Anyway, there are some good posts on this thread. The bottom line, however, is that while Kos may be a bad actor and a douche, Daley threw a suckerpunch. He deserved to be cut.

If White goes back on his word and eventually allows Daley to fight again, I’ll never watch another UFC event of any kind.

That’s exactly what was going through my mind. Daley threw the illegal knee. So he didn’t connect (the replay showed the attempt, but not the landing). I first thought his finger caught Koscheck’s right eye, but I really couldn’t tell for sure, so I said nothing.

Also, it appeared he really tried to land that knee, not try to avoid hitting Koscheck. You know how some times the fighter starts to throw, then decides otherwise? Well I didn’t see any otherwise from Daley. BTW: cool name

OK, so Paul Daley was frustrated. Any man would be frustrated, knowing his opponent is besting him and there was nothing Daley was able to do about it. Same with anyone else; frustration sets in and they’ve got to get something in (Daley used his sucker punch as his way to “get something in”). Unfortunately, this was not the way. You simply suck it up and hope for a better day. The loss dropped him down a few rungs. The sucker punch may have cost him a lucrative career.

I say if Dana White can let Jesse Taylor back in and allow Junie Browning to continue fighting in the UFC, why not allow Paul Daley back? He will apologize on Network TV if need be. This man is a fighter who wins fights. Losing to someone who is taunting along the way got to him. If he can prove to White and the fans that this type of behavior will never happen again and if Josh Koscheck approves of Daley’s re-entry, then I say: “Why not?” Koscheck should have a say in this since he was the victim here.

What I do not approve is Daley using reasons and excuses in his apology statement. There is no need to explain why he did what he did, because the fact that he did sucker punch an opponent is the focus and not why he claimed he did it. According to what he stated, he is not exactly apoligizing for that extreme behavior, but for reacting to what Koscheck did. Koscheck beat Daley–bottom line. Daley appeared to be using his digits to penetrate Koscheck’s eye, during the end of the fight. Where is this competitive? Koscheck seemed obviously perturbed by Daley’s actions, and he said what was needed to be said. Daley still lost and knew he lost.

What might have cemented White’s decision is when Daley explained to White that he (Daley) did not hear the bell, when the sucker punch was thrown. You come at me with a bullsh*t line like that and I’d probably cut you as well. After Daley had time to think about the event, he was able to be more truthful. Afterall, he did realize it was too late for alibies. He was already cut from the ranks of the UFC.

I lost all respect for Daley. These guys who make it to the big time and act like an ass need to be replaced by the multitude of talented fighters waiting in line. It’s just like the football players making millions and getting arrested, jailed, drug convicted, etc… they forget what it took to get to where they are, and no longer appreciate their blessing. They all talk trash… it’s expected… and none of them should turn verbal into physical. Making it to the UFC should be viewed as an honor, not a right. Daley is a great fighter, but a horrible sportsman. Get rid of him, or you’re sending the message that it’s ok to act like an idiot and still make tons of $$$.

I have to admit that Kos won me over. I’m go as far as saying I’m a fan now. He came in with a smart game plan. He didn’t go in stupid and try to exchange with a better boxer. He used his superior wrestling and dominated the fight. Daley couldn’t do a thing about it. If Montreal didn’t like this, then they are hippocritical because their favorite son GSP just did the exact same thing to Hardy and they ate that shit up. as for the knee, i don’t know if there’s a specific rule to address it, but there ought to be; pretending to be hurt, whether to get a penalty point deducted from an opponent or just get a break, is in no way sportsmanly or professional. ignoring it and/or pretending it’s fine is just as harmful to the sport as the suckerpunch.

What Hendo did to Bisping was nothing. The ref hadn’t “stopped” the fight, the bell handn’t rang, and he didn’t even hit him with his fist. There are hundreds of more bladant fouls than that in the last few years. But the biggest difference is that Daley got up, walked around the ref, gets Koscheck’s attention, then throws the punch. That wasn’t a “heat of the moment” occurrence like all these other infractions. Just like shooting someone who points a gun on you is “self defense” where chasing someone down AFTER they pointed a gun at you and shooting them in the back is murder.

