Paul Daley Releases Statement in Wake of UFC 113 Controversy and UFC Release

Recently unemployed fighter Paul "Semtex" Daley released the following statement Sunday evening through the UK-based Telegraph newspaper, apologizing for his post-fight attack of opponent Josh Koscheck at Saturday night’s UFC 113 event in Montreal, Quebec:

"I’ve had a long flight home to consider my actions and regret the mistake I made on Saturday. I would like to apologise to the UFC and the Athletic Commission for what I’ve done as well as all the fans and sponsors that support me.

I would also like to offer my sincerest apologies to Josh Koscheck who did not deserve the cheap shot I threw. He did what he needed to do in order to win the fight and get the job done, and I foolishly reacted to the situation.

There is no excuse for my actions and I know what I did was very unprofessional. I was immensely frustrated by a collection of things that took place throughout the fight as well as leading up to it, but I’m certainly not trying to condone or excuse my actions.

Josh implemented his game plan perfectly taking me down and staying on top of me for the majority of the fight. I was also frustrated about him claiming (and acting like) I knee’d him in the head on the ground when it was clear for all to see in the video replay that I didn’t connect at all with the knee I threw.

Then finally, the verbal abuse Josh hit me with in the final 30 seconds of the fight simply pushed me over the edge and my frustrations came out as I knew I’d lost the fight, was unhappy with my own performance and had then been ridiculed by my opponent to top things off.

This is certainly no excuse for my actions; I fully deserve to be punished for what I did and hope that everyone I have disappointed can forgive my rash decision. I feel very disappointed in myself for losing my cool and hope that I am able to address my temperament and bounce back from this low point in my career.

I feel ashamed and embarrassed by what I did and hope that together my team and I can get through this issue. It will be a long road back from where I am now to earning the trust and respect of the UFC and the MMA fans that have supported me for so long, I know I’ve let you all down but I’m determined to make it up to you all."

I'd just like to add my 2 cents in here.....why the hell does it matter what a fighter's personality is at all in this sport? Since when was I buying WWE PPV's? "oh, his personality sucks!" "He's an awesome dude!" "He's a fraggle headed, penis tattoo'ed asshole who doesnt deserve to fight!" Man, shut up! We don't pay to hear them talk, we pay to see them fight and that's what they do. Get over the fact that you once got picked on by the jocks in high school. And 99% of the people on here complaining about these guys dont' know them personally, so again...why the fuck does it matter? And I bet that if any of you actually met Koscheck or Lesnar or Mir or anyone else on the hate-wagon, you'd get all sweaty and ask for an autograph "for your little brother" {cuz you know, you're too proud to ask for yourself}, NOT punch them in the face like claimed on internet websites.....

Ok....I said it. Much love!

hey... @Goat you see Tito vs. Dana? remember the beef? Tito will never fight in the UFC again? remember the SANCTIONED fight Dana and Tito were supposed to have, and Tito said via sms he wouldn't go through with it, day of the weigh in's, and let Dana "off the hook" by not showing up to kick his ass?

where's the PR there? Tito gets re-hired. Dana says they squashed their beef, but it was used "he's done. he's never fighting in the UFC again".

see, the sad thing is, you get a dude in baseball charge the mound, throw fists, and he gets a fine. that's a professional sport, no? you get guys cross-checking from behind in hockey. against the rules, and a "sucker" shot. lol it even happens after the game, or between play. game misconduct, and a suspension.

if this is a professional "sport" then i think it should be as such. people slip, martial artists or not. remember, baseball players and hockey players etc.. aren't trained to beat the crap out of people much like boxers, MMA, kickboxers, etc... so it's 1/3 instinct, and the other 2/3 lack of judgement/frustration. in other sports, it's mainly 100% lack of judgement/frustration
just my opinion though...

Aww you donthave to apologize to me Paul, I'm glad you did what you did and matched your actions to that big fucking mouth of yours. Have a nice vacation.

This kid is perfect for Strikeforce. Get him training with the Diaz brothers, STAT!

@Chin In Eye

Are you saying Dana White is Jewish? If so, do you have a source to back up this claim?

Anyway, there are some good posts on this thread. The bottom line, however, is that while Kos may be a bad actor and a douche, Daley threw a suckerpunch. He deserved to be cut.

If White goes back on his word and eventually allows Daley to fight again, I'll never watch another UFC event of any kind.
fingerssfv- May 10, 2010 at 1:01 pm
That's exactly what was going through my mind. Daley threw the illegal knee. So he didn't connect (the replay showed the attempt, but not the landing). I first thought his finger caught Koscheck's right eye, but I really couldn't tell for sure, so I said nothing.

