 at 8:28 am
Honestly I only watched two rounds of it the next day and it was so boring I turned it off.. but I saw Werdum land more than Overeem in that span so.. fuck you guys.
ArmFarmer- June 21, 2011 at 8:26 am
I guess Redping didn't notice all the punches and knees Werdum landed. He went to his back repeatedly, but so what. It's not like Overeem caused that to happen by scoring a takedown so why should that count for anything. I thought overall, Werdum landed more shots and did more damage, and the gaurd pulling/butt flopping imo didn't count as anything for anyone, so in essence redping you are a fucking dumbass.
D-man420- June 21, 2011 at 8:22 am
@ArmFarmer im sorry but i just have to laugh at you saying i might even thing werdum won. How in hell can i guy win a fight when hes running away and dropping to the floor the whole fight. Man i really hope you joking. and if the odds right im betting on the reem vs silva

I kinda like Mir. He can't hang with Cain, Dos Santos or Lesnar, but he has a place. And he always seems to be ready, in shape, and if he takes a beaten, he takes it like a man. Werdum,... that was crap. I could not figure out if Overeem was good or not in that fight. But in two bouts he'll have Barnett. Then we will see if he can hang or will he get smashed like Gilbert.

horrible fight. overeem gassed in a 3 round fight that was anything but high tempo. werdum may have won some of the exchanges but as soon as overeem would throw a punch he would flop. some of those flops could be considered a knockdown or a takedown. this has made the previously "deep" heavyweight talent pool seem far less impressive. cain, dos santos and mir just to name a few would run through strikeforce.

Agreed with Redping and Tuamae.
So much ignorance amongst MMA fans. Being a butt-scooping pussy, while calf-rushing your opponent does not warrant a win.
That said, I'm surprised Reem gassed...
Cain and Santos have way better tanks than that and better wrestling. I want to see what happens.
Tuamae- June 21, 2011 at 12:57 am
Jeez, I have no clue what people are talking about with this fight. Werdum didn't have the balls to stand with Overeem and was just throwing himself on the ground, then everyone is giving Alistair shit for not finishing the fight. His opponent has to be standing for him to knock him out and if Werdum wants the fight on the ground then take him down (which he couldn't do for shit). THE REEM FTMFW.
Redping- June 20, 2011 at 8:48 pm
Werdum could've tricked morons into giving him that fight - just from reading hte comments, people are already ready to give it to him because they have no idea what a fight is apparently. How anybody could give any second of that fight to werdum is beyond me, and I do BJJ. butt flopping and failing to pull guard repeatedly is just disgraceful. This is one of those fights that shows statistical analysis for how shitty it is- only somebody who purely looked at numbers, and has never taken a punch in his life, could give any of that fight to werdum. He even managed to get Overeem into the ground-game for a huge portion of the match, and did NOTHING. didn't even ATTEMPT anything, he swayed towards and arm bar and then ignored it. Does he think just holding overeem in his guard is impressive enough to win points?

Like watching Maia vs Anderson, part two

Except Werdum's face wasn't shit fucked.
Rear Naked Poke- June 20, 2011 at 7:57 pm
i tought Werdum gave the fight away, he could have stolen some rounds with last minute combinations and it would have a been a whole different story.
Props to Overeem, i tought the fight was interesting.
CaptnJonesy- June 20, 2011 at 7:40 pm
Man Werdum got what he wanted with like three minutes left, with an add bonus of Alistair being winded, and what did he do? Nothing! He hugged him! He didn't attack or change angles to get his submission game on. He got exactly what he wanted and just laid there...he may of just had a crush on him or something
intercept440- June 20, 2011 at 7:15 pm
fuck werdum if he keeps doing stupid shit like that like flopping on his ass ,and not actaully fighting. dana most likely will fire his ass. this fight was shit, when it could have been a good one, fuck undereem as well

It was funny to see a big bad MMA fighter lie on his back with his legs open telling another big bad MMA fighter to come lay between his legs. I've never seen that. How bout you take him down like you're supposed to. Set it up with a technique and take him down or fight him. Don't ask him to take himself down. Idiot. (Look at the pic. Hilarious to see someone lay on there back and tell the other guy to come on and stop being a wuss)
SonOfSerbia- June 20, 2011 at 6:23 pm
Overeem is gonna have big problems with Silva if he cant finish Werdum. Reem will drop Antonio Silva in the first round when they fight, the only question will be if he cant mount him and finish him, You aren't gonna one-punch KO silva his chin is huge and his guard is dangerous.
ArmFarmer- June 20, 2011 at 6:00 pm
Overeem did not dominate that fight.. In fact I kinda thought Werdum won. Considering his opponent was intimidated by a ground fight i thought it was an effective strategy to land blows without taking damage.
MKO- June 20, 2011 at 5:41 pm
Just rewatched Silva-Leites; even with the huge amount of flops, Werdum put up so much better of a fight. Also, after round three, it didn't appear Anderson cared so much about finishing the fight as fucking up Leites' knee.
Lesnarischamp- June 20, 2011 at 5:27 pm
Overeem needs a willing partner to look good. He has a very defensive kickboxing standup, he guards well against power shots but can let a lot of straight shots in. Against a fighter that is more likely to stand and trade with him, and give him an opportunity to hit more than 1 shot in succession before falling to the ground, he would undoubtedly look better.
MKO- June 20, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Overeem still looked like shit.
For all the shit Silva got for the Leites fight, he never didn't look good, just frustrated and pissed. Granted Werdum does have significantly better stand-up than Leites (not as awkward looking as Maia had been, but way less effective), you still have to give props for Silva's clowning on him. I didn't see Overeem throwing jabs to the knee, keeping his hand downs, side kicks to the knee, or the badass grapevine kicks that actually took Leites down.
Get Off Me- June 20, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Siver just made it look so much better when he fought G Sots.
I give Overeem the benefit of the doubt, he generally fights for the KO.
Dizzylittlelord- June 20, 2011 at 4:22 pm
overeem didnt look good at all, there will be a lot of people betting on bigfoot next fight, lets see what happens