I think the hype around Daley would have done a nose dive, too, and this just derailed the inevitable. Ultimately, the UFC has to be careful who they match guys like Daley with to avoid these kinds of fights. I hate when they obviously match guys up through the year to make fights that pander to the fans expectations. Koscheck’s style and Daley’s are total opposite and Daley can’t do a thing about it. Well, was there another MMA organisation in the US, or even the world, which was ‘more established’ than the UFC was before Zuffa bought it from SEG? Of course, it’s come on a lot in the 10 years or so, but I’d say that was down to the Lefittas mainly because of their previous entrepreneurial skills. I know Dana is worth some credit, of course, but I think he rides a lot of luck in all this too. It just came at the right time for them. They’ve worked it to become much more of a sport rather than being a freak show which is great, but also a necessity so they could get the licenses to stage events all over the world and get TV airtime.

Well established?!?! A company that can be bought for 2 million (and isn’t even been shown on cable pay per view) is not well established! SEG were bankrupt from trying to run it. I do despise the man! I hate his ego massaging self promotion, the weird dejewification he seems to have undertaken and his UFC propaganda, but the UFC is a superbly run organisation, it would be an injustice to deny that White has helped drag MMA to the mainstream.

Wrestlers in MMA do not get much better than Josh Koscheck, he’s a four-time NCAA Division I All-American (Lesnar for comparison is a two-time NCAA Division I All-American), Koscheck should have had an easier time time taking Daley down if anything! Daley has stated recently that he is not a ground fighter, that his “bread and butter” is stand up so thats what he concentrates on, but after being humiliated by someone he hates, I’d imagine he might change his tune a little.

White is always prepared to make compromises, he let Kimbo in despite all the shit he said, he took back BJ despite saying he’d never fight for the UFC again. White’ll always go for the money, which is good for MMA fans as generally this means seeing some nice fights.

Where was this apology when Dana was standing in front of him asking him why? Fuck everybody else, that was the guy Daley needed to convince. Judging from what Dana said, Daley was basically like “fuck you, I don’t care” when asked why and if he wanted to be in the UFC. Is he that good a promoter though? Sure he co-runs the biggest MMA organisation in the world, but the UFC was already well established. They had big money backing when others didn’t. I think Daley obviously should have been punished. Fined, suspended, maybe both. But a lifetime ban is a little harsh. It kind of sucks that he isn’t given a chance to change. It’s a serious offense, but this is just Dana White being Dana White. It’s not about mma to him. It’s about the UFC. It’s always been that way. Mayhem Miller could have been seriously injured when Team Cesar Gracie jumped his ass, but nothing happened to Diaz, and they are actively trying to pursue Shields. I’m sure the door is even open to Melendez and Nick Diaz in the future. It just doesn’t make much sense to me, and when it comes down to it, I think it is a bit hasty and harsh.

What Daley did was stupid but no harm came of it, so I think whatever the athletic commission would have decided would have been sufficient. But since it takes them a while to make any decisions, Dana probably felt like he needed to send a message especially since he is trying to get sanctioning in certain areas of Canada.

Koscheck was clearly hurt more from the “phantom knee” than the “sucker punch”.
Daley pissed Dana off because GSP went out to Parliament Hill(Canada) earlier in the week to invite Ontario’s key decision makers to the UFC 113 and sure enough they saw what Daley did from the front row.
If Daley would have hurt Koscheck with the shot, that’s another story, I chalk this up as simple disrespecting the sport(Brock Lesnar v Mir 2 like, etc..) A simple cut from the UFC and apology from Daley should leave the two parties square….I guess the whole ban for life is Dana’s way of continuing to make the WW div the “most exciting” div to watch in the UFC with guys like koscheck, fitch and swick instead….yeah i’d prefer them over Daley anyday

As stated previously, Kos proved he’s the better fighter and also shows he’s much better at the trash talk and bullshit, as he didn’t let the hype and pre fight bullshit distract him from his game plan.
Daley let it all get under his skin, lost self control and as a consequence is looking for a new organisation to fight in. Just goes to show, in UFC as in all elite sports, mental strength is just as important as any other attribute.

what bothers me most about this isn’t that daley’s gone for good from the ufc; it’s that everyone, dw included, knows that kos played up the phantom knee and talked shit through the fight, and he practically got a pat on the back for it in the post-fight presser – for anyone who missed it, dana made a joke about koscheck being so good at being a dick that he didn’t need practice; big laughs were had by all. so the guy who wins the fight shows himself to be an unsportsmanly prick on multiple occasions through the fight and gets laughs from the pres; the guy who lost doesn’t play his douche-card until after the final bell, and he’s gone for good. i think if they wanna say that being a classless cock gets you booted, they need to apply it a little more evenly.