Also, it appeared he really tried to land that knee, not try to avoid hitting Koscheck. You know how some times the fighter starts to throw, then decides otherwise? Well I didn't see any otherwise from Daley. BTW: cool name
fingerssfv- May 10, 2010 at 12:53 pm
OK, so Paul Daley was frustrated. Any man would be frustrated, knowing his opponent is besting him and there was nothing Daley was able to do about it. Same with anyone else; frustration sets in and they've got to get something in (Daley used his sucker punch as his way to "get something in"). Unfortunately, this was not the way. You simply suck it up and hope for a better day. The loss dropped him down a few rungs. The sucker punch may have cost him a lucrative career.

I say if Dana White can let Jesse Taylor back in and allow Junie Browning to continue fighting in the UFC, why not allow Paul Daley back? He will apologize on Network TV if need be. This man is a fighter who wins fights. Losing to someone who is taunting along the way got to him. If he can prove to White and the fans that this type of behavior will never happen again and if Josh Koscheck approves of Daley's re-entry, then I say: "Why not?" Koscheck should have a say in this since he was the victim here.

What I do not approve is Daley using reasons and excuses in his apology statement. There is no need to explain why he did what he did, because the fact that he did sucker punch an opponent is the focus and not why he claimed he did it. According to what he stated, he is not exactly apoligizing for that extreme behavior, but for reacting to what Koscheck did. Koscheck beat Daley--bottom line. Daley appeared to be using his digits to penetrate Koscheck's eye, during the end of the fight. Where is this competitive? Koscheck seemed obviously perturbed by Daley's actions, and he said what was needed to be said. Daley still lost and knew he lost.

What might have cemented White's decision is when Daley explained to White that he (Daley) did not hear the bell, when the sucker punch was thrown. You come at me with a bullsh*t line like that and I'd probably cut you as well. After Daley had time to think about the event, he was able to be more truthful. Afterall, he did realize it was too late for alibies. He was already cut from the ranks of the UFC.
Kempo Cyco- May 10, 2010 at 11:49 am
I lost all respect for Daley. These guys who make it to the big time and act like an ass need to be replaced by the multitude of talented fighters waiting in line. It's just like the football players making millions and getting arrested, jailed, drug convicted, etc... they forget what it took to get to where they are, and no longer appreciate their blessing. They all talk trash... it's expected... and none of them should turn verbal into physical. Making it to the UFC should be viewed as an honor, not a right. Daley is a great fighter, but a horrible sportsman. Get rid of him, or you're sending the message that it's ok to act like an idiot and still make tons of $$$.
Socal Tot- May 10, 2010 at 10:12 am
I have to admit that Kos won me over. I'm go as far as saying I'm a fan now. He came in with a smart game plan. He didn't go in stupid and try to exchange with a better boxer. He used his superior wrestling and dominated the fight. Daley couldn't do a thing about it. If Montreal didn't like this, then they are hippocritical because their favorite son GSP just did the exact same thing to Hardy and they ate that shit up. Kos got his revenge for all of the disrespect Daley dished out. Daley couldn't take losing along with the smack talk and threw the sucker punch out of frustration. Then he blew his chance to appologize and Dana gave him a definite boot out of the UFC. Daley is NEVER coming back.

Yes his hair looks goofy, but no worse that Goulet, or any fighter who carves words or designs into their hair (or body hair- Kimbo). He's a cocky dude, but he trains his ass off and has really come a long way since the original TUF. He talks shit, but he's pretty funny. I thought the Penguins comment was awesome, especially since Kos is from Pennsylvania. Kos is embracing his role as the bad guy and will continue to be a top fighter for years to come. Will he beat GSP? Uh- no.
Omelette Platter- May 10, 2010 at 9:36 am
yeah, i know the lay and pray is perfectly fine by the rules, and i have no issue with that. but the shit-talk sure isn't, and you can't tell me big dan couldn't hear it. yeah, i know it's a rule that's never enforced, but you know it was a major contributing factor to the post-fight festivities and for dana to even address it to the press and brush it off shows a huge lack of professionalism. if you wanna invent and enforce rules on the spot you should probably enforce the ones on the book first.

as for the knee, i don't know if there's a specific rule to address it, but there ought to be; pretending to be hurt, whether to get a penalty point deducted from an opponent or just get a break, is in no way sportsmanly or professional. ignoring it and/or pretending it's fine is just as harmful to the sport as the suckerpunch.

i don't want to seem like i'm condoning daley's behaviour; that was a big, stupid fuckup. i find the behaviour of both of these retards unacceptable, it's just a little hard to swallow when only one douchebag gets his comeuppance.
bryndy- May 10, 2010 at 9:14 am
I wish other sports had the balls DW has by terminating those who make the sport look bad; regardless of talent or ability.
Yves Latrine- May 10, 2010 at 9:05 am
Fuck this idiot. Koscheck pretending to get hit by a phantom knee still doesn't excuse the fact that Daley CLEARLY ATTEMPTED TO THROW AN ILLEGAL KNEE. You shouldn't not get the points deducted just because you fucking missed. What a dipshit this guy is.
sevvi- May 10, 2010 at 8:57 am
@Omelette Platter

After all the pre fight shit that retard Daley pulled i would have done the same thing Kos did. He beat him from bell to bell and the only chance that Daley saw to punch him was after the final bell. good riddance don't need douchebags like that in the UFC imo. First he talks so much smack before the fight and can't even take his own medicine? What a loser.
SouthSideEssay- May 10, 2010 at 7:58 am
Eh, I think the only reason semtex got canned is because of the strikeforce "bootdown", and Dana White is a man after Kos's heart.
Your Dumb- May 10, 2010 at 7:42 am
That's kind of disappointing, i was expecting a Frank Mir type of apology.

But in all seriousness, I think he should be allowed to return to the Octagon once he serves whatever suspension is handed to him.
ytrebil- May 10, 2010 at 7:11 am
Remember though guys, Dana can be a little bitch. He’s just as ‘prideful’ as Daley and if ANYONE had shrugged his shoulders and turned away as Daley did when Dana questioned him, they’d have been sent packing too. Sure Dana is all about $$$, but he wouldn’t sacrifice his ‘pride’ for it.
jimbonics- May 10, 2010 at 7:06 am
Also worth mentioning; Hendo hasn't fought in the UFC since. Different reasons? Sure, but he ain't around.
dranokills- May 10, 2010 at 6:48 am
Hendo- during the fight, no bell, no ref stoppage=legal shot.

Daley-AFTER the bell, already over! =illegal moron who got cut.

live with it.
Nealio- May 10, 2010 at 6:42 am
What Hendo did to Bisping was nothing. The ref hadn't "stopped" the fight, the bell handn't rang, and he didn't even hit him with his fist. There are hundreds of more bladant fouls than that in the last few years. But the biggest difference is that Daley got up, walked around the ref, gets Koscheck's attention, then throws the punch. That wasn't a "heat of the moment" occurrence like all these other infractions. Just like shooting someone who points a gun on you is "self defense" where chasing someone down AFTER they pointed a gun at you and shooting them in the back is murder.
Sh3nP- May 10, 2010 at 6:37 am
We should have seen the warning signs when he started qouting Mike Tyson...
Nealio- May 10, 2010 at 6:37 am
I think its hilarious that Daley started all the shit talking, did the photoshop contest, then brought the pic to the weigh ins. Then he was one to "lose it" when Kos talked some shit into his ear..
HolyGhost- May 10, 2010 at 6:27 am
I think you're all being a bit hard on Semtex. Sure he was a dick with the sucker punch and he should be punished but cutting him from the UFC is a bit of an over reaction. Maybe take his purse for the fight.

I know he's gone to Strikeforce now but remember what Hendo did to Bisping? Hendo admitted that he did it on purpose and I'd argue that was by far more dangerous. He said, "Normally I'm not that way in fights. I know if the guy's out, I tend to stop. I knew I hit him out and I think that one was just to shut him up a little bit."

There was no repercussion in fact Dana White said what Hendo said was a joke and dismissed it.
Harry Sack- May 10, 2010 at 6:09 am
Daley shouldnt have recieved the lifetime ban, it was too harsh for what went down, period. end of story. DW is having fantasies of strongarming his cash cows like Roger Goodell - an inapporpriate move here.
"(in most nasal, spineless voice possible)...but you cannot tolerate the damage to the sport as its trying to expand globaly, im shocked by this abhorrent behavior!" - STFU, sit the F down, and stop acting like YOU didnt want to get up and sucker punch your flatscreen EVERY time Kos hopped in the ring.
Yes Daley was wrong, very wrong. But he didn't deserve to be cut - ridiculous. DW should have come up with something less about grandstanding in that opportunity - er - situation, and more about reason, solution, etc.
That being said, what is done is done - you heard it here first - Daleys next fight is a loss in Strikeforce against Tyron Woodley.
Koscheck is going to be humbled and possibly injured seriously against GSP, he disrespected GSP, and Canada, IN Canada, and although he would never admit it or handle the situation with anything less than class, GSP is seriously perturbed. Plus he's already a little ticked off at how the Canadian fighters did overall on such a grand stage.
The ONLY thing Koscheck should be saying right now is "UH-OH"

@Horny guy that seeks for escort in Montreal

Try in english next time...almost everyone understand and talk both languages in Montreal....yes we're that smart.
Clyde- May 10, 2010 at 5:15 am
Dana was right to fire him. If the lifetime ban sticks or not, time will tell. He's not the first professional athlete to punch someone when he shouldn't have. He won't be the last. But he really did fuck up there.

No one wants to loose, and no one wants to loose to a complete dick like Kos. But sady, for all his dicketry, Kos is one of the best welterweights in the world and Daley didn't have the skillset to beat him. Sometimes you've got to swallow your pride and accept the fact that you lost.

I too agree that Daley Vs. Diaz has a lot of potential though.
